October is the Month of the Holy Rosary Rosary Procession on Saturdays

On the first Saturday of every month, St. Justin Martyr Church has a Rosary Procession in honor of Our Lady of Fatima. During October, the month of the Holy Rosary, our Legion of Mary will be having the Rosary Procession every Saturday (after the 8:30am Mass) through-out the month of October. Everyone is welcome to join.

Support our Pennies from Heaven fundraiser The Catholic Church celebrates RESPECT LIFE MONTH every

October. We are all called to Protect all Human Life from conception to natural death. Mothers who are pregnant and not prepared need our prayers and assistance.

Pennies from Heaven is an annual collection to support the groups and facilities in our Diocese that assist women and families in their need. Last weekend we gave out empty baby bottles and asked you to return them this week filled with donations. Please drop off your dona-tions, whether in a bottle or not, into the baskets that are near the altar today.

World Mission Sunday collection next weekend On October 17-18 we will celebrate World Mission Sunday.

This year we are invited to support the 1,150 of the youngest dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe.

Pope Francis says, “Mission is part of the ‘grammar’ of faith, something essential for those who listen to the voice of the Spirit who whispers ‘Come’ and ‘Go forth.’ Those who follow Christ cannot fail to be missionaries…” Celebrating World Mission Sunday provides us with the opportunity to learn and practice this “grammar of faith” in solidarity with the Church in service to our poor and marginalized sisters and brothers worldwide.

Please keep the Missions in your prayers and donate to the collec-tion for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. We will not be hav-ing a separate second collection for this. If you choose to donate, please put your gift in one of the designated envelopes and place in in the bas-ket along with your Sunday donation.

Living Rosary on October 21 In honor of our Mother Mary, the Lady of the Rosary, we will be having our annual Living Rosary on Wednesday, October 21 at 6 p.m. in St. Justin Martyr Church. A large statue of Our Lady of Fatima, bor-rowed from Sacred Heart Mission, will be present for the evening. Immediately fol-lowing the Rosary will be a Mass, pre-sided by Fr. Domingo Romero. Both the Rosary and the Mass will be bilingual. Be-cause of the Rosary we will not be having our regularly scheduled 6 p.m. Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Also the 7 p.m. Spanish Mass at Sacred Heart Mission has been cancelled. We invite everyone to the bilingual Mass at St. Justin’s.

Discipleship and Wealth Sometimes we get the idea that having material

wealth is a bad thing. We may convince ourselves that it is the poor who are favored. In today's readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gifts more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that matters most.

Today's scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God's gifts in our lives. Treasures from our Tradition How did the church dealt with "daily sins" in the

first five centuries? As devout and observant as they were, our early fathers and mothers in faith could not have been all that different from us. Maybe they looked the other way when the grocer threw an extra fig in the shopping basket, or had a wandering eye for the widow next door, or had a taste for too much ale, or didn't let the truth get in the way of a good story. First of all, there was the Eucharist. The words are familiar: "This is the cup of my blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sin." Especially by participating in Communion from the cup, forgiveness was achieved. Eucharist was, and remains, the sacrament of recon-ciliation par excellence, the sign and source of unity with Christ.

There were other helps along the way: "fraternal" correction, or the course corrections we offer one an-other in love, prayer, fasting, works of mercy. St. Augustine listed endurance of suffering, forgiveness of insults, and added the praying of the Lord's Prayer in the liturgy. He felt that the public praying of the Our Father on Sunday and its daily use in private prayer was an essential remedy and the reason why everyone was not a candidate for canonical penance. Inherited from Augustine's practice, the Lord's Prayer in our Communion Rite still has the same purpose, preparing us for receiving and becoming the Body of Christ. --Rev. Donate your recyclables for our St. Vincent DePaul Save your aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles.

Deacon Ray Duthoy is collecting aluminum cans, glass beverage bottles, and plastic water bottles which he turns in to the recycling center. Money col-lected is then given to our parish’s St. Vincent DePaul Society. Cans and bot-tles can be placed in a bag together and Deacon Ray will sort as needed. You can drop them off at Deacon Ray’s house, by the parish garage, or call Deacon Ray to arrange for a pick up, at 714-772-6534.

Used postage stamps needed... DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN Deacon Ray Duthoy is collecting used postage stamps, BOTH FOREIGN

AND DOMESTIC. Domestic stamps should be the commemorative or col-lectible ones only. The stamps will be sent to a group of sisters in Minnesota, who process them, with the proceeds benefitting their Missions in South Amer-ica. Stamps can be placed in an envelope marked “Stamps for Deacon Ray” and placed in the Sunday collection basket or brought to the Parish Office.

Reflexiones para la Homilía ¿Qué es totalmente importante para nosotros? La mayoría responderíamos que

nuestros hijos, nuestra familia. Quizá el consejo de vender todo lo que tenemos para dárselo a los pobres no nos resulte ni tan factible ni tan desafiante. Muchos de noso-tros tenemos poco dinero y pocas posesiones y valoramos mucho más la familia y la amistad. Como el joven, también nosotros buscamos saber cuál es el mejor camino para llegar a Dios.

La palabra es cortante y desafiante, nos dice la segunda lectura de hoy. ¿En qué nos puede desairar a nosotros la Palabra? Quizá no tengamos muchas posesiones, pero a lo mejor nos aferramos a opiniones, a juicios sobre otras personas, a actitudes duras contra algunos que, o no nos caen bien o nos han hecho daño. Quizá nuestro tesoro, el que tengamos que vender, sea nuestro propio deseo de control y de mandar. Puede ser una incapacidad o falta de voluntad de perdonar a alguien, o quizá una actitud de machismo que considera menor a la mujer.

