    Miracle Sundayevent planned

    for Helping

HandsOn Sunday, June 12th at 6pm, Helping Hands, in conjunctionwith the local ministerial association, will be holding a MiracleSunday event in Ensley Park in Howard City. This event is de-signed as fundraiser for the Helping Hands building project for itsnew facility just south of the VFW Hall in Howard City.

The Miracle Sunday event has been planned in cooperationwith a number of the area churches who have cancelled their Sun-day evening services in order to participate. The event is open tothe entire community and it is hoped that signicant progress willbe made that evening toward the funds necessary for construc-tion.

It was a little over a year ago that the local ministerial associa-ion challenged Helping Hands to expand its vision and to striveo reach out to the growing needs that exist within the community.ince that time, Helping Hands has hired a ministry services coor-inator, purchased land that it now owns free and clear and razed

he old Manor Motel from the site. Much progress has been madend now Helping Hands is preparing for the exciting next stage ofhe construction process.

The recent article in the area news media(5-27-11) stating that there is a movement torecall State Sen. Judy Emmons, prompted meto respond with a few thoughts on this recallsubject.

Michigan has been on the verge of bank-ruptcy and our legislators (both parties) and

the Governor have been working diligentlyto present a balanced budget with the usualdisagreements in the process (which is to beexpected) and which is fair and balanced. Ofcourse, every special interest group (in mostcases) will not be satised with the proposed budget (not unusual) but, we as concernedcitizens must be willing to bite the bullet andaccept responsibility for our share of helpingMichigan remain nancially solvent.

Those citizens who favor this recall propos-al must not have been keeping abreast of thenancial crisis in the State of Michigan. If theydid, they should have realized that if correc-tive policies were not implemented Michiganseconomy would be in deep nancial Do-Doand this state would be oundering around ina nancial mess like the State of California andother states. Corrective measures were needed

to forestall an impending nancial crisis. To target those who voted for the proposed

budget with the threat of a recall is ill advisedand will serve no useful purpose.

Are we to assume that if our State Legisla-tors (Democrat or Republican) vote somethingthat we do not agree then we should try to re-call them for not voting the way we would likethem to do?

Just think of the Chaos that would result ifour legislators had to face a recall every timethey voted.

The idea of a recall is getting out of hand, not only causing the disruption of our legisla-tive process, but the cost of putting a RecallMotion on a Special Ballot.

I believe Judy Emmons voted for the pro-posed budget because she believed it was theright thing to do. That it would be best for theeconomic climate for our state and in the longrun it would benet the business climate in ourstate and would help create more jobs in thefuture. She had the courage to vote for whatshe thought was best for the State of Michigan, not withstanding the pressure from the specialinterest groups.

I for one applaud her for her common senseapproach for casting a yes vote on the Statesbudget proposal.

    Dont Let Your

    Tires TireBy Craig W. Armstrong

We know what they are and we know what they do,

but do we know how to take care of them? Most of us

dont think about our tires until they are flat, but not

only will proper tire maintenance save you money, it

    could save your life.

Check your tire pressure regularly-monthly and be-

fore long trips. You can purchase a traditional pencil

gauge or an easy-to-read digital gauge. (Public pres-

sure gauges are subject to abuse and may not be reli-

able.) Check all four tires when theyre cold (be-

fore startup) or after the car has set for at least threehours. Be sure to occasionally check your spare tire

also. You will find the recommended psi (pounds per

square inch) in the vehicle owners manual or on the

drivers side doorjamb; some vehicles may also have

the information inside the fuel hatch filler flap or the

glove compartment door. DO NOT rely on the pres-

sure indicated on the tire; that is the maximum psi

and does not take into account driving conditions and

    situations (speed, load, etc.).

Your tire gauge will tell you how much pressure is inthe tire. If its under the recommendation, add some

air... BUT DONT OVERINFLATE. Because air

expands when its hot and contracts when its cold,

its best to inflate your tires in the morning before the

days heat. Underinflated tires have greater friction

with the road, causing your car to work harder and

be less fuel-efficient; underinflation also causes un-

    necessary wear on tires.

Next check the wear on your tires. If the wear is ex-

cessive, you will see a smoothness that has replaced

tread. A way to check tread wear is to enlist the help

of our 16th president. Place a penny into the tires

groove with Lincolns head upside down and facing

toward you. If you can see the top of honest Abes

head, its time for a new tire. Any tread depth less

than 1/16 inch is not only dangerous but is illegal in

    many states

Your driving style has an effect on the health and

longevity of your tires. Do you drive fast? Driving at

high speeds generates heat and will reduce the life of

the tread. Its also important to consider what youre

driving over. Avoid potholes, curbs, road kill and oth-

er obstructions.Another way to keep your tires in good working order

is to rotate them every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. Rotating

your tires allows them to wear more evenly. If the tires

are original to your vehicle, your owners manual will

tell you when to rotate. If they are replacements, the

shop that installed them will recommend a schedule.

Being aware of the age of your tires is essential for

safety. Because aged tires can deteriorate from the in-

side, it is recommended that tires over six years old

not be used. Federal regulations require that a
