Key continuity editing techniques:

Continuity: Continuity editing is the process, in film and video creation, of combining more or less related shots, or different components cut from a single shot, into a sequence so as to direct the viewer’s attention to a pre-existing consistency of story across both time and physical location.

The benefit for the viewer is that it allows the narrative to have structure. It allows short sequences to flow seamlessly into one another.

The pictures above are an example of how continuity editing is, these are short sequences that are put together to create a narrative and allows the viewer to understand what is going on.

180’ rule: The 180’ rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another.

The 180’ rule is the opposite of what is called a ‘reverse angle’. The reverse angle is when the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects.

Match on action: Cutting on action or matching refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot’s action.

Eye line match: An eye line is a film editing technique associated with the continuity editing system. It is based on the premise that an audience will want to see the character on-screen is seeing.

Cutaway: A cutaway is a shot of something related to but outside the main action of a scene. It’s shot that cuts away from the main action to a separate or secondary action.

Cross cutting: Cross-cutting is an editing technique most often used I films to establish action occurring at the same place. In a cross cut the camera will cut away from one action to another action, which can suggest the simultaneity of these two actions but this is not always the case.

Jump cut: A jump cut is a cut film editing in which two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly if it all.
