ROUND-TABLE DISCUSSION
of the Future for
ABERTRIDWR
On Sunday the 11th August 2013 the populace will have the opportunity to
have their say as to what their thoughts are on the future of Abertridwr and
what they would like to see the group achieve, not only in the short term but
long term as well.
The questions to be asked on the day are below and , if possible,
please list up to three things in each category.
This discussion is looking to the future of the Group and not dwelling on the
immediate past, so it is hoped that submissions will reflect this.
If you choose to, you can send them to Galen at [email protected]
[1], who will bring them on the day. Also, please be aware that, as
part of this discussion, names need not be placed on the questionnaire.
The discussion slips that are submitted will be picked at random to
form the basis of the general round table discussion.
The questions for the day are:
1. 3 Things Abertridwr Does Well
2. 3 Things that could be improved upon
3. 3 Things to make Abertridwr Awesome in the future
*** Please Note: We will always endeavour to get through all
submission presented for discussion on the day, time permitting. If we
run out of time and have not been able to discuss all the submissions,
please do not feel offended. ***

Abertridwr 4 Man Melee 2013
Although a much smaller list than in previous years the Abertridwr 4 man melee was another fun event with 3 teams : Barony of
Aneala, House Knights Bridge and The Bastion all entering teams. The day was won by The Bastion with the Baron and Baroness of Aneala presenting replica medieval coins to the victors. Fighting scenarios followed the tourney and a wonderful potluck feast augmented by left over's from the Not As It Seems Feast (very yummy). Congratulations to Lord Meyrick for an other high quality event. Thanks to M’Lady Lauren who ran an excellent list (first time), M’Lady Kolfinna who marshalled the whole day, M’lady Clotilde
who Heralded both field and court. And Viscountess Rhianwen who constabled the day.

Advanced Armoured Combat Training School
16 armoured combatants took the opportunity to learn from Duke Fabian over the 4 day training weekend, all participants thought they got something out of the weekend and most of us would love to have more time with this very talented teacher. Special thanks to the Barony of Aneala and the Canton of Abertridwr for funding the visit and
to Viscountess Rhianwen for feeding us all over the 4 days food was very tasty.

Category 4. Pastries & Pies Lady Alianore de Essewell
The Goodman of Paris [Le Menagier de Paris] A Treatise on Moral and Domestic Economy by a Citizen of Paris c 1393 Translated by Eileen Powers, The Folio Society 1993
All below recipes and references come from the above titled book.
The recipe, To make a Tart [Tourte] puts me in mind of a quiche, however I have found the filling suitable for closed
pies and pastys as well, using modern short crust and puff pastry [although it seemed to work better in the puff pastry] and as such, was used in Aneala’s Not as it seems Feast [ie the Spinach Parcels]. It proved popular, so here is the recipe…
Page 183. Goodman of Paris
To make a tart, take four handfuls of beets, two handfuls of parsley, a handful of chervil, a sprig of fennel and two handfuls of spinach, and pick them over and wash them in cold water, then cut them up very small: then bray with two sorts of cheese, to wit a hard and medium, and then add eggs thereto, yolks and whites, and bray them in the chees: then put the herbs into the mortar and bray alto-gether and also put therein some fine powder. Or instead of this have ready brayed in the mortar two heads of ginger and onto this bray your cheese, eggs and herbs and then cast old cheese scraped or grated onto the herbs and take it to the oven and then have your tart made and eat it hot. ‘A Tart’ page 183. Ingredients Beets a possible reference to a type of silver beet 4 handfuls 2 cups Parsley herb 2 handfuls 1 cup Chervil herb: a sweeter type of Parsley 1 handful ½ cup Fennel herb a sprig Spinach 2 handfuls 1 cup Cheese hard had to guess at the amount of cheese… ¾ cup Cheese medium used cheddar in substitution ¾ cup Eggs yolks and whites 4 eggs Page 196. Take of white ginger an ounce and a dram, of selected cinnamon a quarter, of cloves and grain [of paradise] each half a quarter of an ounce and of lump sugar a quarter and reduce them to powder
Fine Powder
Ginger 1 ounce Cinnamon ¼ ounce Cloves 1/8 ounce Grains of Paradise 1/8 possible substitute Long Pepper and Cardamom
Sugar ¼ ounce *Take the greens and pick the leaves from their stalks, then wash all in cold water, afterwhich cut them small. *Grate a hard and medium cheese and mix with eggs *Put the greens into a mortar [bowl] and mix then add your fine [spice] powder *Add the eggs and cheese mix to the greens and combine thoroughly *Omitted [Place in your precooked pie coffin and cook in the oven, about 25mins] *Instead, placed 1/8 cup of mix in a square of store bought puff pastry, rolled and crimped the ends. Brushed over with egg wash then paced in the oven at [my oven 250 degrees for 30mins]The above is my translation of the Tart recipe Cantal cheese [available at The Mousetrap, Fremantle Markets] When looking into what sort of cheese to use [reference – Hard Cheese, medium cheese, old cheese], I looked through the book and found this poem, about how to choose a good cheese. It is on page 169 and this is the English translation from the old French. So I did an internet search on French cheeses and during my search learned that a hard cheese refers to those that are pressed during production to remove moisture and as they age, they become even firmer and more pungent and crumbly. I found one cheese called Cantal. It is described as a hard cheese with a skin and has been made and used in France since Gallic times and so may be the type of cheese spoken of in the poem and used. Cantal has three ages, young, medium and old and the older it gets the harder. The hard cheese of the recipe may refer to aged Cantal and Medium may refer to younger cheese. The final result was a delicious light pastry parcel, which also won the A&S competition at Aneala Midwinter – The Not as it Seems Feast. [it was disguised in the shape of a fish]
Cooks Corner
Not white as snow, like fair Helen, Nor moist, like tearful Magdalen Not like Argus full of eyes, But heavy, like a bull of prize. Well resisting thumb pressed in, And let it have a scaly skin. Eyeless and tearless, in colour not white. Scaly, resisting and weighing not light
