● What is an MPPC ?

The MPPC (Multi-Pixel Photon Counter)

is one of the devices called Si-PM

(Silicon Photomultiplier). It is a photon-

counting device using multiple APD

pixels operating in Geiger mode.

● Features Small size

Low bias operation

High gain: 105 to 106

High Photon detection efficiency

Excellent photon-counting capability

Excellent timing resolution

Insensitive to magnetic fields

• For VUV light detection, precise control of MPPC’s protection layer and absorption region is required.

• Generated photo-electrons excited by VUV light are transported to avalanche region by electric field. To obtain higher carrier collect efficiency, defect-less device is required.

MPPC : VUV Detection

For physics experiments using LXe or LAr scintillator Liquid xenon

(LXe) and liquid-argon (LAr) is used as scintillator. Their peak spectra

are in VUV region and their temperatures are cryogenic.

Low temp. Resistance

• VUV-MPPC is adopted the metal quenching resistor to keep pulse shape at

low temperature.

• The metal resistor has 1/5 lower temperature coefficient of resistance than

poly-Si resistor and it has excellent stability.
