BIG IDEA 1: The Practice of Science A: Scientific inquiry is a multifaceted activity; The processes of science include the formulation of

scientifically investigable questions, construction of investigations into those questions, the collection of appropriate data, the evaluation of the meaning of those data, and the communication of this evaluation.

B: The processes of science frequently do not correspond to the traditional portrayal of "the scientific

method." C: Scientific argumentation is a necessary part of scientific inquiry and plays an important role in the

generation and validation of scientific knowledge. D: Scientific knowledge is based on observation and inference; it is important to recognize that these

are very different things. Not only does science require creativity in its methods and processes, but also in its questions and explanations.

Describe what you see.

7

Make a list of observations on the apple.

What are Observations?

Looking closely at something.

Using any of your five senses to collect information.

Using measurement tools to collect information.

8

What are Inferences?

When we bring our past experience into making a judgment based on an observation, it is an Inference.

For instance, you may observe that a person is running from a gas station. That may cause you to infer that they robbed it and are trying to get away. It is easy to infer incorrectly so we need to get all the facts.

Practicing Science: What are observations?

Five Senses

• Sight - Looks• Touch - Feels• Hearing – Sounds when dropped• Odor – Smells • Tastes

Qualitative Observations

Measurement Tools

• Ruler• Tape measure• Graduated Cylinder• Balance• Gram mass pieces

Quantitative Observations

A way of looking carefully at something to get a clear answer to a question

OBSERVATIONS AND INFERENCES

It is important for students to understand the difference between observation and inference.

Students should also learn to make good observations and inferences, and understand the role that observations and inferences play in the development of scientific knowledge.

Is it an Observation or an Inference?

Here is a slideshow of 13 examples. Make 1 observation and 1 inference on each picture.

Science is …A Body of Knowledge

To observe is to look closely at something using any of the five senses and/or measurement tools. To infer is to use observations to reach a conclusion based on evidence. (what you think)

A Set of Methods

or Processes

Make observation.

Make inferences.

Distinguish between observations and inferences.

15

A Way of KnowingScientific knowledge is based on observing & inferring.
