2015 Saltford Festival

What a great time we all had. Please see middle page spread for more details and pictures.

Help needed for Saltford Youth

A few days ago I was talking to a middle aged man who remembers, with affection, coming to a youth club in the Wansdyke Room at Saltford Hall.

In the last year or so the Parish council, spearheaded by Neil McKen and myself, on behalf of the SCA got together to reinstate youth facilities in Saltford. We’ve had a pretty successful year or so with funding coming from both the Parish Council and B&NES with the SCA supplying the venue. There are a number of children that benefit from the youth bus; those that I have seen have learned some excellent life skills and have come to think of the bus as a second home. For some it’s reinvigorated their approach to education. It’s a very small price to pay for the help it offers so many. In true terms if it helped just one child lead a better life it’s truly cost – justified.

The SCA wish to make this a permanent feature for Saltford and funding from B&NES will soon dry up. The SCA has committed to support this endeavour and we have provided the Wansdyke Room each Friday.

Make no mistake, the Youth Bus is a great success, we have the funds until September; we have a room to continue this facility beyond that; we have the support of the SCA to fund this in perpetuity and we have a young volunteer to assist in the running of the club for at least the next year. What we need is a qualified youth worker who would be free on Friday nights to organise this, for maybe 2-3 hours every Friday in return for an hourly rate.

Permissive Footpaths

The SCA has been trying to raise £3,000 to keep the permissive footpaths around the village open for another year, starting this Autumn, we have now raised £2353.50 and just as we were thinking we were not going to reach the target, we are delighted to announce that the Day Lewis Pharmacy have approached the SCA and have generously agreed to donate £646.50 to enable us to reach the target.

Permissive Footpaths (continued)

Jenni Scott, the pharmacist manager at Day Lewis Pharmacy said “At Day Lewis our core purpose is 'Helping people in the community stay healthy and feel better' and being able to help keep these pathways open is just one of the ways we try to achieve this every day. In our pharmacy here in Saltford we not only work with medicines but are passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles and being able to join the rest of the community in keep these footpaths will help you all to have easy access to free exercise. We realise how many people in both Saltford and Keynsham use these paths on a daily basis to keep active and look forward to seeing this continue.”

Without this generous donation from Day Lewis to cover the shortfall in our second year over 4.5km of permissive paths would be closed, possibly for ever. This would be a terrible shame as it is a haven for dog walkers and horse riders. A massive thank you to Day Lewis for their generous donation.

A huge thank you to everyone who has generously donated but if you use the paths be aware we may not be so lucky next year so please don’t leave it to donate or it could be too late: we need to ensure we have the funds by the end of July. We will now start accepting donations for the following year, but we won’t be issuing round donation envelopes for a couple of months yet. If you want to donate now then please make a donation by either picking up an envelope from the foyer of Saltford Hall or go to our website where a specific section can be found at http://www.saltfordhall.co.uk/Permissive_paths.html This page provides a link to a downloadable Gift Aid form and details of how to make a donation.

KEYNSHAM & SALTFORD WINE CIRCLE

Our Weekend Away to Llandudno at the end of May proved to be a great success. As always, we were joined by our good friends from Warm-ley Wine Circle who enjoyed the weekend with the rest of us. The hotel was comfortable and provided very good entertainment as well as good food! We visited Chester on Saturday - just in time for the Races, although nobody won anything! On Sunday we went on the Blaenau Festiniog Railway. This was a very long and beautiful ride through the Welsh Valleys. We had lunch at the end of our journey at Porthmadog and time to wan-der around the town. We had a leisurely journey through the Welsh National Park back to our hotel. A truly delightful weekend.

Our Secretary, Peter Church, gave us a beer tast-ing in June. It comprised six beers from around the country and included not only a description of each beer but also the history of the particular brewery that produced them.

We had the first of our homemade wine competi-tions this month, a dry white wine.

The winner was Alf Ashton. Congratulations Alfie!

At the end of June a group of us went to the Nail-sea Wine Circle’s annual BBQ held at Failand Vil-lage Hall. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us and the event took place actually in the hall, not in the grounds. Therefore we had to forgo the welly throwing, pin the tail on the donkey, bowls etc. However we did take part in the inter-circle wine competition where we managed to come third. Overall it was a very good BBQ and gave us a chance for plenty of socialising.

John Putley, The Barber Surgeon, entertained us in July with a history of medical procedures from 4000 B.C up to the 18th century. He was very knowledgeable and informative regarding apoth-ecaries, surgeons instruments and their methods and country remedies. Did you know that the

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD PROBUS CLUB Two Probus members from Saltford have stepped in to ensure continuity of club social events. Rob-ert Blatchford and Keith Richards will undertake administrative work involved in theatre shows and outings booked by Bob Porton who had for a long time carried the load alone.=The club, for retired professional and business men, has booked performances of the musicals “Oliver!” at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury in September and “Mack and Mabel” at the Millen-nium Theatre, Cardiff in December.A recent outing was to Cirencester and Rodmarton Manor, one of the last (1909-29) country houses to be built and furnished entirely by local craftsmen. Two weeks later members were, 480 years after Henry VIII’ historic visit, atActon Court, a beautifully conserved Tudor house at Iron Acton. At its June meeting the club sprang a surprise and illusions on members when the scheduled speaker, unable to appear, was replaced by Tony Griffith, telling of the art of the magician.

Romans regularly injected people and that 80 per cent of their medical expertise was lost with the collapse of the Roman Empire? A really interest-ing evening.

K&S LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY The Society’s summer programme of visits and walks continues. In June, members enjoyed a coach trip to Waddesdon Manor in Buckingham-shire, built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1874. Designed in the style of the great Renais-sance châteaux of the Loire Valley the house is a unique and elaborate building, with a wonderful collection of porcelain, furniture and fine art. The visit included a fascinating guided tour which gave some insight into the history of the family and their collecting; we also explored the gardens and grounds before travelling to the unspoilt Cotswold village of Burford for afternoon tea. Our next coach trip will be on Saturday 8th August, to the Imperial War Museum in London. The coach leaves from the Bath Hill East car-park in Keynsham – free parking on Saturdays – and a few places are still available for non-members at the time of writing. If you would like to join us, contact Roger Sirett immediately for details and a booking form, by email at [email protected] or by phone on 01761 471188.Places are also available on our final visit of the year: a coach trip to the Roman fortress and Museum at Caerleon in South Wales followed by a visit to Chepstow Castle on Thursday 24th September. If you are interested, contact Roger Sirett as above. For those whose interest is in researching history, the Society has a group pulling together informa-tion on events and changes in our local area since 1945. At the present time Saltford Library is CLOSED on Saturday mornings, because they are short-staffed. The Friends of Saltford Library feel this is a retrograde step, as families and members will stop using it on a Saturday. We have written to the Librarian to say that we have a list of local people who would volunteer to be with a Librarian on a Rota basis. If you feel it is important to keep the Library open on a Saturday, then 1) we MUST use it, and 2) if you would like to add your name to the possible Volunteers list please let me know. SALTFORD TENNIS CLUB

We have had a busy time since the last SCAN. We held a very successful Great British Tennis open day on Saturday 13th June which coincided with the opening day of the Saltford Festival. We had 50 people of all ages from mini, through to juniors and adults come and play tennis for free and sample our University of Bath coaching sessions.

We organised the Saltford Festival quiz night which was a sell-out event and enjoyed by all who attended and we all learned some interesting new facts from John Sweet, the quiz master.

We have been competing against other clubs in the Avon league, both ladies and mens, on Friday nights and we are now well into our annual ‘friend-ly’ intra club tournament where the matches have been competitive but also fun.

If you feel inspired from watching Wimbledon come and see us on court on a Monday morning for Ladies tennis from 9.30am and then on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm for social mixed doubles tennis.

SALTFORD AFTERNOON WI

During our May meeting members debated the National W I 2015 resolution which concerns the assessment of need in long term care, removing the distinction between nursing care and personal care. Members contributed their thoughts and many had examples from personal experience of family care needs. The results of our debate

would be taken to the National AGM held at the Albert Hall on 4th June. This serious issue was then followed by a lively beetle drive for which the prizes were hotly contested. We were then served with homemade cake and tea.

In June we had 2 speakers. Anne Birtwhistle from the Leonard Cheshire Disability gave us a talk on the wonderful work they do to support disabled people. Our next speaker, Kathryn Smeaton, told us of her interest in jewellery making. She demonstrated various techniques and passed round examples of items she has made, one of which won a gold star in the Avon Federation Craft competition. As usual the meeting ended with a raffle, tea, biscuits and the opportunity to chat with fellow members.

