Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time-February 11, 2018

From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco

As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

-Fr. William Dotson

Lent starts this Wednesday. Lent is a time to grow in our re-lationship with God. To help with that, the Church recom-mends three practices for Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiv-ing. -Prayer: The most impor tant practice of Lent is prayer . If I am going to grow in my relationship with God, I need to spend time with Him. There are many ways we can grow in prayer. Perhaps you can attend daily Mass a couple times a week. You can set aside additional time each day for private prayer and reading Scriptures. -Fasting: Fasting refers to giving something up. This is what most people think of when it comes to Lent. We don’t give things up just for the sake of doing it. We give things up because, too often, we become too attached to things and they interfere with our relationship with God and other people. Our fasting is supposed to help us grow in detachment. If giving up chocolate can help you do that, great. But for most of us, it would be better to give up something else. Maybe we can give up something that takes too much of our time (social media, television, smartphones). Or maybe there is something else that we know we are too attached to and we can give that up. I often advise people: what is the one thing that you think, “There is no way I can give that up for forty days?” Give that up. It will be much harder than giving up something like chocolate or soda, but it will also be more rewarding. -Almsgiving: Our prayer and fasting should make us more loving people, and that love should express itself in our actions. Almsgiving is love in action. Our almsgiving may refer to giving money or things to those in need. It can also refer to giving our time or energy to help others. If you have not already done so, please take some time these next few days to pray about what you can do for prayer, fast-ing, and almsgiving this Lent in order for it to be a time of great graces.

During this flu season, we ask parishioners to please use common sense and consideration for their fel-low parishioners. If you are sick, please stay home from Mass. If you are recovering or not feeling well, please refrain from receiving the Precious Blood at communion, shaking hands during the sign of peace, and other behaviors which may transmit illness. Re-member that some of our parishioners, especially infants and the elderly, have weaker immune sys-tems, and all of us can help keep each other healthy.

The parish recently purchased some CD’s from the Augustine Institute and they will be available in the Narthex. Each week, we will be featuring a new CD, which we hope you will want to listen to and then pass on to others. Kindly donate $4.00 for each CD, and this can be accomplished by cash or check. If writing a check , please make it pay-able to SCB Parish.

Curtis Martin, founder of FOCUS and world renowned authority on evangeliza-tion, shares how a personal encounter with Jesus is the key to following him with fidelity, gratitude , and joy. With humor and relatable examples, he also shows how experiencing Christ before evangelizing others is the biblical model witnessed to by the Apostles, and one that is certain to bear fruit in the life of any believer.

Gift bearers At every Mass, members of the faithful bring up the gifts of bread and wine. This is a symbolic gesture, reminding us that the Mass is not just the work of the priest. All of us take part in offering the sacrifice of the Eucharist. Here at St. Charles Borromeo, the role of bringing up the gifts is not assigned. Anyone may do it. On the gifts table is a small statue. If your family would like to bring up the gifts at the offertory, simply take the statue before Mass. Please remember to return the statue at the end of Mass.

Piano There is an old piano in our school gym that we do not use. It was last tuned in 2003 and probably needs tuning, but is otherwise playable. Please con-tact Fr. Dotson if you are interested in the piano.

Leprosy is a disfiguring, infectious skin disease that has been surrounded by many social and religious taboos throughout history. In 1873, the cause of leprosy, also known as Han-sen’s disease, was identified. We now know that leprosy is caused by a bacterial infection. Since the 1940s, medical treatments have been available, and the patient no longer needs to be isolated once long-term treatment has begun. In Jesus’ time, however, religious and social taboos dictated the behavior of those with leprosy and other skin diseases. The Law of Moses provided for the examination of skin diseases by the priests, and if leprosy was identified, the person was declared unclean. People with leprosy lived in isolation from the community. They were instructed to rip their clothes and to announce their presence with loud cries when moving in the community. . In today's Gospel, the man with leprosy took the initiative, approaching Jesus and asking for healing. In doing so, the leper violated the religious customs of the day by approaching a person who was clean. His request to Jesus can be interpreted as a courageous and daring act. The con-fidence of the leper in Jesus' ability to heal him is evident in the words of his request. But his words can also be read as a challenge to Jesus, asking just how far Jesus was willing to extend himself in order to heal someone. While healing the man, Jesus touched him, which also violated established social norms. This is an important sign of the depth of Jesus' compassion for the man and an important statement about Jesus' interpretation of the Law of Moses. Although Jesus touched the leper, he did not break completely with the Law of Moses. He instructed the man not to tell anyone about the cure and told him to present himself to the priests as prescribed by the Law of Moses. The first instruction sounds nearly impossible to honor. Cer-tainly, the man would want to share the good news of his healing, and his quick improvement would require an expla-nation. The second instruction honors the Law of Moses. Mark's Gospel tells us that after this healing, it be-came difficult for Jesus to travel freely. There are several possible explanations for this. There might have been con-cern about the repercussions of Jesus' breach of social and religious norms. In touching the man with leprosy, (cont..)

Gospel Background continued... Jesus made himself unclean. Mark's narrative, however, leads to the conclusion that Jesus' movement was ham-pered by his popularity. Despite his instructions, the cured man spread the word about Jesus' healing power. Even when Jesus was in deserted places, people sought him out in search of his healing.
