Arthur Leroy MisnerArthur Leroy Misner, 80, of Morley, passed

away Friday, April 13, 2012, at his home.Arthur was born November 22, 1931 in Io-

nia, the son of Gerald Gates and Inez Mis-ner. He was raised in Ionia and attended theBadder Country School. Art served his coun-try honorably with the Army in the KoreanWar from 1952 until 1954. Art met his wife ata dance in Palo and in 1957, Art married Geor-

gia Shattuck Misner at the LaValley Church inIonia. Georgia preceded Art in death in 2010.

Art worked for Van Houten Roong, Band B Garbage Disposal, Ralphs Junk Yardand retired from Browns Corporation in Io-nia after 24-plus years. Arts hobbies includ-ed hunting, shing, trapping, country music,mushrooming and yard saling with his wife.

Art is survived in death by his children,Amanda Woodbury of Lyons, Art (KarenRoberts) Misner of Morley and Robert (Car-olyn) Misner of Edmore; 10 grandchildren,eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Midge(Jess) Freeman of Ionia; and several nieces,nephews and friends.

Art was preceded in death by his wife,Georgia Misner; parents, Gerald and InezMisner; ve brothers and two sisters.

Services for Art took place at the BrighamFuneral Chapel in Lakeview, with Pastor Rog-er Cooper ofciating, with Interment at theHinton Township Cemetery in Morley.

Memorial contributions in Arts name canbe made to the family.

Rex A. RynoELKHART Rex A. Ryno, 58, of Elkhart,

passed away at 11:58 p.m. Saturday, April 14,2012, at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Cen-ter in Mishawaka. He was born Aug. 23, 1953,in Howard City, to John Henry and Marie

(Sears) Ryno.Surviving is his companion, Darcy Joiner

of Elkhart; six children, Rex Wheeler Rynoof North Carolina, Josh-ua (Amanda) Ryno ofHastings, Amy Lindseyof Wayland, Jason (An-drea) Seedorff of Goshen,Brandon (Phetsamone)Seedorff and CassandraSeedorff, both of Elkhart;11 grandchildren and onebrother, Walter Punk(Rita) Ryno of Evart. Alsosurviving are four sisters, Carolyn Tessman ofTustin, Vickie Waters of Howard City, Phyl-lis (Gene) Ax of Grand Rapids, and Barbara(Roy) Cline of Jackson and a brother-in-law,

Don Kroll of Muskegon. He was preceded indeath by his parents, four brothers and onesister.

Rex enjoyed gardening, being outdoorsand tinkering in his garage. He was a semi-retired auto body repairman.

Cremation will take place at Elkhart Cre-mation Services. A Celebration of Life Servicewill be held at 3 p.m., Monday, April 23, 2012,at the Heckman Funeral Home in HowardCity. Elkhart Cremation Services is entrustedwith arrangements.

Irene PennellIrene Pennell, 87, of Howard City passed

away April 14, 2012, at her residence.She was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Grand Rap-

ids, the daughter of Earl and Fannie (Tato)Keen. During her working years she workedat American Seating for more than ve yearsand also worked at the grocery store whichwas located on Wineld Lake years ago. Ireneloved reading and spending time with family.

Surviving are four children, Betty Marcellaof Morley, Janet (Tom) Sanders of Coral, EarlPennell of Howard City and Kenneth Pennellof Howard City; six grandchildren and fourgreat-grandchildren; one sister, JoAnn Van-Ort of Grand Haven; and many nieces andnephews. She was preceded in death by herparents; her husband, Earl and two brothers,Dona and Fred.

Private Family services will take place at alater date. Burial will be in Blytheeld Memo-rial gardens in Rockford. Arrangements wereentrusted to The Heckman Funeral home ofHoward City.

MCC appoints Shoen to board

SIDNEY The Montcalm Commu-nity College Board of Trustees appointedStephen Shoen, of Stanton, to its boardduring its regular meeting on Tuesday.

Shoen replaces Richard Ellafrits, of

Greenville, who resigned on March 13.His appointment is effective immedi-ately.

Board of Trustees President KarenCarbonelli said she appreciates Ellaf-rits service to the board and welcomesShoen as the boards newest member.

Steve has worked in many areasof our district and he understands the

community, Carbonelli said. His -nancial background and his leadershipskills will be valuable to the Board ofTrustees.

Shoen is a lifelong resident of Mont-calm County, and he is a Central Mont-calm High School graduate. He earneda bachelors degree in Business Admin-istration from Ferris State College in1971 and is a graduate of the University

of Michigan Graduate School of Bank-ing and the University of WisconsinGraduate School of Banking. He beganhis 40-year banking career at MontcalmCentral Bank (now Chemical Bank) in1971 and served in the roles of ofcertrainee, assistant manager and branchmanager. He joined Sidney State Bankin 1983 as assistant vice president and

loan ofcer. He was promoted to vicepresident in 1987, and in 1992 he suc-ceeded Rex Rice as president/CEO andchairman of the banks board of direc-tors. Shoen retired from Sidney StateBank in December 2010 after 27 yearsof service. He still serves on the banksboard of directors.

Ellafrits joined the MCC Board ofTrustees in December 1999 and served

as the treasurer.Dick served us very well as treasur-

er of the board, Carbonelli said. His -nancial background and expertise madehim a very valuable board member. Hewas particularly effective in long-rangeplanning and projections. We really ap-preciate his service to Montcalm Com-munity College.

