A Prayer to OL of Mt. Carmel

by St. Simon Stock

O beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine, Splendor of Heaven, holy and singular,

who brought forth the Son of God, still ever remaining a Pure Virgin,

assist me in this necessity. O Star of the sea, help and protect me!

Show me that Thou art my Mother.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee!

Mother and Beauty of Carmel, Pray for us! Virgin, Flower of Carmel, Pray for us!

Patroness of all who wear the Scapular, Pray for us! Hope of all who die wearing the Scapular,

O sweet Heart of Mary, Be our salvation! Amen.

In our gospel today Jesus says the kingdom of heaven can be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. He was hoping for a great harvest! But while he was sleeping, his ene-my came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. The servant then wanted to go and pull up all the weeds. But, the master told him not to because some of the wheat would likely be destroyed in the process. He tells him to let both the weeds and wheat grow to the harvest time and then they could gather the wheat that is left and throw the weeds away.

What does all this have to do with the Kingdom of God? Well at first glance the meaning seems simple - sinners will burn in hell and true believers go to heaven. Yet I know Jesus’ parables always have a deeper meaning.

When I was in Trinidad a lady came up to me and said that she was upset because one of the people that she recognized in the mass was a “bad” and sinful person. In talking with her I found out her ex-husband was at the mass. She said: “He should not be allowed to come to church”. I told her that if we did not allow sinners into the mass we would have a pretty empty church. In talking with her further she began to see my point and got to the point where having her ex-husband at mass did not bother her anymore.

I also remember when I was first here in the Bronx I would look out at the congregation at the Spanish mass and see drug dealers, men who were cheating on their wives, teenagers who were in gangs and people who once were incarcerated. Things were pretty bad in the late 80’s. At the same time we had cops, correction officers and firemen in the congregation. I often thought of the irony of having police and criminals under the same roof, presumably praying to the same God.

At the same time we can look at our world and see all the problems. The Pandemic is still a threat to us. We can read daily in our newspapers about the crime and violence that is happening right here in the Bronx. And, more and more families are experiencing poverty because of the loss of em-ployment Sometimes we look out at what is going on and think that there is no hope at all.

That is where the deeper meaning of today’s gospel comes in. Our gospel reminds us that the good seed – the reign of God has been sown. Yes, sometimes it is hard to see it because of all the “weeds” we see around us. And, sometimes like the servant in today’s gospel we just want to gather the weeds and throw them out!

But, like the sower in today’s gospel we just have to say no to this idea. We have to let the weeds and wheat grow together and wait for them to be separated at the harvest time. Our gospel re-minds us that we should not judge others. Only God judges. And a Christian is called to live in an im-perfect world trying to make the reign of God (the wheat) present. Our responsibility is to build up the reign of God in the midst of the weeds. Our gospel should give us hope. Yes, our world is imper-fect and there are plenty of weeds out there. But, there is also wheat. The reign of God is present and was planted well before the weeds came along. We just have to have the eyes of faith to see it.

Our Parish Mission (Spanish) continues this week. It takes place from 7:30 – 8:30 each even-ing and you can connect to it through Zoom. Instruction on how to do so are on the parish website and in the bulletin.

We have small class sizes and a large facility which makes social dis-tancing in our school easier. We also offer a fine Catholic education that follows the guideliens of the Archdiocese of New York and New York State. If you are interested in enrolling your children, stop by the school during the day Monday – Friday from 8am to 1pm. There is still some financial aid available.

En nuestro evangelio de hoy, Jesús dice que el reino de los cielos se puede comparar con un hombre que sembró buena semilla en su campo. ¡Esperaba una gran cosecha! Pero mientras dormía, su enemigo vino y sembró malas hierbas entre el trigo, y se fue. El criado entonces quiso ir y arrancar todas las malezas. Pero, el maestro le dijo que no lo hiciera porque parte del trigo probablemente sería destruido en el proceso. Él le dice que deje que tanto la maleza como el trigo crezcan hasta el momento de la cosecha y que luego puedan recoger el trigo que queda y tirar las malas hierbas.

¿Qué tiene que ver todo esto con el Reino de Dios? Bueno, a primera vista, el significado parece sim-ple: los pecadores arderán en el infierno y los verdaderos creyentes irán al cielo. Sin embargo, sé que las pa-rábolas de Jesús siempre tienen un significado más profundo.

Cuando estaba en Trinidad, una señora se me acercó y me dijo que estaba molesta porque una de las personas que reconoció en la misa era una persona “mala” y pecaminosa. Al hablar con ella descubrí que su ex marido estaba en la misa. Ella dijo: "No se le debe permitir venir a la iglesia". Le dije que si no permitía-mos que los pecadores entraran a la misa, tendríamos una iglesia bastante vacía. Al hablar más con ella, ella comenzó a ver mi punto y llegó al punto en que tener a su ex esposo en la misa ya no la molestaba.

También recuerdo que cuando estaba por primera vez aquí en el Bronx miraba a la congregación en la misa española y veía narcotraficantes, hombres que engañaban a sus esposas, adolescentes que estaban en pandillas y personas que alguna vez fueron encarceladas. Las cosas estaban bastante mal a finales de los años ochenta. Al mismo tiempo, teníamos policías, oficiales de corrección y bomberos en la congregación. A menudo pensaba en la ironía de tener a la policía y los delincuentes bajo el mismo techo, presumiblemente rezando al mismo Dios.

Al mismo tiempo, podemos mirar nuestro mundo y ver todos los problemas. La pandemia sigue sien-do una amenaza para nosotros. Podemos leer diariamente en nuestros periódicos sobre el crimen y la violen-cia que está ocurriendo aquí en el Bronx. Y, cada vez más familias están experimentando la pobreza debido a la pérdida de empleo. A veces miramos lo que está sucediendo y pensamos que no hay ninguna esperanza.

Ahí es donde entra el significado más profundo del evangelio de hoy. Nuestro evangelio nos recuerda que la buena semilla: el reino de Dios se ha sembrado. Sí, a veces es difícil verlo debido a todas las "malezas" que vemos a nuestro alrededor. Y, a veces, como el siervo en el evangelio de hoy, ¡solo queremos recoger las malas hierbas y tirarlas!

Pero, como el sembrador en el evangelio de hoy, solo tenemos que decir no a esta idea. Tenemos que dejar que las malezas y el trigo crezcan juntos y esperar a que se separen en el momento de la cosecha. Nues-tro evangelio nos recuerda que no debemos juzgar a los demás. Solo Dios juzga. Y un cristiano está llamado a vivir en un mundo imperfecto tratando de hacer presente el reino de Dios (el trigo). Nuestra responsabili-dad es construir el reino de Dios en medio de las malas hierbas. Nuestro evangelio debería darnos esperanza. Sí, nuestro mundo es imperfecto y hay muchas malezas por ahí. Pero también hay trigo. El reino de Dios está presente y fue plantado mucho antes de que llegaran las malas hierbas. Solo tenemos que tener los ojos de la fe para verlo.
