TRANSCRIPT
Session Outline: • You are going to pretend that your school cook has had a plate of delicious cookies
stolen and the children are going to be detectives to hunt for clues in your outdoor area to work out who the culprit is.
• The children are to work in pairs. Each pair is given a map, a suspect sheet and detective recording sheets (A or B). The children are to locate 6 hidden clue cards in their outdoor learning area.
• When they locate a clue, they are to mark on their map where they found it, what it is, and who it may belong to, (this may be more than one suspect). When they have found all 6 clues they are to try to figure out who stole the cook’s cookies.
• Discuss the clues and who they may have belonged too afterwards. Who do they think the culprit is and why?
Differentiation: HA- Can they write the co-ordinates of each map location where they find each clue? (Detective sheets B) LA- Help & support with map reading and recording. Extension: Can they name all of the human and animal species which use their outdoor learning area and how they interact? What benefits/ problems does this co-inhabitation bring? How could the items dropped (clues) affect the outdoor ecosystem?
Lesson Objectives Children will become familiar with the relationships between human and animal species which use their outdoor learning area. Children will be able to read and follow a map. Resources Simple map of your outdoor area at your school (You may want to draw simple grid-lines with coordinates for MA); Suspects Sheet; School Ecosystem Orienteering Clues Sheet A & B; Detective Sheets A (LA/MA) & B (HA); Leader’s answer sheet (scroll down for all of these); clipboards; pencils. Resource Links Outdoor Skills/ Read 2D Grid Co-ordinates Teaching Points Explain that an ecosystem includes all of the living things (plants, animals and organisms) in a given area, interacting with each other, and also with their non-living environments (weather, soil, buildings). Explain how to read a map & simple coordinates. Key Vocabulary orienteering, clues, map, locate, match, coordinates, eco-system, relationships, humans, animals, co-inhabit, interact.
Risk Assessments: Generic Site RA.
Curriculum Links
Geography: (KS1) Develop knowledge about their locality; Develop basic geographical vocabulary related to physical and human features of their environment; Use simple field work and observational skills to study their local geography and the key physical and human surroundings of their environment. Numeracy: (Y2) Use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement. (Y4) Describe positions on a 2D grid as coordinates in the first quadrant. Science: (Y2) Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other. PE: (KS1) Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
Learning Outcomes
LA - Children will be able to locate their position on a simple map & name some human and animals which interact in their
outdoor area with help.
MA - Children will be able to locate their position on a simple map & name some human and animals which interact in their
outdoor area.
HA - Children will be able to locate their position on a simple map using coordinates. They can name some human and animals which interact in their outdoor area and explain the benefits
and problems of this co-inhabitation.
