Everyone who is of truth hears my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” (Jn 18:36-38a, RSV) Dear Friends: Nancy and I are entering our 15 th month with you as we prepare to close out Year B of the church’s three-year lectionary of collects and Bible readings. During November we will celebrate Thanksgiving Day together, and later in the month, Christ the King Sunday. The former is a feast of the Episcopal Church, and we will observe Thanksgiving Day with a worship service of Holy Eucharist on Wednesday, November 21, at 7:00 p.m. Although Christ the King is not a feast day for us, it is observed in the Roman Catholic Church, and many Episcopal congregations celebrate the day voluntarily. In any event, Christ the King (or the Reign of Christ) falls on November 25. Considering the church year broadly for a moment, I think it appropriate that we conclude the year with these two feast days. Thanksgiving should not be restricted to one day a year; you and I should be offering thanks regularly every day of our lives. But this year, later in November, I hope the congregation will focus on the blessings we have been receiving throughout the year, and then a few days later, focus on the King, the one “from whom all blessings flow.” As November gives way to December, we will enter Advent of Year C and the annual cycle of collects and readings begins again, this time with an emphasis on the Gospel of Luke. The gospel story for Christ the King is from John, and although the other gospels use the trial and the cross to proclaim him King, here Jesus’ royal status dominates his interrogation by Pilate. The account is full of motion with Jesus and Pilate coming in and going out. Two trials are in progress, one featuring Pilate and the Jews as they discuss Jesus’ fate, and the other directly between Pilate and Jesus. Early in the passage, Pilate enters the praetorium, disinclined to listen to any of the Jews’ stories of kings and messiahs. But now Pilate hears of Jesus’ kingship in unfamiliar terms, a kingship of making God known to the world, of bearing witness to the truth, and of bringing into his kingdom all people of the truth. During his interrogation, Jesus speaks not of himself but of the kingdom, that place that Nicodemus learned about earlier, that place of community where God reigns. Pilate’s response is dismissive and brusque: “What is truth?” This is not the sign of a searching mind but the sign of one who is closed to Jesus’ word. Continued on Page 2 ...

Dear Friends:

Nancy and I are entering our 15th month with you as we prepare to close out Year B of the church’s three-year lectionary of collects and Bible readings.

The Garage Sale Saturday the 10th

was a great success. The chapel

was overflowing with merchan-

dise donations, which spread

out onto the sidewalks and

courtyard. The day was perfect

with sunny skies, and the youth

prepared delicious chili dogs.

The sales at the bake sale were

also brisk. Many thanks to organizer

Claudette Peck, and to all the

volunteers who gave their time and

energy from donating,delivery to set-

up to pricing, to selling, and collect-

ing the funds, to packing up

and donating the leftovers.

You are the greatest!!!

Cont’d. from pg. 1 ...from Father Reed

Failure to give thanks can be one of the biggest pitfalls, something we should always guard against as individuals and as a congregation. But at least as damaging to our spirituality would be following in the example of Pilate, to be dismissive of and closed to Jesus’ word.

Faithfully,

Fr. Reed+

A great big hug & thank you to all

the members of the ECW, and Greg

Euston who baked and brought

goodies to the Bake Sale… and

Thanks too for all the crafters who

Nancy Freeman shared this photo of Christ with the Bible

study class when studying Revelation. Helen Euston re-

searched this about it: An artist at a young age, Hunt was

thrown out of the Royal Academy of Art after a philosophical

clash with Sir Joshua Reynolds. At age 21, he joined with

Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais to found the

Pre-Raphaelite movement. They wanted to emphasize

detailed observation of nature in the spirit of truth and

devotion. Their movement was called Pre-Raphaelite because

GIVING BACK

EXTRAVAGANT GENEROSITY Greg Euston

During October we looked at the spiritual aspects of Extravagant Generosity. Our hope was to broaden our understanding of giving back a portion of the gifts God has bestowed upon us.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone in our congregation who turned in the Estimate of Giving form. We would like to especially thank those who are new to pledging and those who found it in their hearts to increase their pledges. Our pledges allow us to plan better and to pursue our Mission of Reaching out to the Community.

If you missed the opportunity to return the Estimate of Giving form and would like to make a pledge, extra forms are available in the office. Or if you prefer, you can at any time during the year simply complete the green Pledge Card in the pew rack.

Even if you are unable to pledge, we want you to know you are always welcome in our church family. We want you to come share the love and the inspiration of our service and the Eucharist.

Remember too, that gifts of time and talent are always welcome. It seems as if there is always something that needs to be done. An excellent opportunity to contribute time is to participate in our once a month workday. We spend a Saturday morning on various projects around our buildings and grounds. Afterwards, we enjoy lunch together in the Parish Hall.

As always, if there are any questions about your pledge or about pledging in general, don’t hesitate to ask Father Reed, Rev. Carrie or myself.

Have a Blessed and safe Thanksgiving. Greg Euston

Advent Studies

The season of Advent is drawing near. Advent is the beginning of a

new year for the Church. Our three-year lectionary cycle will move

to Year C and the Gospel focus will be on Luke. This season is a time

for preparation and anticipation for the coming of Christ. The word

Advent means ‘coming to’ in Latin. In preparation for Christ coming to

be with us, we will have two studies:

First, we will follow the pattern of last year’s studies where we will

meet each Wednesday in the parish hall. Our studies will begin on

Nov. 28th (this date is before Advent but will allow four studies before

Christmas). All studies will be from 6:00-7:45 p.m. We will begin

each study with soup and salad. This year we will do character studies

on the special people in Luke’s gospel who were directly connected

with the coming of Christ. Those people are: Zachariah, Eliza-

beth, Mary, Joseph, the Innkeeper, and Jesus. The participants

will have a booklet with study information regarding each character.

We will ask for volunteers to provide the soup each week.

Second, the Sunday school class will study the lectionary readings for

each Sunday in Advent beginning on December 2nd. This group will

have study aids to guide and focus the discussions.

You are invited to participate in one or both of these activities. I pray

that they will enlighten you and help you to prepare for the coming of

Christ.

...of the Renaissance, Raphael, had rejected the

quasi-religious themes of the medieval school, in favor

of rationalism. They wanted to return to the themes

of medieval art, using the latest materials and

techniques.

After some success, Hunt traveled to the Holy Land

to get a feel of the people and geography for future

works. He was so enchanted that he built a house

there and returned regularly. He says in his auto-

biography that he wished to “use my powers to make

more tangible Jesus Christ’s history and teaching”:

(Pre-Raphaelitism and the Pre-Raphaelite Brother-

hood, vol.1, p. 439). The picture (shown on pg. 2,)

is the late version of The Light of the World which

hangs in the nave of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.

Two earlier versions hang at Keble College, Oxford

and Manchester City Art Gallery.