Other activities outside the monthly meetings have included a coach trip to Kew Gardens, a coffee morning held as part of the Saltford Festival and live screening of the W I National AGM at one of our member’s home where we could ‘drop-in’ during the day. SALTFORD BRASSMILL

June was a busy month for the Mill, hosting two Group visits as well as being open over both weekends of Festival Week; the Old Village day was particularly successful with 260 visitors looking around. July and August revert largely to the regular Open Days on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month with the next major event being English Heritage Open days on the 12th and 13th September, the Mill being open on both days - please come and look around and learn about the industrial history of the village. Look us up on www. brassmill.com

BRISTOL EMPIRE DRAGONS

We would like to thank everyone involved with organising such a successful village festival and for inviting us to be part of it. The River Day was a fantastic event in itself and everyone had a really good time. A fair few also enjoyed the experience of dragon boating during our have a go sessions and those racing for Canoe Avon and Avon Rowing Club. Congratulations to Avon Rowing Club on

their pride of the river victory even though it was a very close race.

On the 5th July we also held a charity event to help raise funds for our members who have been chosen to represent GB at the international dragon boat races in Canada this year. We had 4 teams of local people all racing against each other. Again everyone had a really good day and enjoyed the dragon boat experience. We raised £600 towards their fees and wish them well for Canada.

New members are always welcome so if you came to either of these events (or even if you didn’t) and would like to join us please come along to one of our training sessions. Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at 6.30pm and Sunday’s at 9am. Please check first as if our numbers are really low or we are racing on a Sunday the session may not run. Email: [email protected]

SALTFORD FAIRTRADE GROUP

The Saltford Fairtrade Group would like to thank everyone in Saltford for embracing the use of Fairtrade products during the Saltford Festival.

A wonderful array of venues served Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar including Eastover Farm, The Saltford Golf Course, St Mary’s Church, the

Brownies and Guides, Saltford Manor and The Saltford Rowing Club. Our very own Saltford Co-operative store sourced Fairtrade products throughout

the festival and generously donated goods as well, and we hope you sampled some of the lovely Fairtrade chocolate donated by Saltford Tesco.

A special thanks goes to the Saltford Community Association for buying, organising and distributing Fairtrade products. Every event at the Saltford Hall served Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar and wine. It was good to see that

our local producers and suppliers were also supported by the Festival. We hope that you will remember when purchasing Fairtrade products you will be supporting emerging country farmers earn a fair price for their produce and raise their standard of living.

LIONS CLUB OF KEYNSHAM

In May the club had its Charter Anniversary dinner commemorating 45 years of service to the local community.

The Lions club have been involved in the last few weeks with the Saltford Village Festival and the Keynsham Music Festival. The latter included the Lions annual Duck Race - 1500 ducks went for a swim in the River Chew from the weir to the railway bridge in Keynsham Memorial Park. The “owner” of the first duck received a prize of £150. At the same time, the Corporate Ducks (each sponsored by a local business), took their exercise – the winner being “Bristol Fun-For-Hire” of Stockwood Vale. Throughout the day the ladies organised a refreshment tent which was well supported. Approx £2000 was raised which will be used on selected charitable activities in the local area.

During July we welcomed 16 children from Cher-nobyl who were hosted for 4 weeks by CCLL (Cher-nobyl Children’s Lifeline) with families in the Bristol area. The ladies of KLC recently held a car boot sale raising £281 towards their visit. KLC provided new trainers for all the children and hosted a BBQ for them and their host families at Lays Farm.

If you would like to know more about Keynsham Lions and their activities, please visit www.keyn-shamlions.org.uk or telephone 0117 932 625.

SALTFORD EVENING W.I.

At our June meeting we were entertained by a lady playing the piano or, as was once said, trip-ping the ivory keys. She began with songs from the 40’s, carried on through to the 50’s and finally reached the present day. So we had ‘We’ll gather Lilacs’ by Ivor Novello through to music from ‘The

Phantom of the Opera’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Nothing from the ‘rappers’ of today though! It was very relaxing and her anecdotes from the past were amusing.

During June we had our annual train ride to Wey-mouth and the weather was sunny and warm but not warm enough to warrant changing into our bi-kinis. Fish & Chips was enjoyed by most of us and we strolled round the harbour enjoying the sea breezes - culminating in a cream tea. Perhaps this was the reason for not changing into swimwear.

