The Conversation: Have You Had it YET? In early September, the Oahu United Honpa Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association hosted their annual education seminar and convention. During the seminar, we had three women from Kokua Mau hold a “Talk Story” type workshop on palliative care and decision-making when we become ill or incapacitated. The women presented vital information that, for the most part, are afraid to talk about with our family and friends. Often, we get terrified when we hear our health care provider ask if we completed or have “Provider Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment” or “Advanced Directives.” We should not be afraid for have this important “conversation” with our loved ones. Documents like these offer our families the peace of mind when having to answer those hard questions in our needs times of emergencies or life threating illnesses. Together you and your loved ones can create a pathway of comfort and dignity when our time comes. In a way, yes, it does sound morbid, however in Buddhism, this “conversation” attempts to set forth a mindful path for your loved ones as then they are educated into what YOU want and how do you and your loved ones get to that point. Many who left that day came out of the workshop a little more educated and comfortable to start having the “conversation” with their loved ones. Also they were more aware to the resources that are available to them when needing to plan this “conversation.” Over the next couple of weeks, Mililani Hongwanji will start to make some of these resources available to all of their members and friends to help them plan and come up with their needs. As I visit many of our members, I have started to see that many of them are starting to have forms like the “Provider Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment” form on their refrigerators or by their phones. Many first responders are trained to look out for these bright green forms in times of emergencies. Also in speaking with many families who were aware of their loved one’s “Advanced Directives”, they were more at peace of mind knowing that they did exactly what their loved ones asked for. So as we start to head into the holiday season, as we start to gather as family. Let us start to plan this “Conversation” with our loved ones. Lets all try to take the time to “talk story” about this important issue.

Aloha Kakou, Thanks to you, my life has been enriched with new experiences and opportunities to meet new people and learn

new and interesting things! On September 9-11, 2016, five of our Mililani Sangha Members attended the 53rd Annual Lay Association Convention at Wailuku Hongwanji Mission on Maui. The theme was “ABCs for the XYZs” to discuss how we can grow our own sangha. We were all totally overwhelmed with the warm hospitality and fabulous food served at every meal! Nobody can beat the neighbor islands, right? Highlights of business con ducted: Resolutions approved: 1) Condolence for the late Ross Akiyoshi Oue, member of Kona Hongwanji, 2) All Hongwanji temples will share accomplishments of the five-year theme “Embrace Change,” which other temples can emulate, 3) Establishing uniform policies and guidelines governing temporary ministerial assignments, 4) Gathering information from temples who share the services and costs of a minister to establish accurate com pensation policies, and 5) Bylaw change allowing the Bishop Selection Committee to consider the current

Bishop for appointment to another 4-year term. These measures will be referred to the 105th Legislative Assembly in for final approval in February 2017. Stay tuned! We were treated to outstanding speakers who inspired us with their innovative strategies, messages explaining the generational divide, understanding social media, branding and marketing Jodo Shinshu in modern day terms, and common concerns about retaining and bringing in new people. New Oahu officers elected for 2016-2017: President Warren Tamamoto (Aiea), Vice President

Russel Nonaka (Aiea), Secretary Rene Mansho (Mililani), Asst. Sec. Susan Morishige (Aiea), Treasurer Evan Watarida (Waipahu), Auditors Dean Sakamoto (Mililani), Richard Tokuoka (Pearl City), Advisors Stan Sasaki and Bob Asato (Mililani), Don Matsumoto

(Waialua), and Francis Uyeno (Waipahu). Finally, mark your calendars for October activities -3rd “C.A.R.E. Day” at Mililani Adult Day Care at 9:15 am, and you can join us for

lunch to follow at the new Paliuli Restaurant, 22nd –“Patch of Madness” at Mililani Hongwanji, from 9 am to 1 pm. Bring your family, keiki pick their pumpkins from the Mililani Hongwanji Pumpkin Patch and bring your own utensils to compete in our pumpkin

carving contest. Cost of $5.00 per person will be collected for pumpkins, prizes, hot dogs, chips, and bottled water (everyone receives a monetary prize). Signup sheet on bulletin board or call me at 291-6151 or email me ([email protected]) with

names and ages of children participating, . Be safe, be happy, and be healthy. A hui hou! In gassho, Rene

