MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD TEACHER
As you will know we lost a respected and longstanding teacher last week, due to a heart attack. I would
like to invite you to share with us, in celebration of Mr Glynn Duffield’s life, on Tuesday 13th February at
4pm in the school hall. Already, there are many alumni who are joining us; you may need to be prompt
for a seat!
This week has been Internet Safety Week and students have been reminded of how to ensure their safety
online during assembly, quizzes and in PSHCE. Another vital aspect highlighted is how they use this
freedom in school to benefit others, as well as maximise their own study and potential.
I would like to remind you that we are closed only from Wednesday 14th February to Friday 16th for Half
Term. Two other important points for you to note;
Firstly, half-term reports are out this weekend; they are what is called ‘data shots’ to give an update on
current performance as well as the aspects that contribute to this: class effort, behaviour, homework
effort. The baseline grade is also there to show what your child could achieve; this is only a guide and
with consistent notes, behaviour and homework this could be the floor and they reach the ceiling, as it
were. Secondly, casting decisions for ‘Mama Mia!’ will soon be revealed.
Congratulations go to Caspar Jago Simonsen on coming top in
Africa in Edexcel GCSE Music. Well done – your hard work really
paid off. We are proud of you.
Happy New Year wishes, for next Friday 16th February, go to all of
the Chinese members of the Hillcrest community, as they celebrate
the ‘Year of the Dog’.

INSPIRATION FROM THE HEXAGON
THE POWER OF THOUGHT
‘Saying that you don’t have time to improve your thoughts and your life is like saying you
don’t have time to stop for gas, because you are too busy driving.
Eventually it will catch up with you.
Thoughts are vital, living things, little bundles of energy, if you will.
Most people don’t stop to consider the nature of their thoughts
and yet the quality of your thinking determines the quality of your life.
Your thoughts form your world. …
You truly cannot afford the luxury of even one negative thought.
A worrisome thought is like an embryo: it starts off small but grows and grows. …
Stop feeding what doesn’t serve you.’

PRESIDENT’S AWARD SCHEME
Twenty seven Hillcrest students will be setting off for their Bronze and Silver President's Award
expeditions near Sagana on Friday 23rd February.
I hope the students are getting fit in preparation for the 21km hike for the Bronze expedition and 36km
for the Silver. As well as this, they should be organising their camping and hiking equipment ready for
this big and exciting adventure!

‘Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you’.
Internet Day 2018 Safer Internet Day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to
explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls
upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies,
policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet.
Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day will took place on Tuesday
6th February 2018 with the theme ‘Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with
you’
As a school we are supporting Safer Internet Day 2018. We are joining the global Safer Internet
Day campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology.
To celebrate the day, Hillcrest International School has ensured that all the prescribed contents
are covered within the Tutor groups and PHSCE lessons across the entire school with
parents being trained at the Prep School on e-safety. The necessary materials for both
Parents and pupils have been posted on their respective VLE pages. Parents and Pupils
are advised to visit their VLE pages and access these important resources.
At Hillcrest, we have ensured that our children are safe over the internet through various measures
such as restricting of access to social media during lessons. This has gone a long way in ensuring
that not only are the children protected, but this also enhances their concentration while in school.
Contents that the children are exposed to are filtered through our Firewall to ensure age
appropriateness at all levels.
Will Gardner, Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre and CEO of Childnet, said:
“Safer Internet Day is an opportunity for everyone across the UK and globally to unite for a better
internet. Whether you are a young person, parent, carer, school or organisation, we can all take
positive actions to make the internet a better place. Hundreds of schools and organisations have
pledged their support for Safer Internet Day and it is this collaboration that helps ensure Safer
Internet Day has such a positive impact, reaching 42% of UK children in 2017 and growing year on
year.

SIXTH FORM
Congratulations go to all the senior students for providing leadership during this half of the term in
various activities. A number of them have played their hearts out in the sports field. What a way to end
the half term - mock exams!
All the best wishes go to the MUN delegates who will be involved in the MUN conference at UNON Gigiri
the coming week.
Edexcel GCSE Music Awards; Congratulations go to Casper Jago for attaining the highest mark in
Africa in Edexcel GCSE Music exams in June 2017. Well done and we are proud of you.
AS and A2 Mocks; are scheduled from Monday 12th - Thursday 22nd February. All the students have
received an electronic version of the timetable. I wish all the students the very best with their revision.
Conscientious effort now should pay off in terms of good AS and A2 mock grades. It is a school policy
that Years 12 and 13 students taking examinations in May/June, must sit for the mocks.
Year 13 students need to come to school to sit their papers during this period and they must be in full
school uniform. They will be signed out after every examination if they are going home, but parents
/guardians must make arrangements for their transport since the school buses only run during the
scheduled times. Normal lessons for the Year 13 students will resume on Friday 23rd February.
Any Year 13 student using private transport may only be driven by a parent, guardian or driver.
The school policy remains clear: no student is allowed to drive a car to or from school even if
he/she has a valid driving licence.
For the few Year 12 students taking mocks, lessons are on as usual and there is no study leave.
They may ask their subject teachers to exempt them from class in the morning to revise in the Library if
they have an afternoon examination. Anyone missing lessons is going to be greatly disadvantaged,
because the teachers are carrying on with the syllabus coverage.
Lunch and Transport during Half Term (For Wednesday 14th – Friday 15th February
2018): Please note that there will be school lunch for those who normally have it. A school bus will be
Bringing students to mock examinations leaving Sarit at 7am, Lavington at 7.20am arriving at school at
8am. The return bus will then depart from school at 4pm, arriving at Lavington at 4.30pm and Sarit at
5pm. Please note that there will be no door-to-door bus service during Half Term.
Have a good weekend.