Another trip to Standerwick Farm was very enjoy-able and a little unusual. We drove down a lane to a white painted cottage, with an extensive garden. The owners had transformed their house inside to a museum, collecting and exhibiting many curi-ous items from the past. It was fascinating and very unusual. Outside many animals were living happily, including a tame turkey that strutted and danced for us. Christmas will never be the same. After this finale we then sat and enjoyed a cream

tea - yet again!

At the successful Saltford Festival we had a stall selling books, bric-a-brac and home made cakes and this too proved popular.

At our next get-together in July we have been asked to bring something for the homeless i.e. socks or ‘large knickers’ – haven’t worked that one out yet. No doubt all will be revealed at our July meeting.

Charity Music NightSaltford Community Association welcomes everyone to a very special Charity Music Night on Wednes-day 29th July at Saltford Hall. We are thrilled to announce that headlining our event will be Sissy Fortuin and Barry Mcqurk direct from South Africa. Sissy and Barry host a dinner show that is currently the Number 1 tourist attraction in the whole of the Western Cape and this includes Cape Town!

Sissy and Barry have a very interesting back story. Barry moved to South Africa approximately 20 years ago because of work commitments. He has a history of being involved in music throughout the years and now runs a community studio for the benefit of locals to help them have their music recorded for free. He first heard Sissy’s voice in a local church choir. At that time Sissy was unaware of western artists like Sinatra and didn’t even sing any songs in English. Barry recognised straight away the quality of her voice and knew that given a little coaching it would be perfect in covering some of the great standards. What you hear now is the finished article and it can only be described as a Susan Boyle mo-ment when one hears Sissy perform for the first time. She has a spine tingling voice that is perfect for her repertoire of Popular, Jazz and traditional African songs.

The night would not be complete without some very able support acts and to complete our program we have some excellent local musicians and singers on show including a family singing group “Keep it in the Family” and Ron Brown (from the Blue Notes), Tony Williams and John Waldren.

All performers are performing for free and the event is being held to benefit 3 local charities. It is bound to be a wonderful night so don’t delay ordering your tickets and bring your friends and family. See below for more details on tickets and food, which will include an alternative vegetarian dish.

The Celebration of a VillageSaltford Festival 2015 - Saturday June 13th - Sunday June 21st

Thank you to all those who offered support for the festival. Individual thanks are usually given to those who play prominent roles in events. My concern is that there is rarely the opportunity to recognise those people who are simply 'there'; reliable, motivated and generous. Chris and I want you all to know that the success of the festival was down to everyone.

In this short article I have not attempted to mention all the events, but simply to give a flavour of the amazing festival week.

The week started on Saturday 13th June, with the village crier and his bell, followed by the festival opening by Jacob Rees-Mogg MP and his 6 year old son Peter. We would like to thank them for their time and their encouragement. There was a great turn out of societies, advertising their activities and encouraging new members. The famous Saltford Cafe, with Newton Farm Bacon Butties, did nothing for village waist lines! In the evening the Village Choir gave a very successful concert for over 100 people and others were entertained up at Saltford Golf Club.

The weather was with us on The Old Village Day and indeed for all the week! Songs of Praise rang out from the Church. Consistent waves of visitors rolled down the High Street, to be charmed by The Farandole Dancers and Somerset Morris, performing against an idyllic backdrop of roses, afternoon tea and Vintage Brass in the Manor Garden. Around the corner was a traditional Punch and Judy show and the, now legendary, Dog Show. In the Church Hall the exhibition of paintings by Avon Valley Painters was reported to

have had record sales. The Church opened all week for quiet contemplation and for a view of the creative Flower Show. Stalls in the street were in abundance and if you walked to the Brass Mill and on to the Car Show more treats were in store. In Saltford House the Scouts provided traditional experiences, remembered from my Guiding days, while in Jeffery's Lodge the organisation was great for games for younger children. The Bird in Hand having provided refuge from the rain in previous years, provided ambiance, good ale and fine music with crowds abounding!

Evening events were of a very high standard showcasing local talent with the addition of Frenchman Street Jazz Bandand Bob Webb the acclaimed comedian. As a result guests were given the difficult choice between A Choir concert, the Quiz, a Jazz Evening, a 40's Celebration, a Night of Magic and Mystery and a Gala Night. The events were supported

by local teams producing highly praised food and with Sylvia on constant Fairtrade supply organisation. Our thanks to Saltford Co Op for their very generous donation of large quantities of Fairtrade tea and coffee throughout the week.

