Greetings!

It is great to see the arrival of sunny weather to accompany us into the

last few months of school. Students have been showing up and working hard on

state testing and Renaissance Reading and Math assessments. Many of them have

also taken advantage of the fun classes and activities we offer here at Sim Center

as well, such as building catapults, participating in dance and theater routines, de-

signing and creating outfits, planning student appreciation events, learning life-

saving CPR or cooking up yummy treats. Our graduating seniors have been hard at

work completing their Service Learning projects and giving their final presenta-

tions for Senior Capstone. Celebrations of the SAVA senior college trip and gradua-

tion are right around the corner. Our eighth-graders are also preparing for their

promotion ceremony on Thursday, May 25 at 1 pm in the Event Center. We are so

proud of their efforts and look forward to sending them off to do great things.

For students continuing on at SAVA, re-enrollment packets for the 2017-2018

school year are now available so don’t forget to fill them out and return them as

soon as possible. To highlight all the great things that go on at SAVA in our CTE

programs, the Sim Center is hosting SAVA’s first ever CTE Gala on June 1 at 4:30

This year students from SAVA-Sim were able to participate in a catapult launch challenge. It was open to all grades.

Students were provided the supplies and given two hours a day from May 9-12th to create their catapult. The winning

team received an ice cream party. A big thank you to the teachers that helped make this possible: Mr. Castleman, Mr.

Lee, and Mr. Mendoza

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Ben Franklin

The Theatre students, Ms. Nary, and Mrs. Sons went to go see the

Sierra College performance of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. You can ask any of

your students, and they will tell you, the performance was AMAZING! We

had a great time touring the beautiful Sierra College Campus (despite the

rain!) and seeing all the amazing opportunities that the campus has to offer.

We were blown away by the campus! It has such a great University feel, even

though it is a community college. On top of that, we were surprised when we

went to the Theatre to find that the performance of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

was going to be performed in black box style (This where the audience is seat-

ed ON the stage where the performance takes place….so cool!)

We were able to stay after the performance and ask the director and

actors questions, as well as get a chance to see backstage and the prop shop.

This was definitely a WIN of a field trip. It was really cool to hear all the stu-

dents talk about the performance and how much they loved it on the ride

back.

Also, just before we headed out to Sierra College, ALL of the students

performed their monologues in front of the class, and they were incredible! It

was such a great day of Theatre magic!

SAVA Making a Difference in the Community

A team of 6 participants represented SAVA on May 10 and 11 at the Design

Build program at Cosumnes River College (CRC) . The tiny house was well built

and leveled to perfection. The structure was taken back to the Power Inn loca-

tion where it will be completed then donated to local homeless veterans.

SAVA won this year for Architecture Design Award in the open division. SAVA

is proud to have such creative students demonstrating the skills they have

learned.

Design Build Program (Taken from http://www.srbx.org/design-build-program/)

Following defined criteria provided by the Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange

Education Foundation (SRBXEF), each team completes the challenge of designing

and preparing construction documents for a 96 square-foot structure — which are

submitted for plan review by volunteer community plan-checkers and professional

architects. Any required corrections must be submitted prior to the construction

phase of the project, which take place over a two-day period under supervision and a

primary focus on safety!

Judging is conducted by a panel of design and construction industry professionals by

prescribed criteria — including quality of documentation, planning and design, sched-

uling, project management and conduct, craftsmanship, teamwork and safety.

The same package of materials is provided to each team, yet the creations of the

structures have varied greatly over the years — from sheds to miniature castles and

Victorians, replicas of California missions to barns and even a jail house! Recent

years have brought a focus to Green designs, framing and construction techniques.

Each school is allowed to sell their final product and retain the revenue to support

their school’s program.

NEW in 2017 is the Open Competition. This category will allow schools to add addi-

tional materials to their structure that are not provided by SRBXEF. We anticipate

that creativity and school program needs will lead to green houses, play houses and

even dog houses being constructed.

Many of the participating Design Build teams spend a good part of the year planning

and training for the event, and even though it becomes a competition with pride on

the line, one of the most notable aspects is the enthusiasm of both students and in-

structors — and a definite spirit of mutual support and sharing knowledge among

teams… helping each realize the best of their potential.
