ANGELA How gratitude must flood our grieving hearts, As this amazing friend we now survey – An unpretentious girl, of many parts, Who touched with love all those who passed her way: For people, and for animals in need, There were no limits to her tender care, Because her every thought and word and deed Were undergirded by perpetual prayer ….. Ant then, when motor neuron took its toll, And wrought destruction of her mortal frame, Her shining spirit had a single goal, To glorify her Saviour’s sacred name – Lord Jesus – now her fettered soul is free, Alive, rejoicing in Eternity!

Dear Friends, Autumn is now definitely with us and as we head towards November, our minds turn once again towards Remembrance Sunday. At this time, we not only remember those who have lost their lives in the service of their country, but we also bring to mind our loved ones who are no longer with us.

At 3.30pm on November 3rd at St. John’s Church Kingsdown we will be holding our Benefice Memorial Service. It is a time to remember and give thanks for those we have loved and who are no longer with us. Everyone is warmly invited to attend and if you would like to have the name of a loved one remembered during the service, please write their name on one of the sheets at the back of the churches. When someone we love dies, we can often feel as though we have been totally abandoned, not only by our friends and neighbours – who sometimes just don’t know what to say in such circumstances, usually because they don’t want to “upset” the bereaved person - but we can also feel that our loving God has also abandoned and forgotten about us as well – once again adding more hurt to our loss and grieving. For anyone who may feel alone at this time, I hope and pray that the following poem may help to bring just a glimpse of God’s light into your life: Footprints One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it: "LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me." The LORD replied: "My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you." Even though we may think that God has abandoned us, he is always there looking after us – and perhaps more often than not, carrying us, without us even realising it. Yours in Christ Cathy

Update on Fund Raising for New War Memorial in St John’s, Kingsdown Since our appeal for donations in last month’s Rural Roundup, we have been given several generous gifts of money for the new memorial. A quarter of the amount needed has been pledged, for which we are most grateful. Now we need a further push to raise the rest, so do please keep this important project in mind. If you have any fund raising ideas, please let one of us know, thank you. A reminder of the project: Many of you will have known Squadron Leader Anthony Downing RAF and his family; next year, 2014, is the centenary of the start of the First World War, so this seems to be a suitable time to add his name to the War Memorial in Kingsdown Church as he lost his life as a result of the conflict in Afghanistan. There is no space on the War Memorial to add the names of those killed in more recent conflicts so we would like to add something suitable in stone adjacent to the existing one with appropriate lettering. For further information, please contact:- Liz Sharp on 01304 449 459 [email protected] or Jackie Collins on 01304 367 892 [email protected]

Kingsdown PCC 100 Club

There have been 13 winners since May namely:

Bob Wiseman Rita Ross Honor Elliott (2) Leisha McKenchnie Lisa Holden Liz Sharp

James Brabazon Ian Perriam (2) Sue Martin Pat Clarke Elizabeth Monk Elizabeth Dobby Robin Mulhern

Anyone wishing to join should contact the Club administrator, David

As we move into November, this article gives me the opportunity to reflect on a very busy first term at Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP School. The school held its Harvest Festival last week led by Rev Cathy Sigrist. This service is not only an opportunity for the children to say ’Thank you’ for God’s gifts, but give something back to the community. For the second year running our Harvest Gifts were

donated to The Deal Food bank, an extremely worthwhile charity which supports families in Deal who have hit hard times. The Harvest gifts filled the front of the hall, creating a beautiful display. Thanks to everyone for their contributions. The Government has given funding to all schools in the United Kingdom for the next two years, with the aim of improving the quality of Sports provision. Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP School will be using this funding with the aims of: Improving the quality of Teaching and learning in Sports, and Widening the range of Sports our children can access I look forward to letting you know how the school progresses against these targets. Our football teams (both girls and boys) have already started their sporting seasons..The Girls played their opening match against Deal Parochial, with the A Team drawing and B team losing, and the boys lost out in extra time in the final of

a tournament held at Northbourne Park. Jo Hygate

David Whittington from Dover District Council gave a presentation to the Parish Council

and members of the public on Neighbourhood Planning. The presentation was informative

and helpful to Councillors who are going to meet to discuss the option of setting up a

Neighbourhood Plan before reaching a decision at the next Full Council meeting.

It has been noted that work has began on Kingsdown’s Sea Defences, which delighted

members of the public and Councillors.

