I would like to thank Father Michael and Father Ignatius for covering for me and serving in the parish during my time away while on my sabbatical. I also appreciate your understand-ing of my absence for the last four months. It has been a time of grace for me. To be away from the parish’s ministries has rekindled my love to serve as a parish priest. I started my sabbatical with a two-week retreat at the Huong Duong’s Student Center in Dalat, Vietnam. Dalat is a beautiful ever-spring city. Most of the students were away for the summer so it was very quiet. I was able to rest, pray and finish the translation of the book “The Life of Christ” by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen as a “gift” for my 30th anniversary. I then attended two different priestly ordinations; one for some of the students I have taught, and one for the son of my cousin. I also attended three religious professions of the sisters of three different congregations. It has been a blessing to see so many young peo-ple in Vietnam that are responding to God’s call to priesthood and religious life. I visited the Clinic of My Linh where the Dominican Sisters of Rosa Lima are serving. There they serve the poorest of the poor and the people who suffer with Hansen’s Disease. I also visited three missions of the Congregation of the Mother of the Redeemer. I was very impressed and touched by the works at these missions of the priests and brothers of the CRM religious community. They serve the poor, helping to build houses and bridges, tutoring students in remoted villages, serving meals to the poor outside a hospital and the daily workers every day. But the best part of my sabbatical was my visit to five different or-phanages. Most of them I have never met, but the children allowed me to carry them and they clanged to me as their parent. One evening when I was praying in the Chapel, a tod-dler carrying her bottle had come looking for me. She really cracked (touched) my heart. To conclude my sabbatical, I participated in a retreat at the Convent of the “Las Hermanas Misioneras Siervas Del Divino Espiritu” in La Ceja, Colombia. La Ceja is also an ev-er-spring city. I am in love with this city’s weather. Here I spent time to reflect and give thanks to God for all the beauti-ful experiences over my sabbatical. I also finished reading the book “The Priest Is Not of His Own” by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. I wish I had read this book sooner! Sheen states that a parish priest must have the heart of a missionary. This gives me the affirmation for what I have experienced. But my call has always been to be a parish priest where I feel I belong, and I am happy to be back with you at our St. Maxi-milian Kolbe Catholic Community! Please welcome me back! Father John Kha Tran

A LITTLE FAITH Today our readings are about faith, frus-tration, and how much is enough. Hab-akkuk is a complainer having an argu-ment with God. Timothy is encouraging a community challenged by cowardice and the apostles want more faith than they have. Things aren’t happening fast enough for any of them or for us. All of them and we want God to do something sooner rather than later and we want God to give us a reason to believe that it will all work out. What does God do? God puts it back on them--and us--telling Hab-akkuk to describe the world he wants; telling the apostles to do more than the expected. Doing more with less is a fa-miliar phrase today and a reminder that a little faith may be enough even for the most difficult times. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS That our actions and words reflect our love for God every day. “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timo-thy 1:7 Many of us compartmentalize our Faith, we bring it out only when we attend Mass or when we at-tend a parish event. Being a good steward re-quires discipline and striving to put God first in everything, all the time. The next time you are at a neighborhood party, at work or out shopping, would your actions signal to others that you are a good and faithful servant of our Lord?

Please do not tape offertory/donation envelopes.

Join us on Thursday, October 17, at 6:30pm in Kolbe Hall as Sister Vinflora, parish pastoral assistant, shares with us her life, her community, and her love for the Lord. Bring your questions, a potluck dish (if you would like), and even a teen or young lady to enjoy this fun even-ing of friendship and faith! Contact Deena Everest at [email protected] or Mayra Wade at [email protected] with questions.
