After much pre planning and advertising over many months we held an Auction ofPromises on Saturday 7 May.  After waiting nervously to see whether anyone wasgoing to turn up, we could never have imagined how successful it was going to be.  Itraised an amazing £3,230, after all expenses, including £470 in Gift Aid from ourfriends at HMRC!!  This would not have been such a huge success were it not for :-

·   all the volunteers who helped on the night, with particular thanks to our wonderfulauctioneer Clive Brain, who's voice managed to hold out all night, plus all thosewho helped before in delivering around 1000 flyers

·   all the wonderfully generous Promises, both large and small that were given to theAuction by individuals and local businesses

·   and last but not least the generous bidders on the night who dug very deep intotheir pockets.

A huge thank you to everyone

Saltford Townswomen’s Guild

March was the AGM of SaltfordTownswomens’ Guild.  The Secretary andTreasure both gave their reports and bothof them reported a successful  year.  It hadbeen a happy year with speakers who hadentertained, amused and educated thegroup.  Financially the Guild was still solvent, despite the rise in cost of the hall hirings andthe cost of speakers etc.  March is also thetime for the election of officers andcommittee.   The Treasurer and Secretarywere re-elected but the Chairman felt unableto carry on.  There were no volunteers butthe Officer from the Federation pointed outthat a chairman was not strictly necessaryand a rota of chairmen of could be verysuccessful  The remainder of the morningwas enjoyably filled with refreshments, aquiz and time for chat.

April saw a large number of memberspresent and the chair was taken by Mrs

Affiliated Organisations

Barbara Lees who welcomed members andprovided news of those who were unable toattend. After the business side of themeeting and a break for a chat and coffeemembers settled down to listen to thespeaker from the Federation.   She told ofhow she came to join the movement, theplaces she had visited and how she hadbecome the Federation Chairman.   It wasan enjoyable morning leaving membersknowing more about the movement thanwhen they arrived.

Saltford  Women’s Institute

At our April meeting, Jane Seymour gavea talk entitled “Bath Chaps and PiggiesToes” which gave us an idea of the historyof various foods.

At our May meeting, we discussed the tworesolutions which would be put forward forvoting on at our AGM to be held inLiverpool. After the refreshment breakthree members gave short talks to themeeting. These were `ChildhoodMemories`, `Grumpy Old Women` and‘Being a Mayor’s Guide in Bath`. Everyonefound the talks very entertaining and leftmembers asking for more.

In April we had a fascinating talk andslide show from Richard Grundy. Heused to teach on the island of Tristan daCunha and was able to give us a vividinsight into the way of life of thecommunity living there.

May brought us the Annual Members’Recipe presented by our President,Percy Mellor. He entertained us withsome amusing anecdotes before givingus a tasting of alternative recipes fromwhich we could choose one for ourDecember competition.

We went to Scarborough this year overthe May Day Bank Holiday weekend.Although it clashed with the RoyalWedding, the holiday was a greatsuccess with the weather, hotel andentertainment being first class. Wevisited York and Whitby (via Heart BeatCountry) as well as Scarborough itself.Members of Warmley Wine Circle as wellas friends and guests also accompaniedus and all agreed that it was a wonderfultime.

We now look forward to learning some ofthe aspects of being a Toastmaster andthe celebration of the 40th Anniversaryof our Wine Circle.