Following on from Mrs Hough’s letter that was published in September’s issue of Rural

Roundup, regarding the hazardous ‘Arnold’s Alley ‘(otherwise known as footpath ER4) the

Parish Council have contacted Kent County Council, who again stated the footpath was not a

priority. Therefore the Parish Council have decided to fund the project themselves and are

now waiting for a written proposal from Kent County Council so this work can begin.

The toilets in Undercliffe Road have been closed by Dover District Council for the winter,

however the police, the PCSO and Community Warden will be monitoring anti social

behaviour around the toilets throughout the winter months.

The next monthly meeting of Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council takes place on

Monday 11 November 2013 at Kingsdown Village Hall.

Following the resignation of Cllr Paice, Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council now

have a vacancy for a new Councillor. If you are interested in this position please contact the

Clerk on the above details for more information.

From the editor Hello All, I am always saying where has the time gone, and where has it gone?” Next month will be a dual issue covering events etc. for December and January, therefore copy for both months would be appreciated. I am so delighted to report, that in response to my plea for help in last month’s magazine, I have had a favourable reply offering help from a couple, Mr & Mrs Wall, who are shortly moving to Kingsdown and have been joint editors for their local newsletter and involved with

the community activities for many years. I have met them on one of their brief visits to Kingsdown and am really looking forward to working with them when they have settled in. All the sunflowers have finished blooming now and the only two people who contacted me with flowers that were over ten foot tall were from Kingsdown. . Congratulations to Pat Godden and unfortunately, very remiss of me, I have mislaid the name of the lady who phoned on behalf of her partner in Church Cliff. Please contact me to claim the small prize. Doreen Clark

SECRETARY :- Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Meetings are held at 2.00pm on the second Monday of each month (except Aug) at Kingsdown Village Hall, Upper Street or Ringwould Village Hall, Dover Road.

We welcomed two new members to the Annual Meeting in October; our membership has now reached 61! Doreen Clark began the meeting with a demonstration of how to make a Victoria Sandwich. As an official judge at Shows, Doreen told us what was expected in a perfect cake....well, as soon as she said there must be no cooling rack marks or crumbly edges, I knew I was doomed for failure....and I suspect I wasn't the only one with similar thoughts! Doreen, of course, whipped up a sponge with the greatest of ease, and produced no less than four others she had made earlier, so that everyone could enjoy a piece with their cup of tea. It was delicious! We then got down to business! The present committee was willing to serve another year, and members voted for Elizabeth Bembridge to continue to be our president. There are several social events coming soon.. We shall have been to see Alan Bennett's play 'People' by the time this magazine goes to press. There is a Christmas lunch at the Golf Club, Christmas Carols at St Saviour's, and an evening at Lakeland Kitchen Shop in Canterbury.Next month Gaye Waters will talk to us about Riding for the Disabled at Ringwould Village Hall at 2pm on 11th November.

Do come along. Christine Smith

Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in November:- 15th Sue

Gregory & Jo Hazell, 17th Joan Vonk, 18th Doreen Robertson, 27th

Margaret Perriam,.

I wonder how many of you have started to put your gardens to bed for the winter? After our September meeting I was talking to Susan Scrivens who had given the members an illustrated talk on Wayside Plants. She informed me that she and her husband were being very

drastic with their lovely garden in Pedlinge – cutting back and chopping down overgrown shrubs and trees hoping to rejuvenate everything that had been in for years and had taken over. Well, I have done the same; the garden, for what it is worth, looks twice its size and I have discovered plants that had been buried underneath more robust neighbours. It was great fun! The satisfaction of making these discoveries was fun but not such fun getting rid of all the green bags I had filled. All I have to do now is to try and dig out all the Soapwort that is rampaging through the front flower beds. It may look lovely and give off a wonderful scent but it is a first class thug and I really wish that I had never fallen for its beauty. Last month I wrote about this year's harvest of Chillies and thought you would like to know that I freeze them straight from the plant, take them out frozen and cut them up with a pair of scissors without thawing them. But please still remember not to rub your nose or eyes!! Keep warm whilst gardening now that the weather is turning. Susan Martin - Chairman

Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting. 1. Councillor Graham Smith asked the visitors at the meeting if there was a parishioner who would volunteer to become a trustee to the John Foche and Cushire Charity. Ideally the new trustee would need to be quite knowledgeable of residents living in Sutton Parish. The charity gives a small gift at Christmas time, of a box of groceries, to widows and widowers in the parish. The trustees usually meet once a year in November. If you would be interested please contact Veronica Harrop on: 01304 375 142 2. Vfast were unable to install a ‘hot spot’ in the Church Hall in Studdal as the signal was poor. Vfast are to look into the problem. 3. It was asked if Roman Road could be swept by Dover District Council as the mud silt at the sides of the road narrow the width of the road considerably. The Parish Clerk will contact DDC and ask for this to be done. 4. Councillor Ron Little, who oversees the allotments in Ashley, said that he would buy six stakes and stake holders for the fruit trees in the allotment or-chard. The trees are in need of some support from prevailing winds. 5. The Chairman, Simon Butcher, praised Colin Stokes for the work he had done in keeping the grass cut and tidy in the Memorial Garden, Playing Field and Picnic area. Colin is to check the BMX track as it had become rough in places. Our next Parish meeting will be held on Tuesday 5th November at 7.30pm in Studdal Church Hall. Everyone is welcome. Veronica Harrop - Parish Clerk

Let’s be Sociable We are a very friendly group that meet from 10.30 ‘til 11.45am on the third Tuesday of every month, usually in the Church Hall, Downs Rd, Studdal. There is always a Bring and Buy stall, with home-made jams and local grown vegetables etc. and a Raffle. So come for a chat and a hot drink. Everyone is welcome and all the proceeds go to charities.

Scones and Clotted Cream.

Of the many delights during this marvellous summer, the greatest pleasure has been going for

cream teas with our teenage grandchildren. One particular venue stands out which, short listed for a prestigious award, is an excellent local tea-room with lighthouse. We recommend you make a visit to the South Foreland Lighthouse. After you have climbed to the top, recovered

from the breath taking views and bracing air, go to Mrs Knott’s Tearoom in the former lighthouse keeper’s cottage where once again you will step back in time.

The National Trust is custodian of the South Foreland Lighthouse and their local representative

Janet Alcock came to speak at a meeting organised by Kingsdown Conservation Group. We were guided through the history of both the upper and lower lighthouses and with the aid of photographs shown the mechanisms that contribute to the working of the lantern. The NT now

owns all the cliff-top strip of land from the lighthouse to Dover harbour. The latest acquisition is being managed to return it to the chalk grassland of before the War and it is hoped it will

become the habitat of rare orchids and other plants as well as insects and birds. Before the talk, wine and nibbles were on offer but sadly no scones and clotted cream! Mary Lord

Letter from Cornwall Birthday Girl

It was August. High summer 2013 and a beautiful day in Cornwall. Blue sky, what cloud there was high and fleeting. Bees everywhere. The slightest breeze. The unfailing sea breeze of the peninsula. Can it be true that in Cornwall one is never further than twenty three miles from the sea?

Time is getting on. I am standing at the kitchen sink washing up. I can’t resist soaking up the view in front of me, across the fields to the far side of the valley. A movement at the periphery of my vision and I notice the first bird. The buzzard is wheeling gently with wings outstretched – the tips splayed in the wind. It circles lazily with a `not a care in the world’ air about it. I see a second bird nearby – its mate? They are soon cir-cling together and gaining height as they drift slowly away towards the cutting that shields the railway line to St Ives and Penzance. Then I see it. A third buzzard is in view – their chick? I am now captivated as I watch all three birds soar ever higher, moving further away all the time. I am enthralled as they wheel away and fade to become simply dots in the distance. They have soon gone over the horizon. The washing up is forgotten!

It’s late now. Almost midday. Jane is home from town – and her hair-do. Immersed now in the laundry – a favourite activity. She calls out. `Look in the garden’. Her call is sharp and I’m intrigued. Our back garden at this point is little more than a ransom strip of a few yards width. I search the flower border and shingle path with interest and spot a perky brown bird, straight necked and tall and – I fancy – with incipient wattles at the throat. A young male pheasant, unsure and wary of the two humans now looking on from the raised decking above it. We have spooked it, unsurprisingly. A disturbance nearby in the flower border and mum appears. Brown and beautiful and assured, stepping jerkily forward protectively towards her chick. They join forces and as I try to fade discreetly into the nearby shed to find some bird food pellets they move off, too apprehensive to await my treat.

Just another day in our few square yards of Cornwall.

And the birthday? If Kent now seems far away to us then grand- daughter number three in New Zealand might as well be on the moon. Nineteen that day and at university. She has her challenges. She will have more. But how I wish that on that special day I was giving her a hug, hearing about her life, and sharing my day’s experience with her. Tony Burt
