History of Mollusk Classification

● 384-322B.C.: Aristotle classified Mollusks into two groups; Malachia (cephalopods) and Ostracodermata

● 23-79 A.D.: Pliny changes the names to Mollia and Testacea

● 17th century: Jonstonus changed Mollia to Mollusca

Through the next couple of hundred years, many scientists contributed to changes in the classification of mollusks:

● 1758- Linnaeus

● 1795- Cuvier

● 1806- Dumeril

● 1801-1816: Jean Lamarck; removed

tunicates and barnacles from mollusca
