Happy summer, RLS 2013-

2014!

We are so excited for all of

your bright and shining faces

to be back in residence, but

we’re also pretty pumped that

you’re able to grab a break

and relax… or work your butt

off to make some money for

the school year. Whatever you

are doing this summer, we

want you to be thinking about

August and all the excitement

that awaits you back at Ryer-

son Residence.

This newsletter serves as a

way for us to communicate

with you about the exciting

things we’re planning for your

return and general informa-

tion you should know before

you arrive, but it also serves as

a way for you to get really ex-

cited for your time on staff.

You’ll get at least three of

these newsletters, explaining

who is in the office, what our

roles are, and how we’re going

to make your training and

orientation experience the

very best it can be! We’ll also

tell you about how you can be

preparing to be the best you

can be for Ryerson Residence.

In this newsletter, we’ll intro-

duce you to your residence o-

team, and we’ll reacquaint you

with some of the RLT man-

agement staff.

Have I mentioned how excited

we are for you all to come

back? We can’t wait!

Hi everyone! My name is

Hannah Van Dyk and I am

the Human Resources and

Event Management Lead for

your residence orientation.

That’s just a big fancy way of

saying that I do a lot of com-

munication management for

y’all and the ROCs, and I

also plan some events.

I worked in residence last

year as the Residence Advi-

sor on PIT14 (HOLLA), and

I loved it and the experi-

ence. I’m a third year stu-

dent at Ryerson, going into

my first year of ACS (arts

and contemporary studies)

after two years in the jour-

nalism program.

My favourite things include

Coca Cola (but I’m not

drinking any in 2013), writ-

ing, volunteering, and

cheering for the Ryerson

Rams at the Mattamy Ath-

letic Centre with my best

friends on the weekends. I’m

known for my blue and gold

love and for occasionally

wearing face paint to class.

And as my photo demon-

strates, I am so excited for

you

all

to

be

here in residence! Residence

is my favourite place on cam-

pus, and I’m so excited to

share the love and spirit I

have for Ryerson with all of

you. I cannot wait to be

cheering with you all at Wa-

ter Olympics Day, or rocking

out at the O-Week basketball

game! Hope you are all hav-

ing a phenomenal and restful

summer!

friends, enjoying music, the

outdoors and BBQs! I’m going

to Denmark this month with

my mom until May

29th because all of my family,

except my parents and sib-

lings live over there. It’s been

3 years since I last saw them

so I cannot wait! In June I’m

also going to a 3 day music

festival in Delaware with some

friends and to Alberta for a

wedding! In July and August

I’m going to escape to my cot-

tage as much as I can and get

ready for all of you to move in

of course.

Being an RLT staff member

has made my undergrad ca-

reer amazing and memorable

Hey RLT 2013! I’m Karina

and I’ve been working with

student housing services for

3 years during the school

year, first on RSD then as

an RA and a CL. Now I’ve

joined the summer team

and am planning a fantastic

Rez Orientation week for

you and all of your to-be

students! Through my ex-

perience, orientation week

has been such an important

part of the school year for

both staff and your students

so I’m really excited to be a

part of planning it this year.

This summer I’m looking

forward to traveling a

bunch visiting family and

so far and I can’t wait for all

of you to move in and for

your journey to begin (or

continue for returners!)

HAPPY SUMMER EVERY-

ONE!

Hi Team! How’s it going?

I’m Dan Cantiller and I’m returning to my role as the Academic Link Facilitator (ALF) at Ryerson Rez this fall! I’m super excited to continue being part of this community and have the chance to work with leaders like yourselves who are com-mitted to creating an amaz-ing year our residents.

In my role as the ALF, I work closely with the Res-Life Staff, leading the Aca-demic Link team and will oversee the 3 academic Liv-ing Learning Communities this year (Fashion, Commu-nity Services, and Entrepre-neurship & Innova-tion). This year, I’ll be coor-dinating RLS training in August and on-going train-ing throughout the year. I

also regularly collaborate with campus partners on academic-related initia-tives.

A little bit about where I’m from... I was born in the States and grew up in Brampton. I’m a graduate of St. Michael’s Choir School, and I completed my Bache-lor of Science in Animal Behaviour and Psychology at the University of To-ronto. I lived in residence at University College for all of my undergrad and served as a Residence Don (a.k.a. RA) for four years. As part of my pro-gram, I got to travel to Do-minica and Barbados for field courses (on forest con-servation and marine biol-ogy). I was also active in a dance company as a per-former and choreographer,

and produced the year-end show in my final year. Before joining the Ryefam, I worked for 2 years out in Victoria, BC, as a Residence Life Coor-dinator.

Love travel. Love hot choco-

late. Looking forward to

meeting you!

Hello everyone! Alex McKaig here! I am a recent graduate of Ryerson's Arts and Contempo-rary Studies Program, how-ever my time at Ryerson has not reached its end just yet! In the Fall I will be beginning graduate studies in Ryerson's Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration program. During the summer I will be wearing two different caps while working with Housing. I am the third member of the O-Team, responsible for all our O-Week marketing. Through-out the summer I will be doing my best to bring our online communities to life and get our incoming students ac-quainted with Student Hous-ing Services and our great city before they move in! I am also working on my school year portfolio.

that quote "Dance like

dancing.

ADDITIONAL FUN

this O-Week will be the

And if you choose not to

dance...you will be

asked to leave.

MEET THE

PROFESSIONAL

RES LIFE STAFF

Yes, I will be returning to RLS for my fourth year in a row as the Graduate Advisor of Rez Activities. I began my journey in residence almost three years ago as an RA. I had never lived in rez in my first year at Ryerson, but liv-ing and working in housing helped shape my unbeliev-able undergrad experience. I cannot wait to work with all of you during O-Week and into the school year in a dif-ferent capacity! In my spare time you can find me concert hopping (I dropped $200+ dollars on a Beyonce ticket - I have abso-lutely no regrets), gallivant-ing about music festivals (heading to Firefly and Osheaga this summer!), and critiquing the films at your local cinema (Yes, I LIKED

Spring Beakers). O-Week planning is in full force. RU ready for #RezOWeek2013?! To quote the lovely Jen
