Description
This course is a 2-day training on how to use Bar Modeling to help students solve word problems. In Bar Modeling, students learn how to draw a picture to represent the word problem and help them de-termine important variables, the correct operation(s), and to write the answer in a complete sentence. On Day-1 of training, teachers will learn how to draw bar models for addition, subtraction, multipli-cation, and division. On Day-2, teachers will learn how to draw bar models for fractions, rate, ratio, decimals, and percents. The bar mod-eling strategy is especially effective in helping students solve complex, multi-step problems. This intervention also enhances mathematical reasoning. In order to attend Day-2, teachers must attend Day-1. This strategy builds upon itself, teachers and students must begin with addition. Teachers will be given 3-5 word problems to solve independently for each area in the weeks following the training. Additional CEUs are granted for those who complete. Doing these word problems will help solidify the teachers knowledge of bar modeling.
Outcome
Teachers will learn how to use and teach bar modeling to their students to solve word problems and promote mathematical reasoning.

Description
This day of training will provide teachers with many interventions for students on elementary mathematics skills. First, 2 different types of interventions will be presented: fluency building and conceptual. Fluency building interventions will include: cover, copy compare; timed trials, and self-monitoring strategy. Conceptual interventions will in-clude: place value mats, activities/games with manipulatives, drawings and other scaffolds to build students understanding of the skill. Guide-lines will be discussed for determining whether a fluency or conceptual intervention is needed. Second, the focus of the interventions will be on the most common stumbling blocks for students in elementary math: place value, subtraction with regrouping, double-digit multiplication, and division.

SCRED Training Center A - Rush City
Barbara Scierka, Instructor Wednesday, October 29, 2014
8:30 am - 3:30 pm
Description
One of the meaningful differences in math instruction is the teaching of problems like 8 + 6. In countries that are scoring very highly in mathematics this type of problem is taught through building number sense, not as a memorized fact. Activities are used that encourage students to decompose and compose numbers to build the "teens" facts. This session will present many brief activities or games that teachers can use to build student's ability to decompose and compose numbers up to 20. These activities could be used within the general education core instruction to support all students, or be used in an individual or small group setting as an intervention. In addition, a Learning Trajectory of Early Math skills assembled by Doug Clements will be shared. This trajectory breaks down the progression that stu-dents typically follow to build skills such as: counting, addition, geom-etry, etc. The trajectory is spelled out by age of child.
Outcome
Teachers will learn many activities/games to do with students to build their ability to de-compose and compose numbers into the teens values. Teachers will also get a copy of Doug Clements Learning Trajectory of Early Math skills and discuss how they can use this to determine what skills students need to work on and what activities will address the skills.
UDL Guidelines
Universal Design for Learning looks at how all students can access content for learning and then offering a variety of ways for students to express what they have learned. In this session, teachers will learn ways to use manipulatives to make the concepts.

Description
SLD Tough Cases is designed to help teachers of students with specific learning disabilities conduct problem analysis on one or two particular students where it has been difficult to get growth in one of the basic skill areas: reading, writing, or mathematics. This activity has 2 parts.
Part 1: Initial Consultation - Tues, Feb. 10, 2015 During a teacher's prep or open time, the Instructional Services Team will consult with the teacher through ITV, Google, FaceTime, etc. to get some background information on the student of con-cern. The team will ask for additional work samples or diagnostic assessment activities to be conducted.

We will be sharing each teacher's case so that all participants will learn from each other and build capacity for future "tough cases." The intention of this session is to show teachers how to conduct in-depth problem analysis through examples and to model how to use the problem analysis information to make and instructional plan.
