UNITY IN THE BODY OF CHRIST

THE ULTIMATE EXPRESSION OF UNITY for humanity is the reception of the body and blood of Christ. In the Sacrament of Holy Communion, we participate fully in union with the Trinity by receiving Jesus Christ. The period of Theophany is when God reveals Himself to us—all the borders and the races. Theophany transcends all the bounds of separation of humanity to the Divinity. We are at the revelation of God’s trinity not only to be observers of unity, but are called to be participants of God’s love by our worship and faith.

I wanted to share some good news with you. On November 30, 2014, His All Ho-liness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and His Holiness Pope Francis met togeth-er at the Patriarchate in Constantinople to declare and renew their pledge to bring the Church into unity. Their expression of respect starts with their wonderful quote, “Our remembrance of the Apostles, who proclaimed the good news of the Gospel to the world through their preaching and their witness of martyrdom, strengthens in us the aspiration to continue to walk together in order to overcome, in love and in truth, the obstacles that divide us.” In the Divine Liturgy, we pray this request to our Lord, “Let us love one another that with one mind we may confess.” The recitation of the Creed is next. We clare to the world that we believe in “one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.” The psalmist says it all, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity” (Psalms 133:1). I would like for you to go to the website of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, www.patriarchate.org, and read the declara-tion for yourself.

Today we are all concerned with radicalism, where we see Christians and non-Christians martyred by the Muslim extremists. In our own country, people are called to protest events that are not true to course—separation and disharmony in our own nation. I remember the wonderful words of our President Obama, “We are not sepa-rate states but united states.”

On December 10-11, I was invited to be a participant in the URBI ET ORBI foun-dation which sponsors unity of Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christians. In my per-sonal reflections on unity, I was mindful of Saint Paul’s words in his letter to the Ephesians, “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuf-fering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:1-3). I was able to offer, to our brothers, that even though the complete expression of true unity will be in the Eucharist, we can still work together in the commitment to fulfill the Gospel by sharing in the works of the Church. We, at Saint Katherine, work together with our neighbors at the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anthony to support the homeless shelter, keep the Culmore Clinic open, and provide food for the food bank.

THE GREAT ENEMY OF INVOLVEMENT is procrastination. “Tomorrow” never seems to come for those who rationalize they’ll get involved “soon” or when they have “more time.” Of course, the only problem with such a thought process is the sobering axiom that “time waits for no man.” Indeed, the inexorable march of time also brings to mind another profound statement about life in general, “It’s not how much time you have, but what you do with the time God grants you.” In the context of our community, while blessed with many volunteers, more than a few examples sadly abound that lend credence to my expressions of concern regarding volunteerism in general. In spite of a “hard core” group of volunteers whose faces seem to pop up frequently at each church event, it is note-worthy that others remain conspicuous by their absence. This condition need not exist, especially in a community such as ours that is blessed with such an abundance of ministries and opportunities for in-volvement for parishioners of all ages. My purpose for bringing this to your attention is not to dwell on the negative, but rather to reemphasize the multiple opportunities for involvement in our community. To that end, the beginning of each New Year affords us all the opportunity for reflection, rededication, and renewal. I pray this article serves as a clarion call to all those who read these words to rededicate yourselves to our community. As we all con-template the year ahead, our families and loved ones, our faith and community, I encourage everyone to make a New Year’s resolution to become more involved and contribute your time and talents—as well as your treasures—in consideration of the needs of our community. I can assure you the benefits to our be-loved community of Saint Katherine will be secondary to the personal and spiritual fulfillment each of you will surely realize through your efforts. We are all profoundly grateful to those within our community who continue to give of themselves and further participate in the life of the Church through our diverse ministries and in their Stewardship of our parish. It is through your efforts we thrive. I encourage everyone to follow this example and “step up” your commitment to our parish and consider the many opportunities for participation in the life of our church. I was at church putting the finishing touches on this article, having just completed the final paragraph above. As God is my witness, I had just finished typing the last few words when I noticed a gentleman standing in my doorway. I invited him to come in and sit down and asked if he needed assistance. His first words were “I’m new to the area and I’ve been looking for a parish . . . I’m lost without my Church and I’d like to get involved.” This was hardly serendipitous, it was a true blessing and gift from God and it was a joy to spend time welcoming our newest parishioner! I can only interpret this visit as God’s message to all of us reinforcing His invitation to everyone to grow and experience spiritual and personal fulfillment by more fully participating in the life and activities of our Church. Please take this story to heart as your consider how you can become further involved in our community. On behalf of our Parish Council, I wish you all a Happy and INVOLVED New Year! Your servant in Christ,

FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT

HOW DID WOMEN PARTICIPATE in shaping the institutions and patterns of life characteristic of early Christianity? We can appreciate the variety of female roles, and their im-portance within the rapidly-changing church of the first four centuries, if we read carefully the primary sources, in Greek and Latin that record their actions. These sources, too, must be read in their ancient context, in order to un-derstand how the wider, non-Christian world both limited and permitted various kinds of activities that flourished in antiquity, even if they disappeared in the medieval West and post-Islamic East.

Although most women did not occupy public roles in the ancient world, they took crucially important roles in the spread of the Gospel in the Hellenistic-Jewish Diaspora, and beyond, to the pagan world: in addition to the work of women mentioned in the New Testament, the activities ascribed to the Greek-speaking St. Thekla “isapostolos” in the second and third century, and her great following in later centuries, particularly in Asia Minior, exemplify the missionary activities of women – many of whose names we no longer know. Women had prophetic roles consider the Passion of St. Perpetua and her companion Felicity in Car-thage, in a bi-lingual community; Perpetua’s prison diary is one of the few books written by, instead of about, wom-en in the early church. Perpetua could both see the future and intercede while in prison for the salvation of her younger brother her Passion was quickly translated into Greek and circulated widely in the Mediterranean.

Egeria, the pilgrim nun in Egypt and the Holy Land, is another example of women’s activities. In the late fourth century, she used her funds to search out famous biblical and Christian sites, travelling from Galicia to Egypt, Pal-estine, Syria and Constantinople to gather information about the scriptures, the liturgy, and the Christian past including a side-trip to the great Syrian city of Edessa (now Urfa). And like Perpetua, she recorded her travels in a diary evidence of the scholarly training and abilities of women who, with sufficient funding, were able to travel independently as ascetics and researchers.

The fourth century also saw the establishment of monas-tic study-centers where female philosophers, like the great Melania the Elder, used her wealth to sponsor biblical exe-gesis, translation projects, and the establishment of a lit-erate female community on the Mount of Olives in Jerusa-lem. Like other scholarly women of the time, she was flu-ent in Greek as well, and corresponded with the monks of Egypt as the intellectual monastic life was being estab-lished there. Her granddaughter, St. Melania the Younger, moved to the East thanks to Melania’s prodding, and con-tinued the tradition of learned ascetic women. An even clearer example is St. Makrina, older sister of Sts. Basil and Gregory of Nyssa evidently trained in philosophy and

ELLINIKO ARCHEIA DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY, if you want to go to the movies, there will be some interesting things going on at the Goethe Institute in DC, namely a series of films called Discovering Georgian Cinema, organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and coming here thanks to the National Gallery of Art. In all, there are nine films from directors both classic and modern. There will also be a photographic exhibition by the well known German pho-tographer Barbara Klemm, titled Photographs from Tbilisi in 1991, opening after the first film called Blue Mountains on January 12.

If, on the other hand, you prefer not to brave the ele-ments and stay inside, your interest in some incredibly interesting Greek subjects can be found on your computer at a site which has a veritable mine of amazing articles about Greece. This site is called Elliniko Archeio. There you can read articles on History, Philosophy, Politics, Mythology as well as watch Greek and French documen-taries and travel back to Ancient Greece.

One of these documentaries is so compelling and so in-spiring that anyone who watches it would be proud to be Greek. It is called La Legende des Sciences (Birth), writ-ten and narrated by French philosopher, Michel Serrer. The beauty of the images in this documentary are astound-ing. The way in which the explanation and influence of each achievement in each field are linked and the true ex-tent of the achievement of the Ancient Greeks is made clear at each stage. But this is only one at this site. It’s at: www.ellinikoarxeio.com.

This French documentary is at www.ellinikoarxeio.com/ 2013/02/la-legende-des-sciences.

(continued from previous column) exegesis, she turned her family’s villa in Pontus into a monastic establishment. Gregory of Nyssa portrays her as a new Socrates, conducting a philosophical dialogue with him that is actually modeled on Aristotle’s On the Soul; in a biography, he celebrated her life as a philosopher.

Other examples of female scholarship and devotion would include the empresses St. Helena and Eudoxia in the fourth and fifth centuries, or additional examples of ascetic women thinkers. Although public roles were confined to imperial women, and female authorship was rare, these ancient women laid the groundwork for a longer tradition of female scholarship and devotion in the church.

Dr. Robin Young, a professor at Catholic University of America D.C., was the speaker at the inaugural lecture at HEC on Tuesday, December 2, 2014.

pate in sacraments in any non-Orthodox church. This is also the case when we have sacraments in the Orthodox Church— godparents and sponsors (koumbaroi) in the sacraments must be Orthodox Christians.

May our churches continue to trust in Christ our Saviour that we be untiring witnesses to the love of God. May our Lord, by our fervent prayers, grant the gift of peace in love and unity to the entire human family.

Let us come together at liturgy every week and pray that the new year 2015 be a year of unity—starting first with our-selves and then throughout the world.

Have a blessed New Year,

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH by Dr. John Demakis Our Kenya Missionary Returns. Mary VanMullekom re-cently returned from a short-term mission to Nairobi, Ken-ya with the OCMC. Mary and her fellow missionaries taught English and offered conversational experiences with students in Orthodox schools of higher education in Kenya, including the Makarios Orthodox Seminary and the St. Clement of Alexandria Orthodox Teachers College. She shared her experiences with our Missions and Outreach Committee at our meeting on December 9th. She called this a life-changing experience. Mary will make a PowerPoint presentation after one of our Heretismoi services in March so that our entire community can learn about her experienc-es in Kenya.

OCMC Teams for 2015. Twelve teams have been set by the OCMC for 2015. Most teams serve 2-3 weeks. A team may be a teaching team, a building team, a youth team, or health care team. A complete list can be found on our church’s website. Please prayerfully consider going on a short-term mission team. Our entire community will be supportive. For further information, contact Dr. John De-makis at [email protected]

Second Cuba Mission Trip Dates Set. Fr. Costa has an-nounced that the dates for the 2015 Cuba mission trip will be April 30-May 8. From our experience last year, this trip will fill up quickly. So, if interested, please call Fr. Costa for details and to sign up.

Project Mexico Dates Announced. Fr. Panagioti has con-firmed that the dates for the 2015 Project Mexico trip will be August 13-19. The team will stay at the St. Innocence Orthodox Orphanage near Tijuana, Mexico. Work may include helping to build a small home for the needy or working at the Orphanage. There are 10 slots available. Please contact Fr. Panagioti to sign up.

OCMC Benefit Dinner. Our 2015 OCMC benefit dinner will be held on April 26 and will feature Rev. John Chakos who is our long-term missionary in Guatemala. Fr. Chakos had served for many years in Pittsburgh, but now he and his wife are working with the new Orthodox Church in Guatemala. His topic will be Orthodox in the Guatemalan Highlands: A Light Shines Brightly. He will share with us the exciting events occurring in Guatemala as thousands are converting to Orthodoxy. Learn how the Church is minis-tering to them. Save the date! In the next issue of DOXA, we will have ticket information.

Monumental Mission Walk 2015. Eleni Porter, Chair, and her committee will be planning the Monumental Mis-sion Walk for 2015. The dates must be assigned by the Na-tional Park Service. However, we are requesting a Saturday in September or October. We hope to announce the dates and other details in DOXA very soon.

Diaper Drive a Success. Diapers were collected on Sun-day, December 7 and distributed to three local food pan-tries. Thanks to all who contributed. Our next Diaper Drive will be Palm Sunday, April 5, 2015.

Food Collection Dates Set. We will again be collecting food for our local food pantry on Sundays, February 22 and Sunday, May 17. As usual, we will distribute our own blue cloth collection bags the two Sundays before each collection date. Please bring the food in the cloth bags on the collec-tion dates only. We have collected more than 1,000 pounds of food at every collection thus far. At our last collection, we surpassed 1,200 pound mark. Let’s keep up the good work!

HOMELESS SHELTER

Hygiene and Survival Kits. On Sunday December 21, our Catechetical (Sunday) School children helped put together over 250 Hygiene and Survival kits for the Bailey’s Cross-roads homeless shelter. The kits included warm caps, ther-mal socks, hand warmers, gloves, shaving cream and ra-zors, shampoo, conditioner, power bars, chap sticks, etc. The items were donated by various Saint Katherine organi-zations including, Adult Bible Class, AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, GOYA, Philoptochos, Sunday School, and sever-al individuals. These kits are necessary because, in the win-ter months, there are not enough beds available for those who need them. Those they cannot accommodate are given a hot meal and sent out with a Hygiene and Survival kit. Thanks to all who participated.

Serving Dinner at the Shelter. On January 13, our GOYA will purchase and prepare dinner items and then serve the meal at two seatings. In February, our Missions Committee will serve dinner and, in March or April, our Daughters will serve dinner. If your organization would like to partici-pate, please contact Dr. John Demakis at 703-319-1610 or [email protected].

Clothes and Toiletries for the Shelter. During these win-ter months, warm clothes are always necessary. Please be generous and bring new or clean used clothing and uno-pened toiletries to the foyer of our Meletis Charuhas Com-munity Center.

HAPPY 10TH ANNIVERSARY! On Wednesday night, January 12, 2005 we had our first Missions meeting at Saint Katherine. We have just completed 10 years of min-istry and outreach. On behalf of our entire committee, I would like to thank the community of Saint Katherine for their loving support of this important ministry. Everyone at that first meeting is still with us except Michael Ziu. Michael and his loving wife Dottie have been our strongest supporters. He is missed. May his memory be eternal.

Our Next Missions and Outreach Com-mittee Meeting. Our next Missions and Outreach Committee Meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 7:00pm in the Board Room. See you there!

PHILOPTOCHOS (by Eleni Kanakos, President) I HOPE YOU and your families enjoyed the holidays. May the New Year bring health, happiness, and peace to all.

Thank you to Trish Kapsidelis and all the ladies that helped make our Christmas Luncheon and Fashion Show a great success.

On Sunday, January 18, 12:30pm, we will have our first meeting in the board room of the Meletis Charuhas Cen-ter. I hope I see all of you there.

On Thursday, February 12, 12:00pm-3:00pm, we will have our Annual Valentine’s Day Senior Luncheon in the Meletis Charuhas Hall. Noulitsa Mitchell will chair this event, and can be reached at 703-256-4115 for reserva-tions. You may also contact me at [email protected] or 703-938-8360. We look forward to seeing all of you there.

I would like to extend a warm thank you to all ladies who helped make our Christmas bake sale a huge success, and to our chair lady Mary Varlas. We could not do it without everyone’s support.

Let me also take a moment to tell you about an im-portant fundraising initiative. Each individual Philoptochos member is asked to support an appeal made by His Emi-nence Archbishop Demetrios of America for the resurrec-tion of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center in NYC. After overcoming years of obstacles to rebuilding Saint Nicho-las, last month was the ground blessing for the new Saint Nicholas Church and Shrine. Please support this worthy cause so that we may see Saint Nicholas rebuilt. It is sug-gested by the National and the Metropolis Philoptochos, that each member donate $100, either through a one-time donation or by putting aside a smaller amount every month. The initiative continues until January of 2016. Please make your checks payable to Saint Katherine Philoptochos and note “Saint Nicholas Shrine” on the memo line. It can be mailed to our church, attention: Philoptochos. We deeply appreciate your support. I would like to thank the families that have already sent in their generous donation.

A big thank you to all who donated coats and jackets to the homeless and abused children.

As we start this year, lets work together to increase our stewardship, our participation, and our efforts as a whole. I know that together we can make 2015 another amazing year! BOOKSTORE AFTER CHRISTMAS SALE!! Everything in the bookstore is 20 percent off (rounded to the nearest dollar). Christmas items are limited, so visit early for the best selection.

The bookstore is open most Sundays after each liturgy. You may also call Sophia Tsangali at 703-671-1515 if you would like to visit during the week. As always, we thank you for your continued patronage and support. Saint Kath-erine Bookstore is a mission of Saint Katherine Church. May the Lord grant you many blessings in the New Year!

WOMEN’S BOOK CLUB WITH THE SENSE OF REBIRTH still fresh in our minds, how we live and think about our lives will be the theme of our next book. The book is Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives: the Life and Teachings of Elder Thaddeus of Vi-tovnica by Ana Smiljanic. The book is available in our bookstore. We will meet on Wednesdays, January 14 and 18 at 10:30am. We will also have a field trip on January 28 or February 11 to see El Greco at the National Museum for our old and new members! We always welcome new members and you can come and join us to see if it is the right fit for you! If you have any questions, please email Fay Mpras at [email protected].

SINGLE PARENTS FELLOWSHIP ALL SINGLE PARENTS are encouraged to come together at the Coffee Hour following first liturgy on Sunday, January 11. There will be a table reserved for us. So, grab your coffee and something to eat, and join us.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Our next monthly chapter meeting will be at the church on Sunday, January 11, following the second liturgy. Light appetizers will be served. We’ll see a brief presentation about the history of Helle Chapter and the Daughters of Penelope organization.