During the week walks and lunchtime talks were inspirational, attracting a great deal of interest and good audiences. Comments included "we need to have more of these talks from local enthusiasts"Competitions had a good number of entries, with a plea from one resident to "leave the scarecrows up for the rest of the year!" Publications resulting were the Poetry Competition Booklet, The Saltford Memories Book, Calendar and the Christmas Cards, still available from [email protected]

The Old River Day Finale, on Sunday 21st June was a brave venture, which was very successful.

We were introduced to most of the river fraternity: rowers, canoeists and the amazing dragon boat group. A masterly presentation of races, taster sessions and demonstrations resulted in a double success for the Sports Club! The Jolly Sailor, Riverside and the Bird in Hand did their best! Most people enjoyed just messing about on a part of the river bank that they may never have visited previously. Thanks go to the Guides and Brownies who presented challenging field events.

The festival lives on through the new friendships formed and old ones renewed. During the festival the village comes together, to understand its completeness, to marvel at the talent in the community and to consider the importance of valuing traditional aspects of our culture as well as modern innovation.

Come forward now if you want to be involved on Saltford Festival 2017. Jill Williams [email protected]

Postscript by Steve Johnson, Chair, Saltford Community Association

I would like to thank the many, many people who helped with the festival this year; I particularly want to thank those of you that sent pictures to me so that we could share them with everyone on Facebook, all 850 of them! I’m not going to name those who sent them in, please go to Facebook and see who sent them in yourselves and enjoy the pictures at the same time!https://www.facebook.com/pages/Saltford-Festival/110300772368555

The thing is, you see, that at the height of the festival there were 6000 page visits and over 50000 photograph views, so that’s a person looking at a photo every 20 seconds day and night; and there were people viewing photos at 2 and 3 o’clock in the morning. The most popular, well you probably guessed it, was the Dog Show pictures; followed by the scarecrows and then the old river day.You can still send me photo’s as there are 50,000 reasons not to keep them to yourself! Nothing’s too big and you can never send too many – [email protected].

I’m looking forward to 2017!

Saltford Short Mat Bowls ClubI am writing this item at the beginning of July on the hottest day of the year, so far, with the wonderful Saltford Festival still very recent. During that week we held an open afternoon to introduce our sport to others and am delighted to report that seven people came to Have a Roll up. One of the ladies was very interested and has been on two more occasions. How wonderful.

We have a friendly match at home arranged against Timsbury in July, with the return leg in August (more news in the next edition).

Saltford will be represented at the Bristol Harbour Festival on the weekend of 18th and 19th July when the Bowls Development Alliance will he running a Roadshow. They are an organisation set up to encourage everyone to try bowls. B.D.A. will supply a short mat, together with all equipment, which will be laid next to the ‘M’ shed, hand out information on how to get involved and invite members of the public to have a go! A fun couple of days.

Some of our fans (?) will know that we have two teams (The Scallywags and the Scamps) playing competitively in the Bristol & District League. At the A.G.M. earlier in the year we were awarded 15 individual HOT SHOT BADGES for scoring maximum shots in an end.

If anyone does the arithmetic you may be confused. Some won more than one!

If you fancy trying a new skill – give me a call on 01225 872389. Joan Hamblin (secre-tary)

Saltford Village ChoirOur Summer Concert ‘Showtime’opened the evening events of the Saltford Festival.

It was a great success despite a tricky start with no lights or microphones.

We were joined by members of the Drama Club whose poems ranged from comic

to slightly riske.

At the time of writing we still have to sing at a wedding in Bath Abbey.

We start the New term on Tuesday 11th September do come along to the Wansdyke

Room if you would like to join us.

The following poem by Hugh Cawdron of Saltford unfortunately missed being included in the Saltford Poetry Competiton during the Festival. It was composed by him on 16 September 2009 at the cross at Tedsmore, Shropshire to mark where his friend Wing Commdander David Wilkerson DSO DFC RAFVR died on 16 September 1944 aged 27. David was the creator of 578 Squadron of Halifax heavy bombers based at Burn near Selby and had survived 47 operations against the enemy as a pilot. He was posthumously awarded the USA Silver Star for Gallantry in action.

What do I know about this lane cut in the side of the Tedsmore hill with west bank rising to the sky and east side sloping down at will,

the drystone wall, the fern and full grown treeswhose canopies meet to offer shade and dappled sunlight breeze?