Mililani Hongwanji Judo Club succeeds at Summer Judo tournament. MHJC returns with an impressive success record in winning 14 medals for their 23 competitors (60% award record) at the 2016 “Grassroots” Summer Junior & Senior National Championship tournament held at the University of Califor-nia Irvine campus in the beautiful Bren Events Center on July 2 -3. Over the past year, competitors worked tirelessly and diligently with countless practices, conditioning workouts, strength training and multiple fundraisers along the way. Senseis, judoka, parents, family members, and club supporters can be proud of all the hard work over the past year, the clubs exceptional performance at the tournament, and an ultimate honor of winning the individual male spirit award and female sportsmanship award from over 1500 competitors! Competitors enjoyed meeting and competing amongst contestants from the US, Canada, Mexico and Tahiti to name a few and look forward to working just as hard next year. The Mililani Hongwanji Judo Club thanks the Mililani community for their generous support in helping the club with the opportunity to participate in National tournaments to showcase our local competitor’s tiger spirit and positive sportsmanship values.

Pink Sunday

On October 9, Mililani Hongwanji will be having another Sangha Participation Event. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign in which many organizations and chari-ties do activities in the hopes of raising awareness to this disease. A recent study showed that many people (yes even men) are aware of breast cancer and yet forget or do not know the steps to detect for the disease, especially in its early stages.

Many organizations like the National Football League, Macy’s, AAA and others will partner with the American Cancer Society to promote Cancer Awareness Month. You will see football players, coaches, and referees wear pink uni-forms, and others too will be wearing pink or have a pink ribbon on throughout the month (yes, even Rev. David swims in his pink Cancer Awareness Month swim suit throughout October.) So if you see them, give them a hug and tell them how much you appreciate them and support them.

We've been quite busy at the end of summer amidst getting back in the school groove! Our Junior YBA coordi-nated the lantern parade on Friday, August 19th for Mililani Hongwanji's Obon, kicking off the 2 nights of bon dance. After the lantern parade, the juniors stayed to help with various areas: food booth, trash and recycling, and at the silent auction. They had so much fun, they have decided they want to continue to assist with coordi-nating the lantern parade next year! The following week, we met at Pearl City Hongwanji for our craft night. The theme this time was summer and beach. Using paper plates and bowls, paint, shells, coral, driftwood, sand origami paper and glue, we created over 30 unique centerpieces to give to the Pearl City nursing home. We have so much fun unleashing our inner creativity to make beauty out of what some may see as junk or trash. The very next day, Saturday, August 27th, Continuing the busy weekend, the Juniors ran the shave ice booth at Aiea Hongwanji's Obon. We made bowls of shave ice and syrup, some topped with condensed milk all night and sold out at 9:00pm! We even had some juniors who provided "catering" service by bringing shave ice orders di-rectly to the guests in their chairs! Our upcoming activities include: Annual Jr. YBA membership drive in October, hosting the Federation Meeting on Saturday, October 29th and our Mahalo Car Wash at Aiea Hongwanji on Sunday, October 2, 11:30am-2:00pm. The car wash will be compli-mentary for members providing the coupon in the newsletter! Thank you for all your continued support!

Welcome all to our 2016-2017 Dharma School year! We kicked off the year with our annual Rally Day on August 28th, which this year also featured a Penny Carnival that included fun games, prizes, and yummy piz-za and chili. Thanks to all who helped with the make the day a great success! On September 11th, the Dharma School students practiced reciting the Golden Chain of Love and the Eightfold Path. Students (and adults too) then made their own custom onenju. We celebrated Peace Day on September 18th by listening to stories about Peace and making our own Peace notes which will be a part of our (paper) Peace quilt. Our thanks to Gay Tanaka and Roger Babcock who represented the Dharma School/Jr. YBA as Sunday ser-vice emcees during the month of September. The month of October will feature a full schedule of exciting activities! Here’s what we have planned:
