SCOUTS AUSTRALIA (VICTORIAN BRANCH) ROLE DESCRIPTION Section Leader Page 1 27 th September 2020 Title Joey Scout Leader (including Assistant Joey Scout Leader) Cub Scout Leader (including Assistant Cub Scout Leader) Scout Leader (including Assistant Scout Leader) Venturer Leader (including Assistant Venturer Leader) Reports to Group Leader Accountable to District Section Leaders Unit Councils Direct Reports None Measurement Membership, Quality and Participation. This is a voluntary position. Scouts Victoria is a Child Safe organisation. Scouts Victoria is inclusive of all, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, religion, or abilities and does not tolerate any form of harm, abuse or neglect. Section Leaders are at the forefront at the delivery of our youth program. They are responsible to implement the scaled approach of youth leading and adult supporting, to run exciting, challenging program in line with the Scouts Australia Youth Program. Section Leaders help deliver to the Aims of Scouting, that help our youth members grow in Areas of Personal Growth ensuring programs are delivered using the Scout Method. Scouts Victoria aims for best practice while meeting obligations to Scouts Australia (National), Asia- Pacific Region of WOSM (APR) and World / WOSM (The World Organisation of the Scouting Movement). PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Within the section Establish, support and maintain the Unit Council, through the use of the Patrol System (working in small teams) empowered by Plan>Do>Review (a planning, activity and review cycle) Support youth members on their personal progression journey through the Achievement Pathways. Encourage, instruct and guide youth members in skill development and leadership Develop and maintain relationships with other sections in the group Provide appropriate supervision and risk management for the weekly program delivery Create a climate of inclusivity and doing your best

2. Quality program delivery • Work collaboratively with youth to ensure balanced, quality and engaging programs which

meet their developmental needs and entice full participation. • Ensures that Scout Method and youth leading and adult supporting is the basis of the program • Support district, region and state activities • Supporting transition (formerly linking) between sections, to encourage the complete journey

through Scouts.

3. Membership • Be a member of the Group Council (non-assistant Leaders) • Be a member of the District Section Council (known as Wandarrah - Joeys, Seeonee - Cubs,

Mindari - Scouts, District Venturer Council) understanding the significance of the positive learning environment and communications pathway it provides.

4. Collaboration, Support and Engagement with other Adults

• Assist youth members family members to be prepared for their youth member's participation in Scouts including preparation like equipment, clothing, and at home activities.

• Working with all other leaders in your group constructively to support the delivery of Scouting • Recognise and collaborate with District/Region/State Leaders to enhance program delivery and

provide quality control to our delivery of Scouting to youth members. 5. Communication

• Communicating with youth members using a variety of methods in a positive, encouraging and engaging manner.

• Regular and timely communication with parents regarding programs and upcoming events.

ATTITUDE, SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED Attitude

1. Be enthusiastic with a strong commitment to Scouting Principles and the importance of the Scout method in delivering the program.

2. Demonstrate that youth are at the centre of everything we do with a youth focussed approach. Appropriate support and role model behaviour is paramount in everything we do.

3. Have a commitment towards the importance of activities and the ‘out’ in Scouting. 4. Be inclusive in leadership style encouraging their teams to excel. 5. Be respectful of all their team accepting individual differences as a resource. 6. Uphold and demonstrate a commitment to the implementation of Child Safe Scouting.

Skills

1. Be able to motivate, lead, communicate with and motivate adult leaders and work harmoniously to grow the program.

2. Have planning, monitoring and delegation skills.

1. Have an understanding of Scout training requirements. 2. Have a sound knowledge and strong commitment to the aims, objectives and philosophy of the

Scout Movement, its policies and procedures and have a clear understanding of the methods which make it distinctive from other youth organizations.

3. Understand and demonstrate the role and responsibilities of a Section Leader and have a commitment to that role.

4. Have completed Scouting Essentials and Scouting Adventure training within twelve months and Scouting Leadership training within two years of appointment.