I know that on one Sunday morn sixty five years ago today the peace and beauty of this place was shattered by a tragedy.

An aircraft falling from the sky, smashing with relentless spin,a screeching, fiery, metal hell with five young crewmen trapped therein.

I know that three of them survived but two, beyond all human aid were laid to rest upon on this bank. One was my friend, his journey made.

He knew the deadly risks he faced but shrugged them off with youthful smileinspiring others to the same. Leading and caring was his style.

I made this cross to mark the place where England lost a valued knight a warrior with intent to win a contest 'gainst the scourge of might.

And remind us that he gave his life to keep us safe and to restore the freedom which we now enjoy to walk this lane for evermore.

Hugh’s biography of him entitled “Based at Burn” is available on loan from Saltford Library

Can you help us with advertising coordination?

We have had great feedback following the introduction of colour, the increase in number of pages and the quality of the production of SCAN over the last couple of years. We are indebted to our editor Peter Coombs for composing each edition and we are particularly grateful to our advertisers, many of whom have advertised in SCAN for years and heartily welcome those that have only just started. Our thanks also go to Saltford Parish Council for their £500 grant towards the production costs.

As a community organisation our primary purpose of producing and distributing 3000 copies of each edition of the SCAN is to keep the residents of Saltford and surrounding areas fully informed of what is going on in their local community. Its popularity means that despite an increase in costs we are fully covered by our in-come. This is only possible as we contact current and prospective advertisers every edition.

If you could spare a few hours to undertake this task please e-mail [email protected] or leave a message at the Office (01225 874081) and our over-worked treasurer will get straight back to you!

OTHER NEWS

The Role of Select Committees by Jacob Rees-Mogg MPSelect Committees play an important part in the scrutiny of government. The general function of select committees is to hold to account individual departments and the Gov-ernment as a whole. Most select committees scrutinise a specific Government depart-ment, for example, the Defence Committee scrutinises the Ministry of Defence but there are also a number of committees with broader remits that cross departments.

I currently sit on the Treasury Select Committee which examines the expenditure and administration of H.M. Treasury, H.M. Revenue & Customs and bodies such as the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority. The Wright Reforms, implemented in 2010, introduced the election of chairmen who had previously been appointed by the Whips. This has given them more independence and has enhanced the ability to hold the government to account. Select committees decide their own agendas and then con-duct investigations by gathering written and oral evidence. The conclusions and recom-mendations of these investigations are reported to the Commons and published on the Parliament website after which the government usually has 60 days to reply.

Another outcome of the Wright Reforms was the introduction of the Backbench Busi-ness Committee which was established to empower backbench MPs. This Committee has the ability to schedule business either in the House of Commons Chamber or in Westminster Hall on days set aside for non-government business. Select committees will be important in this Parliament as debates over issues such as the BBC licence fee, the Human Rights Act and the problem of Islamic radicalisation are addressed.

Top up your oil tank before winterLocal charity West of England Rural Network is advising householders to top up their domestic oil tanks before expected price rises in autumn and winter. The charity runs a community oil buying scheme which aims to save local people money on their oil bills by placing a collective order once a month. Scheme co-ordinator Jill Baker says “oil prices tend to rise in autumn and winter as demand increases. By placing a single large order we can negotiate with suppliers and everyone pays less.”

The West of England Rural Network are able to offer free memberships to their Commu-nity Oil Buying Scheme (normally £20/year) to anyone over 70 living in the West of Eng-land who uses domestic heating oil. This is thanks to a second grant awarded by Quar-tet Community Foundation from their ‘Surviving Winter’ fund. The scheme is open to all residents of Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bristol. Local community buildings such as village halls, schools and churches can also benefit from the scheme, as well as businesses such as farms, shops and offices.

The scheme works by using the buying power of a large order to negotiate with all the suppliers who serve our area. The negotiated price is typically 4.5p less than the aver-age price quoted and most members save around £120 per year. If you are interested in joining the community oil buying scheme, call Jill Baker on 01275 333701 or visit www.wern.org.uk/oil

Our June trip to Libourne was timed to take place during the Libourne Music Festival so unfortunately we missed the Saltford Festival.

The group, aged 15 to a little bit over 80 was made up of 18 members plus 15 Somerset Morris dancers & musicians. We were accommodated in homes (one going back to the time of the French Revolution), tents and a caravan! The hospitality was friendly and generous.