Cada cual tendrá que ver dentro de sí cuáles son esos tesoros que tanto guarda-mos aunque, si venimos a ver no son ni siquiera valiosos y pueden incluso hacernos daño. Puede ser un sentimiento de negatividad, de crítica de todo lo que hay a mí alrededor; o puede ser, en el otro extremo, una aceptación de la injusticia a mí alrede-dor sin preocuparme por luchar contra ella. Muchas veces tenemos tesoros ocultos de lo que ni siquiera somos muy conscientes. Queremos alcanzar a Dios, pero no quere-mos abandonar esas posiciones que hemos tomado con tanta firmeza y a veces casi sin darnos cuenta. Ve y vende todo eso, nos dice Dios, y ponte a disposición de los demás, al servicio de los demás. Supone una generosidad enorme, que va mucho más allá del dinero. Jesús invita a hacer eso mirándonos con amor.

Hay otra lectura de este evangelio que también nos desafía. A veces nos lamen-tamos de que hay pocos sacerdotes y ministros que hablen nuestro idioma y nos com-prendan, pero nos resistimos a pensar que en nuestra propia familia, o quizá nosotros mismos, haya una llamada al sacerdocio… Señor, envía sacerdotes de otra familia, es posible que recemos incluso sin darnos cuenta de lo que sentimos; pero cuando Dios llama, cuando nos mira con amor, puede ser que sea irresistible. Después de todo, su Palabra es como espada y nada se le oculta.

Para la reflexión: ¿En qué momentos has tratado de escaparte de la llamada de Dios? ¿Se te hizo esa llamada irresistible? ¿Qué satisfacciones y alegrías sentiste cuando la seguiste?

Reflexiones sobre la Palabra Ve y vende todo

Sabiduría 7:7-11 Se personifica la sabiduría como mujer y esto ha dado paso a diversas interpretaciones. Algunos opi-nan que la Sabiduría es una recreación de una diosa antigua; otros mantienen que es simplemente una forma femenina para la palabra hebrea que significa sabiduría; y hay otros que interpretan que, si en una sociedad machista se exalta a una figura femenina con tanto énfasis, debe significar que la sabiduría es algo extraordinario. El rey que pide la sabiduría en este pasaje la considera tan enorme, que comparadas con ella, todas las riquezas de este mundo palidecen. La sabiduría en la Biblia se puede considerar bajo diversos prismas: como sabiduría práctica, es decir, prudencia; como sabiduría teológica, es decir, el conocimiento de Dios; y como sabiduría cósmica, como conocimiento de los secretos del universo y de la vida. Esta última sabiduría sabe bien que la mente sola no puede alcanzar todos esos secretos y que una sabiduría así es un regalo de Dios. Hebreos 4:12-13 Este brevísimo pasaje está lleno de teología. Dios se identifica con su palabra y es una palabra eficaz, poderosa y cortante. La Palabra de Dios lo conoce todo y nada se le oculta. Por esa palabra se creó todo. Todo está expuesto a Dios y nada se le oculta. Marcos 10:17-30 El joven que se acerca a Jesús parece convencido de que puede hacer algo para ganar la vida eterna. Esta pregunta siempre ha estado presente entre la gente. ¿es algo que se consiga por propio mérito y esfuerzo o es regalo de Dios? en el Antiguo Testamento, los bienes y las riquezas se consideraban señal del favor de Dios, como premio a una vida según la ley. en cierto modo, junto con las riquezas, parecía mere-cerse el favor y la bendición de Dios. el que Jesús le diga al joven que deje precisamente todo lo que es señal de su predestinación, parece una contradic-ción. Parece que lo que Jesús quiere decir con esto es que la salvación no está en la mano de los seres humanos, sino que depende simplemente de la bon-dad y el favor de Dios. Haciendo eco de la primera lectura de la Sabiduría, se dice que hay cosas infini-tamente más importantes que los bienes materiales. Nuestra cultura Venimos a este país con el sueño y el deseo de con-seguir una vida mejor para nuestras familias. A ve-ces, en el esfuerzo por conseguir esos sueños tan legítimos, hay inmigrantes que se aferran mucho a las posesiones materiales; o se sueña con darles a los hijos todo lo que nosotros no hemos tenido y se los malcría y consiente demasiado. Con todo, general-mente dentro de la comunidad hispana se valoran mucho más las relaciones y la comunidad que las posesiones materiales. Existe, por tanto, un sentido de la generosidad más fuerte y arraigado. Quienes están un poco mejor recuerdan las estrecheces que pasaron y se solidarizan con otros. Incluso quienes pasan más trabajo siempre saben compartir con alegría lo poco que tienen.

Retos del rol de padres en la actualidad Con frecuencia escuchamos y leemos que hoy día hay más decadencia y perver-

sión que en el pasado, pues es fácil desviarse del camino de los valores y la fe. Uno de esos desvíos se aprecia en el hecho de que muchos nos encerramos en burbujas que cada vez nos aíslan más de un mundo que es de naturaleza social y fraterna; pero que, con el pasar del tiempo, tristemente, nos está tornando más individualistas y ermitaños, aunque estemos rodeados de personas.

La vorágine de los avances tecnológicos y las nuevas corrientes de comunica-ción por internet, a la misma vez que nos conecta más con el mundo, nos aleja del núcleo de la sociedad en la que vivimos. Esto hace que nos volvamos individualistas y egocentristas, huraños y autodependientes, pero menos humanos.

Para muchos jóvenes hoy, sus padres son los celulares y las computadoras, y el lazo consanguíneo es la internet; sus hermanos son los videojuegos y las amistades en el ciberespacio, muchas que de las cuales no conocen ni conocerán nunca.

Ayer, la familia estaba bien definida, nuestro centro era la casa grande y todos nos saludábamos y apoyábamos. Los puntos de encuentro eran el comedor o la sala. Continuara………..