Ryan Ringler, 11, son of Paul andJane Ringler of Cedar Springs, haslearned from a early age what it takesto be a champion. When many kids areenjoying video games and watching t.v.after school, Ryan and his brother Jor-dan are on a wrestling mat. The Ringlerboys began wrestling as early as theirpreschool days. Over these years, theboys have become accustomed to start-ing the season in November and practic-ing most days of the week for half of theyear. This commitment and determina-tion leads them to the annual, spring,state nals and also the national tourna-ment for youth wrestling. The two larg-est and most meaningful competitionsfor every wrestler.

All the time, effort and hard workpaid off just two weeks ago, as Ryanaccomplished his goal by taking statechampion for the third time for Michi-gan. He pinned every opponent. Andthis past week, he attended the nationalcompetition and was awarded the Na-tional Champion title for the 100 poundweight class. This was Ryans rst indi-vidual national title. Only the top fourplace wrestlers in each state could par-ticipate in this prestigious competition.

Ryan is no stranger to a national

championship, as this past winter, hetried out and was accepted onto theelite, (MyWay) Michigan, travel team.They battled against several elite, out ofstate teams. At the end of these duals,Michgian conquered and took home thechampion title. Ryan had contributed tothis national victory, as he pulled out awin every time he took the mat.

When asked about the state and na-tional tournaments, Ryan never ques-tioned if he could do it, he believed inhimself and this was his year. He pre-pared and worked out, even on thosedays he didnt feel like exerting himself.Given the tough, frustrating, contactsport, that wrestling is, and the practicetime that it takes to be successful, Ryanshowed commitment, respect for hisfellow wrestlers, as well as, the ofcials.And he continually presented a good at-titude and sportsmanship. For that iswhat his family is truly proud of.

Side Note: Ryans older brother Jor-dan also made the the national team.Both boys will continue to travel withthese teams this summer. Jordan placed3rd at the state nals and should be giv-en much credit for Ryans success, dueto the motivation and help given to hisyounger brother all year.

HOMETOWN HEROKevin D. Carrier

Army 2nd Lt. Kevin D. Carrier has graduated from Of-cer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Columbus,Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in theU.S. Army.

During the 12 weeks of training, the ofcer candidatereceived basic soldiering instruction in leadership, pro-fessional ethics, soldier team development, combinedarms tactics, weapons defense, combat water sur-vival, squad drill, intelligence, eldtraining exercises, day and nightland navigation, condenceobstacle course, commoncore tasks, communications,

staff and general militarysubjects, and physical tnesstests which include three,four and ve-mile runs, andfoot marches between 5-12miles carrying rucksacks.

The candidate is tested on lead-ership skills and team work abilitiesrequired of a commissioned ofcer. Students learned toutilize acquired skills to function in leader and followerpositions in squad and platoon sized elements, and evalu-ated in various leadership garrison positions while in astressful and demanding eld environment.

Carrier is the son of Meg Hackett of Ramsdell DriveNortheast, Rockford.

He is a 2004 graduate of Grand Rapids Catholic Cen-tral High School. He earned a bachelors degree in 2008from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.

Sand Lake Lions recycle forsightAs spring cleaning gets under way, the Sand Lake

Lions are asking people to look through dresser draw-ers and closets or used eyeglasses and donate themto the Lions Recycle For Sight program. During themonths o April and May, the Sand Lake Lions Clubwill be collecting used prescription eyeglasses andprescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part oa unique recycling program. The collected glasses willbe cleaned and prepared or distribution in develop-ing countries where eye care is oten unaordable andinaccessible. We need everyone to donate their usedeyeglasses, reading glasses and sunglasses, said RickLong, Project Chairman. In most developing countries,an eye exam can cost as much as one months wagesand a single eye doctor may serve a community ohundreds o thousands o people. The donated glasseswill be shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass RecyclingCenter where they will be cleaned, categorized byprescription and prepared or distribution by Lionsand other groups. Publicity Report: Vicky reported she placed an article in the River Valley concerningthe Used Book Sale coming up next week. Cheryl S. has also printed out posters

advertising the event and these will be placed around area businesses.Magazine Give Away Program: Renae B. brought to the memberships attention the

magazine rack needs to be replaced and moved to a different spot in the foyer. FOLmembers will discuss and decide how to facilitate this at next months meeting.

OLD BUSINESS

Used Book Sale: The spring Used Book Sale will take place on Thursday, April 19,from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and

Saturday, April 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Library. Co-Chairman Linda

G. and Harriet W. passed around a sign-up sheet for workers. Donations of used

books may be dropped off at the Library prior to the sale.

Quilt Committee Report: Linda G. reported the twin-size quilt is finished and the

Queen-size quilt should be finished by the end of the month. She also reported the

raffle tickets have arrived. The quilts will be raffled off at the Harvest Festival whichwill take place on Saturday, September 15.

NEW BUSINESS

Photo Time: In order to update the FOL membership photo on the Library website,

a group photo will be taken at next months meeting.Business Expo: The Business Expo will take place on Friday, April 27, 2012, at

Tri County High School. Renae B. will be in charge of the FOL booth. She will be

handing out materials that promote and support the use of the Library.

Michigan Notable Author: Scott Sparling, author of the book, Wire to Wire, willspeak on Thursday evening, June 7, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. The setting of his novel takes

place in the Detroit area. This event will take the place of the Book Club meeting

for June.

OTHER BUSINESS

Book Club: The book for May is Sarahs Key by Tatiana DeRossnay. The book

discussion will take place on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in the Library Reading

Room. Everyone is encouraged to read the book and join in on the discussion.
