Beware of the wounded animal.This will be evident for both teams as two

former NSL rivals go toe to toe on Saturday.Sydney United 58 will be determined for a bounce back performance when they host Marconi Stallions at Sydney United Sports Centre on Saturday night.United 58 have had some impressive performances this season to lift them to fourth position on the table, but have also been let down by inconsistency.A loss to league leaders Sydney Olympic last round was their fifth defeat of the campaign and took their record to five wins, five losses and a draw.Their opponents this week, Marconi Stallions, were also on the wrong side of a losing scoreline going down 1-0 to Wollongong Wolves.Sydney United 58 has been without a head coach since the resignation of Jason Culina in April, while have also been without Panny Nikas for a few matches. Nikas made his return to action last week off the bench and the mercurial

playmaker will surely slip back into the starting lineup for this match.His addition is sure to create headaches for the Marconi defence while more is expected from their prized 2018 signing Patrick Antelmi who thus far has not been able to strike up a formidable partnership with striker Chris Payne.The Stallions on the other hand have battled injury this season and have struggled to name their strongest team.When fit, Mateo Poljak is the heart of the Marconi midfield and is the glue which holds the side together through the middle of the park. They are a much tougher side with the Asian Champions League winner in the line-up.Still, the club does boost a number of quality in their camp as a number of rival NPL NSW Men’s teams would love to have players such as Sean Rooney, Michael Beauchamp, Marko Jesic, James Andrew, Chris Nunes and keeper Nenad Vekic.These historic clubs have always played out hard fought contests and expect this fixture to be no different.

#NPLNSWMATCH REVIEWSSydney United 58 0 – Sydney Olympic 2 at Sydney United Sports Centre

NPL NSW Men’s competition leaders Sydney Olympic underlined their Premiership credentials with a commanding 2-0 victory over 10-man Sydney United 58 at Sydney United Sports Centre on Saturday evening.

Abbas Saad’s side entered the encounter riding the crest of an eight-match unbeaten run and extended their advantage at the top of the table after cruising to another three points in what was a heated clash with their fellow competition heavyweights at Edensor Park.

The damage was done in a sensational opening half cameo from the Blues who opened the scoring through Spanish star Alejandro Sanchez before Thomas Whiteside’s volley gave the visitors breathing space on the cusp of half time.

Peter Markovic’s dismissal early in the second half for an altercation with Sanchez ignited a savagely fought second half between the two former NSL rivals, and although the home side matched Olympic in the battle the visitors proved too streetwise and trotted to their ninth win of the season.

The result ensures the Blues will finish the first half of the regular season in pole position while opening up a 12-point gap over United 58 on the table.

Wollongong Wolves 1 – Marconi Stallions 0 at WIN Stadium

Wollongong Wolves have shaken off a luckless month of football to record a 1-0 win over Marconi Stallions at WIN Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The victory was the Wolves first in their last six attempts, coming courtesy of Yuzo Tashiro’s early header which proved to be the decider in what was a tense battle.

With more frugality in front of goal Tashiro may well have gone home with the match ball, yet the early header was enough to see them past Marconi who had Theo Kofinas dismissed late on for a second yellow card.

The match marked Luke Wilkshire’s first home game for the Wolves since 1997, with the former Socceroo slotting into a holding midfield role within a new-look 3-5-2 formation for Jacob Timpano’s side.

Both teams went into the clash missing key men with the industrious Nick Montgomery out with a rib injury for Wolves while the suspended Sean O’Connell was missing for Marconi.

The match featured a tense midfield battle throughout, occasionally opening up for flurries of chances at each end as both sides went in search of much needed points.

Sydney United 58 have their season back on track and are aiming for two wins on the

bounce for the arrival of Marconi Stallions in Edensor Park this Saturday evening.

The Reds snapped a six-match losing streak by defeating Sydney Olympic 3-1 last Saturday but know further improvement is required if United 58 are to contest for silverware this campaign.

United 58 will enter the clash with Marconi four points adrift of fifth-placed Wollongong Wolves and face an uphill battle over the course of the next 11 rounds to return among the competition heavyweights.

Their cause should be helped by the signing of former Rockdale striker Dimitrios Petratos, who netted a crucial goal on debut against Olympic last weekend. Prior to the victory over Olympic the Reds had scored just twice in five matches and will be hoping to rejuvenate their clinical edge in front of goal against Marconi, in which the likes of Petratos and Sam Perre should feature heavily.

The visiting Stallions are searching for a much-needed win knowing anything less could see Marconi drop into last place. Nahuel Arrarte’s side have lost six of their last seven fixtures and have failed to score in three of their last four.
