Overview
• The Roman persecutions of Christians stopped when Emperor Constantine granted religious freedom to the Christians by signing a law known as the edict of Milan in A.D. 315

to openly believe and worship Jesus Christ• Many Christian buildings were
returned• Many churches were built• Liturgy was enriched and
became an elaborate celebration• Christianity was declared as the
official religion of the Roman Empire• Many joined the church
Shadows• Did not often have sufficient
instruction• Succumbed to various heresies• Weak Christian faith
Major Events• The early councils of the Church(Nicaea,325;Ephesus, 431; and
Chalcedon, 451) and the writings and homilies of the Fathers of the Church played a crucial role on establishing important doctrines on the person of Christ as responses to the confusion brought about by heresies of individuals or groups of Christian at that time.• At A.D. 382,the official list of inspired books of the Bible, known as
the Canon of the Sacred Scriptures, first came to being.• From A.D. 382-406, St. Jerome translated the Old(Hebrew) and
New(Greek) Testament into Latin.• St. Augustine of Hippo declared that it is only on the authority of the
Roman Catholic Church that accept any book of the Scripture.