The Daughters of Penelope “Project Recognize” seeks to recognize women of Hellenic descent/Philhellenes who have served or are currently serving in any branch, or in any capacity of the military or Peace Corps. These individ-uals will be recognized at the DOP 85th National Conven-tion in San Francisco in July 2015. Please contact Karen Polizos for more information.

We are gearing up for our Chapter’s fundraiser, Tastes of the Mediterranean, on Friday evening, February 6. Please see details in the box below.

Save the Date! Tastes of the Mediterranean!!

GRACE

HOLY SONNETS: DEATH, BE NOT PROUD by John Donne

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so; For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me. From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be, Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow, And soonest our best men with thee do go, Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery. Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell, And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then? One short sleep past, we wake eternally And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church offers a grief support group, GRACE (Grief Recov-ery: Accepting, Coping, and Evolving). For further information, please call Fr. Costa Pavla-kos at 703-671-1515. Thank you to Maria Pa-pageorgiou for contributing articles nearly every month for the last 10 years.

The Divine Liturgy of the Great Church. Paul N. Harril-chak (editor), Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Reston, VA (publisher), 3rd edition, 2013, spiral bound, 280 pages. (Available at amazon.com)

It was almost 25 years ago that I became familiar with the first edition of this annotated and enhanced liturgy book. An archpriest serving in the Orthodox Church in America, Fr. Paul has used earlier editions of the book at Holy Trin-ity since the mid 1980s, but copies for study outside parish services were not available until now.

Too bad it’s taken so long, but with this release, both clergy and laity who love our familiar Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom should grab a copy. As a service book, it very effectively opens liturgy to more personal involve-ment. However, to truly appreciate all that the book has to offer, one has to sit down with an attitude of prayerful study and wrestle with it.

Imagine placing the two small facing pages of the typical liturgy book found in the pew pockets (oops, no pews at Holy Trinity!) on a legal-size page and then filling all the white space with Post-it notes, each with a comment, scripture reference, patristic quote, or historical nugget. Then, every 10 pages or so, insert a full page of a saint’s or theologian’s commentary relating to that point in the liturgy. And don’t forget the musical notations on almost every page so that the faithful can sing together in the ap-propriate Greek, Kievan, and Carpathian tones. It is a glo-rious jumble on paper, challenging at first glance, but well worth taking time to work through.

This is the work of a priestmonk and scholar with an eclectic intellect and, as you’ll see, pointed opinions. But his challenging points-of-view (choir directors, beware!) sit on firm foundations: the words of such ancient church-men as Chrysostom, Irenaeus, Augustine, and Cavasilas, and their modern spiritual descendants, men like Frs. John Meyendorff and Alexander Schmemann, New Skete found-ing abbot Laurence Mancuso, and Fr. Robert Taft, the prolific Byzantine Catholic scholar. In fact, it was Fr. Meyendorff himself who effectively placed the Holy Trini-ty parish into Fr. Paul’s hands so many years ago.

It is the shared push for “liturgical renewal” from Har-rilchak’s modern mentors that is behind his efforts to make concrete what this renewal might look and sound like at the parish level. “Renewal” is not in any sense the rewrit-ing of Holy Tradition as expressed in liturgy. It is, rather, jettisoning the pious accretions and affectations that have crept into liturgical practices over the last several genera-tions, many of which are now held to be the “proper and traditional” forms. Fr. Paul has mined liturgical history, gleaning the thoughts of those who knew that liturgy, to be transformational, has to be understood and experienced fully. He has set within his book some of the truest and clearest of the genuine gems to be found in the Orthodox Catholic Church of the East.

Give as you would if an angel awaited your gift at the door. Give as you would if tomorrow found you where the giving was over.

Give as you would to the Master if you met His loving look. Give as you would of your substance as if His hand your offering took.

2015 STEWARDSHIP FORM

“Christian Stewardship is learning how to be a responsible and concerned caretaker of Christ’s Church; it is learning how to enjoy Church life and be happy in Church work, for in Her dwells the fullness of the Spirit of God . . . our active commitment to use all our time, talent, and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgment of Christ’s redeeming love . . . caring for the needs of others . . . ” (Williams & McKibben in Oriented Leadership). If you have not yet made a stewardship commitment to your church for the year 2015, please take a moment and do so now.
