The San Diego Art Institute: Can you hear me now?

Once voted San Diegos best-kept secret, the San Diego Art Institute is marketing itself slowly and surely to step away from that moniker. Even though it is a positive one for the organization, it sheds light on the obvious. Why dont more people know this 65year-old organization and its work?

SDAI endeavors to support the making of quality art in all media, as a re ection of the San Diego areas diverse population. SDAI is available and accessible to the community, it provides a nurturing environment for artists professional development, to promulgate local, national and international recognition, and to connect artists with the potential for increasing income and exhibition opportunities.

So, with all that said, who are we and what do we do? SDAI is a 501(c)(3) nonpro t art and community gallery. We are dedicated to:

Actively promoting California artists, the arts, and arts education. Providing opportunities for artists and supporting activities that contribute to

their continued creativity and development. Fostering a sense of community by having public monthly exhibitions and special

events that increase awareness, stimulate respectful yet authentic dialogue, encourage exploration, and aid in the understanding of communities and the issues that impact and interest them.

SDAI is neither a traditional museum nor a for-pro t galleryfor-pro t gallery; rather we function much like a municipal gallery and offer a comprehensive look at the visual art scene here in San Diego. SDAI is unique in that its exhibitions offer the individual an opportunity to experience the contemporary visual arts of the Southern California/Baja region in a professional and elegant setting, as well as offering the regional artist an opportunity for exposure, thereby supporting both the local and visitor community. SDAI lls in the gap between the past and the present here in Balboa Park.

Education and outreach rank high on the goals of SDAI and programs, lectures, classes and bus trips are part of its schedule of events. SDAIs Educational Department and its facility at Ray Street are able to offer a variety of programs and public events for youth, family, student, and adult audiences. The very versatile Art Box 1 and Art Box 2 programs strengthen SDAIs ties to the community and expand museum audiences. Using SDAIs exhibitions as a vehicle, those two programs promote public understanding, the appreciation of contemporary art, and its relationships to our everyday life. These programs provide unique opportunities for the public to become closely engaged with the exhibition and to come in close contact with contemporary (living) artists.

Outreach Through ExhibitionOutreach Through Exhibition is a unique concept that engages the visual arts for an understanding of the value of the visual arts beyond aesthetics. SDAI has partnered with many organizations to show the integral value to the community of the visual arts as it relates to intrinsic issues of self-esteem, self-worth, academic achievement, healing, creative processes, abstract-thought process, language acuity, and early childhood and developmental processes. SDAI has developed original exhibitions directly related to community issues like the border, health, healing, and cross-generational dialogue. This program of exhibition and partnership is meant to show our community that the visual arts and artists are integral and necessary and not a luxury that is subject to budget cutbacks.

SDAI recognizes the value of cooperation and consolidation to create an organization with a rm base in accountability and professionalism. We have in recent years acquired two other organizations that expand and ful ll our offerings not only to the artist but the community in general--COVA: Combined Organizations for the Visual Arts and SDAD: San Diego Art Department. The consolidation of

    Correspondences and Elevation

When I started to organize the pieces that now constitute this series, I used canvases that were identical in height but variable in width. They t together both physically and in content, like stanzas of a poem. Some of these paintings were originally created as diptychs, and the diptychs appear in their entirety here.

The arrangement and composition of this group of paintings invites change. This composition could absorb new paintings; pieces could be reorganized and presented differently in spaces of different proportions.

For this exhibition, I considered the dynamics of the space rst and experimented with the size of the wall and the scale of the art, and the way one can read the piece as a whole from a distance and read each element when being up close.

Each element is a result of my experiments with outdoor spaces. This exhibition is an opportunity for me to experiment with bringing these elements into a relationship with indoor space.

I borrowed the title Correspondences and Elevation from two of my favorite Baudelaire poems. Those poems express a connection to a sequence of scenes from a life and a living landscape.

    Crosses, Shrines and Tributes

There is something very special about the process of taking something old and making new of it. It is a metamorphosis like our transitory lives. The parts that go into a piece have had lives as something else. Now they are given a second life in a magical way. The mundane needs to be a bit more whimsical!

Van Goghs ear, Brancusis soap dish, Cross for Safe Travel and shrines to Sleepy, The Black Madonna, and St. Vitus are found in this gallery sanctuary.

My vision and imagery are in uenced by art history, Mexican, Oceanic and African folk art, superstitions, fairy tales and myth, childhood toys, nostalgic tools, dreams and intuition.

The objects used are found objects. Many have come from the debris left by our 2007 San Diego res (Harris Fire). I frequently visit thrift shops, swap meets and garage sales. I am drawn to feminine things like high-heeled shoes, dolls, hands, kitchenware, irons, toys and small bottles as well as masculine saws, tools and broken machinery.

Every artwork has a story and history to tell. One wonders about each part and if it was some sort of old relic, machine or discarded item. How was it used?

About MeSusan Osborn lives in Bonita, CA and is currently teaching drawing and painting classes at The Athenaeum and the San Diego Art Department. She taught art for seventeen years at The Bishops School in La Jolla. Her varied teaching experience includes art and photography classes at Southwestern College and numerous private lessons.

Susan received her Master of Arts degree from Cal State University, San Diego. She has held numerous exhibitions and won many prizes for her work, including exhibitions at the San Diego Museum of Art, the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC-Xerox) and at the Museo Internacional de Electrogra a, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha in Cuenca, Spain.

In 2007, Susan took a class from Michael deMeng in assemblage and a whole new art world opened up to her. The experience of transforming the old and discarded into mysterious relics has changed the way she looks at society and what we do with common ordinary things around us.

these organizations into programs of SDAI was done in a spirit of wisdom and cooperation to bene t the growth of the visual arts as a whole. The acquisition of SDAD extends our physical presence out of Balboa Park and brings us back to our earlier roots of art-making and professional artistic development. Most recently SDAD has developed the Plein Air Paint-out and exhibition, a juried competition of plein air artworks recently done in the North Park area. We also in our advocacy role feel that the community on and around Ray Street needs support to solidify the emerging art and gallery community. In addition to advocacy, the North Park for the Arts program is developing and marketing a gallery guide and seeks nancing of artworks on the University Avenue corridor and pocket parks. This group is essential in moving forward the opportunity for a true artist community. Be involved.

In order to better service its programs, SDAI has reorganized its exhibition schedule in order to have its two awards shows in alternating years. This year we presented both the Ginger and the Palette Awards during the current Southern California Exhibition. Our most deserving and distinguished recipients were Ruth Hoffman and James Hubbell respectively.

SDAIs steady growth is due to dedicated people and volunteers, including Board Members and longtime friends. We need to focus on engaging the funding community and directly requesting nancial support from all constituents to properly run this organization. SDAI is well worth the investment. Please step forward to support SDAI. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

    Sincerely, Timothy FieldExecutive Director
