The Art of Photography Show’s International Exhibition Opens
September 29, 2012 at SDAI’s Museum of the Living Artist
The Art of Photography Show’s International Exhibition, now in its eighth year, will be opening September 29th at the San Diego Art Institute’s Museum of the Living Artist in Balboa Park. The founder and producer, Steven Churchill, and the Executive Director of SDAI, Tim Field, have joined forces to see this exhibition raise the bar on international art shows.
The Art of Photography Show is an established and critical force in the world of contemporary photography. The show provides tangible benefits to artists trying to break into the public eye. The International Exhibition provides value to artists at every turn, from first-rate viewing in the judging process to exhibition and publication opportunities, photo industry connections, and even monetary awards.
The producer of the Art of Photography Show, Steven Churchill, is dedicated to providing exposure to new and emerging artists, and has done so with great effect; last year’s viewing audience exceeded 30,000 people. The diversity and draw of last year’s competition was astounding, with entries from 72 countries.
For photographers, the distinguishing feature of this competition is its notable jurors. Each year the Art of Photography Show invites a curator from a major museum to jury the show. This year’s juror is Julian Cox, the Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
Selected works will be on exhibit for a full six weeks at SDAI’s Museum of the Living Artist. On September 29th the exhibition will debut with an opening gala that will draw over 1,500 guests, bringing elite attendees, including art collectors, curators, designers, architects, executives, civic and government leaders, not to mention the stars of the show – the artists. PUsH/PuLLabstract - to pull away / express - to push forth
Solo Show SDAI:MOLA June 8 to July 15, 2012
Contemporary charcoal drawing - vine charcoal, charkole, compressed charcoal, loose charcoal, homemade charcoal, erasers, shammies, put on, wipe down, erase, scratch, re-apply, take away, rhythm, marks, music. Add in gesso wash, ink wash, more charcoal, take away, add more, push-pull, give/take, find an image, erase an image, add an idea, scribble over an area, respond to the process, having faith in doubt, figuring it out.
Complicate/Simplify, large drawings, small paintings. Shapes, lines, color, form, abstraction, realism, push-pull....
I’m lucky to spend a good part of the year in Hawaii. Traveling back and forth, from island to mainland, is its own form of push-pull. Both here and there, I enjoy scavenging during beach walks. Picking up kukui nuts, leaves, pods, burlap, branches, coconuts, flowers, string, what I find left behind, I bring to the studio. I use them to draw, from observation, to look at and look away, to use or not use, for different works of art. I find the calm and the battle in the studio, wherever I am...
Three of the large works were created in Hawaii, the others, here in San Diego. The charcoal drawing, a new experience, a response to the organic feeling of island life. The small paintings, created in San Diego, an exploration inspired also by the principles of abex and the shapes and textures found in nature.

Figurative Explorations: Drawings and Paintings
Solo Show SDAI:MOLA June 8 to July 15, 2012
The figure in a variety of expressions, media, and formats has long been an ongoing interest for me, since my student days. The subject is endlessly fascinating and variable and gives me the opportunity to use it to portray, reflect, suggest, imagine the human beings we are, could be, might have been, think we are, want to be.
Recently I have been exploring ways of connecting figurative elements with abstract or nonobjective principles by focusing on color, line, shape, pattern, texture, composition. I hope to show something about the subject rather than represent it in an exact way. My drawings frequently use exaggeration to portray a feeling or mood.
Over the last few years I have done several series of figurative drawings and paintings with different focuses: “Seated Figure Series,“ “Abstract Figure Series,” “Deconstructed Figure Series,” “Double/Multiple Exposure Series,” “Fault Lines.” For this show, I am choosing to show both drawings and paintings from these series, focusing on the figure in a range of media on paper: charcoal, pencil, crayon, collage, watermedia, acrylic.

The Paint-out is an SDAI-sponsored program to support and promote the art of plein-air paint-ing (painting outside on location). Participating artists gather at designated San Diego locations to paint in plein air and socialize. An informal critique of a day’s paintings is performed with intent to pro-vide a learning and supportive environment. SDAI members and non-members, of all skill levels, are welcome to participate.
Each year there will be a juried exhibition at the Museum of the Living Artist. The show, as part of a regional show, will feature paintings selected from the paint-out program’s Paint-out events. Paintings must have a paint-out coordinator’s initials on the back to be eligible for the exhibition. The maximum size un-framed painting is 11” x 14”. A painting must be framed and wired for hanging.
EVENTSPaint-out events in 2012 occur February through August on the first Saturday of the month. In September the paint-out is on the second Satur-day. Participants can arrive and paint anytime after sunrise. Canvases will be initialed at the noon meeting and critiqued.
The following is a list of upcoming Paint-out events:

The Gathering is a social, relaxed group where artists, aficionados, their spouses or significant others meet over potluck to discuss their latest work and adventures. Children are welcome but the work is not censored, so parental discretion is strongly advised.
The next Gathering dates will be:
Sunday, May 6 & June 10Description and schedule:• 3:30 to 4:00: bring artwork and check in.• 4:00: doors are locked (ring the doorbell after 4).• 4:30-5:30: artists break off into groups of 9 artists to
present their work. (If enough under-age artists bring work, they will be given a separate group and leader.) Non-presenters can continue socializing or join the group of their choice.
• 5:30 to 6:00: groups finish up, reconvene, socialize and/or help tidy up.
Artists can bring up to 3 pieces of artwork. All skill levels show work for fun, feedback, mentoring and exposure. In the UU tradition there will be a ‘question of the day’ (hereafter known as ‘the Molly’), which artists can answer or ignore when showing their work.
Artists are encouraged to bring show flyers, books, magazines, announcements, etc., to share. People who bring Art and Food (or just food) get in free. Everyone else is $5 per individual, couple or family.
New members: this is a great opportunity to meet other members, show your work and see the work being created in the San Diego area.
Everyone else: show us your work, whether you’re getting into the juried shows or not. We want to see what you are doing and have the opportunity to talk with you.
SDAI is continually growing and evaluating programs in order to provide the artist community with exceptional programming and opportunities. Feedback is always appreciated and, if you would like to do so, please email Lesley Anderson at: [email protected].