UNIVERSITIES AND CAREERS NEWS
Greetings Hillcrest, and Happy Friday! Congratulations to our many Year 13 students who have
received university acceptances so far. There will be more to come with Canada, the US, and Australia
notices. With mocks around the corner, university planning will be on hold for the time being.
Parents however, are welcome to make appointments to come in and meet with me regarding your
child's university application planning.
Additionally, there are plenty of events coming up that may be of interest. Please get in touch if you
have any questions.
University of Bath - On Tuesday, 20th February, an admissions representative will be visiting from
University of Bath. I have spoken to the Year 12 students who have expressed interest, but if there are
any additional students in other Year groups, they are welcome to come speak to me.
Australian University Fair - Brookhouse School welcomes students in Years 11-13 to attend the
Australian Education Fair on Friday, 2nd March. Approximately fifteen Australian unis will be present to
interact and engage with students. Please let me know if you or your child is interested, and I will send
more information. If there is a big enough group, it may be possible to take a van from Hillcrest.
Newcastle University - In mid-March, a representative from Newcastle will be visiting Hillcrest. It's
probable he will be hosting a debate and presenting on the Law course; please stay tuned for more information!
CIS Nairobi University Fair - On 7th April, universities from around the world (including several from
the US and UK) will be visiting Nairobi for the annual CIS fair. Students will be required to register for
the fair via this link: www.cois.org/nairobifair. A student’s registration creates a personalized bar code
which will be used during the event. Universities will be able to scan a student’s bar code and quickly
collect their information without the need for students to fill in inquiry cards at each university table.
Students will need to arrive with their bar code on a mobile device, or with a printout of their code to
gain access to the fair on 7th April. If you'd like more information about the fair and the attendees, please email me.
To all students wishing to apply to universities in the US:
You will be required by the majority of universities to take the SAT or the ACT.
The deadline to apply for the 10th March SAT is today, 9th February. The deadline to apply for the 14th
April ACT is 9th March. The next SAT is in May, and the next ACT is in June.
I am happy to help with registration for either test.
Good luck to all students taking mocks next week!

KENYA SWIMMING FEDERATION NAIROBI BRANCH LEVEL 1 SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP
Hillcrest swimming team has traditionally attended this swimming meet which has always attracted many
participants from Schools, clubs and colleges. With more than a thousand entries the competition, held on
3rd and 4th February 2018 at Makini School was tough as expected.
As it has been during this term, our students are involved in many sporting activities which might make it
difficult for them to make choices in the event of clashes. Nevertheless, out of possible forty athletes from
both Prep and Secondary, at least fourteen were available to carry our flag. With better quality in our
athletes, the girls finished in third place and the boys in second place overall.
Individually, this is how we scored;
LAYLA Verlaysen: Eight Gold medals in 100m Individual Medley, 50m and 100m Backstroke, 50m and
100m Breaststroke, 50m and 100m Freestyle and in 50mButterfly. She ended up winning overall Victrix
Ludorum.
TALAI Geheb: Five Gold medals in 100m Individual Medley, 50m and 100m Backstroke and in 50m
Breaststroke. Overall Victrix winner.

Butterfly, 100m Breaststroke and in 50m Freestyle and runners up Victrix winner.
DAMON Oosterik: Four Gold in 50m and 100m Backstroke, 200m Individual Medley and in 50m

PEPONI SCHOOL U19 BOYS HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
On Saturday 3rd February, the U19 Boys’ Hockey team played in the Peponi School U19 Boys 11 aside
Hockey Tournament.
The team had a solid defence during the pool stage matches where they didn’t conceded a single goal;
but it is important to note that they also struggled to convert the chances which they created in plenty.
Throughout the tournament, the team only scored a single goal against Premier Academy courtesy of
Dilan Thakkar.
Three teams were tied after the pool matches and so penalty shoot outs was the way to determine the
pool positioning. Roan Carr Hartley scored a spectacular goal commonly known at Hillcrest as “balancing”
before Captain Jayson King’ori also converting his penalty, ensuring that we beat Peponi B. and Gisa
Tunbridge also converted his penalty against St. Andrews School, Turi.
The team then went ahead to meet Greensteds School in the Semi-final match which was again decided
by penalty shoot outs with Roan Carr Hartley and Gisa Tunbridge converting again.
Unfortunately, the team did not win their final match against St. Andrews School, Turi which they lost 0-
1.
Before playing in this tournament, the team had on Friday played against Peponi School at City Park and
they won the match 1-0 courtesy of Dilan Thakkar’s goal.
Earlier in the week, the team played I.S.K. and they beat them 3-2.
I would like to urge the team to keep on working hard in training so as to improve on their ability to score
goals.
Thank you so much