Our two junior Twinning members, jointly funded by the Lions Club of Keynsham and the Association’s fund raising, are members of Keynsham Youth Council. They took part in all the activities which included visits to schools for lunch. We hope their enthusiasm will catch on so that other youngsters become involved - they are our future!

As usual, there were 2 ‘days out’: one to the Dordogne to visit the Château de Benac, followed by lunch and trip on a gabarre (a flat bottomed cargo boat) and a day based at the bay of Arcachon, where we visited Le Teich bird reserve.

A more formal side of the visit celebrated the links between Libourne & its twin towns: Keynsham, Schwandorf in Bavaria (a twinning of 50 years!) and Logroño in Spain. There was a dinner for key representatives of each town, including the two young twinning members, at Chateau de La Rivière and a formal Reception in the Hotel de Ville.

Somerset Morris did us proud, dancing in Libourne’s market square on a hot evening. At the same time we were hosting a market table, with samples of British fare: Pimms, Ginger wine, elderflower cordial, marmalade, lemon curd, cheese & pickle, cakes and shortbread.

Next day, the Mairie hosted a BBQ for over 80 ‘twinners’ at Lac des Dagueys, a leisure area on the outskirts of the town, which has an Olympic size rowing lake.

There was still time in the week-long visit to enjoy being with our hosts and a huge range of activities: meals out, visits to a garden and galleries, markets, swimming, walks and socialising.

Our friends will return to Keynsham in 2017 when we celebrate 40 years of our twin-ning, so now’s a good time to join us!

Neighbourhood Watch meeting 9 September 2015A Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on Wednesday 9th

September 2015, from 7.00 pm till 9.00 pm at Saltford Hall, organised by the local Police and hosted by the Parish Council. Please come along to find out more about Neighbourhood Watch, see what is happening in your area, or for help in setting up a new Neighbourhood Watch area.

Notice boards by the Post OfficeWe are looking at replacing the notice boards outside the Post Office which are rather old and increasingly hard to read. Quotes for new ones are being sought and this is likely to be decided at our September meeting.

A slipway in the Shallows? The river Avon in Saltford provides leisure facilities for residents and visitors alike. Safety should be of paramount importance, and the river bank is getting eroded in the Shallows where many small boat and canoe users access the river. The Parish Council has asked B&NES Council to investigate the provision of a slipway or equivalent by the Shallows car park with appropriate access via steps or a non-slip slope to allow safe entry and exit. We are also asking that the design of such a slipway or equivalent should be discussed with the River Avon Users Consultative Committee and Canoe Avon so that it is fit for purpose.

Keynsham & District Dial a Ride (KDDAR)Over 100 Saltford residents are members of KDDAR, a vital door-to-door service for those unable to get around by other means. The Parish Council has asked B&NES Council to review how it calculates the subsidy it provides per passenger journey for Community Transport in the B&NES area, because of a perceived unfairness to KDDAR. The average subsidy by B&NES Council per passenger journey for KDDAR is £2.93 compared with £6.32 for the Midsomer Norton and Radstock Dial-a-Ride.

A New Rector for Saltford, Corston and Newton St. Loe The service of Celebration for the New Ministry of Revd. Daile Wilshere will take place at Holy Trinity, Newton St Loe on Sunday 9th August at 6.30pm. All are welcome. Christian Aid Week 10th to 16th May 2015 Thank you to everyone who helped make this week a success – the many volunteers who gave up their time but also the people of Saltford who gave so generously this year. Christian Aid Week raised a fantastic £3193.96. These donations will help women like Loki in Ethiopia. Christian Aid bought her a goat and a cow, giving her independence and removing her need to walk eight hours on several days a week to collect firewood to sell. She can now far better look after her children and in her words, she tells us ‘You hav e brought me happiness.’ Thank you. Saltford Festival It was lovely to see so many people visit the Flower Festival in church during Festival week and to have various organisations represented at the Songs of Praise. We may not know you, but God does. He knows

where you are in life and what concerns you have,

and it is He who wants to reach out to you. He

knows about the dark days as well as the good

days. He knows of the days of joy and laughter as

well as the days of despair. We encourage you to

give Church a go, and see what happens. Jesus

identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd who

cares for people like us, and actually proved it by

living and dying in our place to make a way back

to God again.

-------------------------------------------------------------For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all. (1 Tim 2 v3-6)
