For the past several years, the St. Croix River Education District (SCRED) has been conducting five days of problem solving train-ing per year to members of building problem solving teams. This year, we will be offering a condensed version of this training that will be appropriate for building administrators (especially newer ones), grade level team facilitators, instructional coach-es, teacher leaders, and/or anyone needing a “problem-solving refresher.”

In this five-session training cycle participants will learn a system-atic problem solving process used to guide intervention devel-opment and data-based decision making within schools. They will learn how to identify students at risk, methods for analyzing the cause of identified problems, goal setting, intervention de-sign, progress monitoring, strategies for ensuring implementa-tion fidelity, and techniques for evaluating intervention effec-tiveness. Participants will work on a case study with their teams, and have regular opportunities to discuss building level implementation. This course is foundational for those on inter-vention teams as well as staff who provide interventions to students.

The Word Mapping Strategy helps students learn how to predict the meaning of unknown words. Students learn to identify pre-fixes, suffixes, and roots and practice predicting the meaning of words using those parts. They also learn to use four strategic steps to identify the parts of a word, determine the meaning of those parts, and predict the meaning of the word.

Participants will learn to teach the Inference Strategy and the Paraphrasing Strategy.
The Inference Strategy helps students make inferences about information they have read and answer inferential questions. In field tests, students who learned the Inference Strategy earned scores on a standardized reading comprehension test that were on average three grade levels higher after instruction than before.
The Paraphrasing Strategy is designed to help students focus on the most important information in a passage and to improve students' recall of main ideas and specific facts.

Description
Fundamentals in the Sentence Writing Strategy can be used as a developmental writing curriculum or as a quick set of lessons to improve students' understanding of these concepts.
Once students have that basic understanding, they may move on to Proficiency in the Sentence Writing Strategy. Together these components constitute a strategy for recognizing and writing 14 sentence patterns with four types of sentences: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex.
In studies, students who have learned the Sentence Writing Strategy consistently produce written products that contain 100 percent complete sentences and at least 40 percent complicated sentences.
The morning session will cover the Fundamentals and the after-noon session will cover the Proficiency in Sentence Writing. Please indicate if you will attend one or both sessions on your registration.
Outcome
Teachers will be able to teach and implement the Sentence Writing Strategies in order to improve students' ability to write complete and effective sentences.
