Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.

Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible. If you are having trouble getting your child/ ren to school every day, please pop

Another great cooking session was had by Year 3/4 Weaire last Wednesday. The student’s skills have further developed and we are now creating quite sophisticated meals. There were apples, pears and potatoes to peel and slice. This week’s menu was:

Potato and Spinach Tarts

Eggplant Dip with toasted Turkish crostini

Corn Fritters with Avocado and Tomato Salsa

Strawberry, Pear and Apple Crumble Red Apron winners last week were Dalsen Giles and Riley Sutherland.

On Wednesday the 23rd of May, Avon Campus students from Foundation to Year Two participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). This event is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 18th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's

book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses Key Learning Areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. Avon students gathered in together to watch “Hickory Dickory Dash” by Tony Wilson, read by Playschool presenter, Jay Laga’aia. In their classrooms, we wrote about our favourite part of the story. “ I liked the jokes they told like when the cat stepped on the nappy. The room smelt like “ew”. Do you get it? I love books!” – Boden Hazell. Congratulations Katie, Lily, Sebastian and Harry

Hello from the KEAPS team,

As part of KEAPS running in your school, we have 6 parenting topics we would like to share with

you through your school newsletter over the next 6 weeks. As every parent does their best to deal

with the challenges of bringing up children, we hope you find this parenting information helpful

for you and your family. Topic 4-Family Problem Solving Tips

It’s normal to have problems that need to be discussed as a family. Doing this calmly and respectfully together

teaches your children how to manage problems that will come up in their own lives.

Find a suitable time and schedule it to problem solve together. Try to avoid times when people are tired,

hungry or upset.

Focus on one problem at a time

State the problem clearly

Consider the desired behaviour and whether this is realistic. If you feel it is state this goal clearly.

Encourage imaginative suggestions to achieving this goal - be open to new ideas!

Evaluate the possible solutions.

Write down a plan. Be specific!

Praise your child’s efforts in the problem solving process.

Adapted from Carolyn Webster-Stratton

In the Foundation rooms we are becoming waste warriors! We have been learning all about how to sort our rubbish, what happens to recycling materials and how we can reduce, reuse and recycle. We are trying to pack ‘nude food’ in our lunchboxes and recycle anything and everything we can in the classroom. We use compost bins for fruit scraps and an organics bin for citrus peels and tissues. We also have a cans/hard plastic recycle bin, a paper/cardboard recycle bin and a ‘Redcycle’ soft plastics bin that gets taken to Coles at the end of each week. Our goal was to only empty our rubbish bin on a Friday, but we are doing even better than expected! Take a look at some of our healthy no waste lunchboxes.

On Friday 18th June we held an awesome Cross Country event for our Benalla P-12 Year 3-6 students. This was a day of ups and downs! Our District event had been cancelled earlier that morning but the P-12 community decided not to let a little bit of rain get in the way. We ran our very first Cross Country at Avon campus utilizing the bike track around the school. Our Year 3/4s competed first followed by the 5/6s. There was plenty of cheering as House members completed their race. A very big thank you goes to our parent helpers who helped out for the entire event. We can’t do it without you. And also to Ross Hill and Emily Neilson who set the course up at short notice. The final results: 1st Hotham (yellow) 2nd Stirling (red) 3rd Buller (blue) 4th Buffalo (green)

Congratulations to all students. Notes for Division level will be sent out during the week.

We have a number of Benalla P-12 College students participating in the Tomorrow Today Connect9 program this term. Connect9 is a ten week community based mentoring program. The aims of the program include connecting young people with the opportunities that are available in Benalla. Each student is also matched with a mentor who has hobbies and skills to share, together with good connections in our community. Last week, students had a great night at Benalla Bowls Club with their mentors. This included learning basic skills and rules of the game, fun competition and a BBQ dinner. It was wonderful to see our students participating in this opportunity and interacting with each other and their mentors in such a positive manner. Another group of Benalla P-12 students are currently being interviewed for selection in this popular program which will run

again next term. Sue Oakley Pathways to Retention Coordinator

Hands On Learning

www.benallap-12college.vic.edu.au 10

In senior English classes, Year 10 and 11 students have recently been completing persuasive speeches. Topics have ranged from “Do we spend too much time on social media?” to “Should netballers be paid the same as footballers in local Football/Netball clubs? The topics have caused some interesting debates and discussions in classes, as students have sought to clarify their thinking, find useful evidence to support their views and express themselves in the most fluent and persuasive manner. There has been much extra time spent at recesses and lunchtimes to rehearse and deliver speeches, with both students and teachers prepared to give up that extra cup of coffee or snack in order to ensure that the tasks were completed. Year 12 English students have been studying the novel Burial Rites by Australian author Hannah

Kent. It is set in Iceland and students have been interested to learn that the average winter temperatures in Benalla are the same as the average summer temperatures in Iceland, even though the sun shines for over 20 hours each day in the middle of summer in Iceland. Needless to say, winter in Iceland is MUCH colder than winter in Benalla. The novel tells the story of Agnes Magnusdottir. She lives with the family of Jon Jonsson. Her name means daughter of Magnus. You can see the similarity between the Icelandic language and English through the words son and daughter (dottir). There are virtually no trees in Iceland because of the cold weather, so traditional buildings were made mainly of turf blocks cut from the ground in summer, with a small amount of imported wood for doors and other fittings. The walls and roofs of the houses literally “grow” in the summer months. These images reminded the students of Hobbiton from Roald Dahl’s novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. All English students in Years 10 and 11 are approaching Mid-Year exams and are studying the material they have covered throughout the semester. Year 12 classes are leading up to their last School Assessed Coursework task for the semester, so everyone has plenty to do at the moment. We wish all of our students well for their exams and SACs.

Hands on Learning have been working on the Faithfull Street Wetlands project. This project was successful in gaining nearly $1,000 from the Landcare Powerful Youth Projects Program. Smiths Tree Services have donated two loads of mulch that has been spread over the banks of the wetlands to prepare the area for planting. Community partners are an essential part of gaining this funding, so thanks to Smiths for their support. This funding will go towards putting a rock base in the ponds, purchasing some indigenous plants for the banks and providing

signage to explain the importance of ephemeral (wetlands that dry out in Summer) wetlands in our environment. We will keep you updated with further works on the project.
