Singapore Construction Productivity Week 2013 Launch Ceremony of Integrated Construction Precast Hub (ICPH)

29 July 2013, SEF Spacehub @ Kaki Bukit Road 4

The first event for the Singapore Construction Productivity Week was the launch of the SEF Sustainable Prefabrication Architectural Construction and Engineering (S.P.A.C.E) Hub by SEF Construction Pte Ltd. Comprising a 5-storey production factory, the ICPH is equipped with automated precast production technology and efficient storage cum inventory control systems. SMS Lee Yi Shyan was the guest of honour.

Opening of the SCPW 2013 by Guest-of-Honour,

Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister and

Minister for Finance

In his opening address, Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Tharman acknowledged the challenges of the current tight labour market and increased foreign worker levies. However, he urged the built environment sector to adopt new technologies such as Building Information Modelling and pre-fabricated pre-finished volumetric construction, as well as enhance capabilities, so that the sector can progress to a new level.

DPM’s  full  speech  is  available  here.

Singapore Construction Productivity Week 2013 BCA Pavilion

31 July – 2 August 2013, BuildTech Asia Exhibition 2013 The BCA Pavilion at the BuildTechAsia Exhibition served as a platform to reach out to the industry and raise awareness on ways to improve construction productivity

Several game-changing technologies were exhibited, such as Cross-Laminated Timber, Robotic Fabrication and

3D Fabrication.

The café-cum-networking hub at the BCA Pavilion served as an avenue for interested parties to consult BCA on the Construction Productivity and Capability Fund (CPCF)

and BCAA courses.

By using the tablet, visitors could learn about six key technologies, namely Pre-fabricated Pre-finished Volumetric Construction (PPVC), Prefabricated M&E system, Prefabricated Bathroom Unit (PBU), Biometric System, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) System and Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Technologies showcased at the BCA Pavilion

At the BCA Pavilion, visitors could also click through the different layers of a BIM model - the structural layer to see the columns and beams, M&E layer to see the pipework and cable tray within the wall and ceilings, and lastly architectural layer to see the wall finishes and furniture.

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) has been in use in Europe for more than 15 years as a structural component. The NUS School of Design and Environment has also been researching on this building material. A few of the graduate students’ projects, incorporating CLT in the buildings, were showcased at the BCA Pavilion.

New Frontier Technologies ~ Robotic Fabrication

Another interesting feature was the towering 3-metre model formed by cardboards and glue was fabricated by a robotic arm at the Future Cities Laboratory under the Singapore-ETH Centre.

Mr. Michael Budig, Senior Researcher and Module Coordinator of Future Cities Laboratory, showed DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam some examples of building components that were assembled by robots in pre-programmed patterns. An example is the non-standardised brick façade at the Gantenbein Vineyard in Fläsch (Switzerland).

New Frontier Technologies ~ 3D Fabrication

A 3D printer can transform a digital model into a 3D object. The colourful models on the shelf display were sample products printed from the 3D printer. Similarly, building component such as concrete panel can also be printed. It is called 3D fabrication, which is achieved by depositing concrete layer by layer.

Singapore Construction Productivity Week 2013 Skilled Builders Competition

31 July 2013, Singapore Expo Hall 4

Together with SCAL, BCA organised the Skilled Builders Competition.    This  is  part  of  BCA’s  efforts  to  rebrand  and  promote construction as a rewarding career by giving

91 participants from 19 local construction companies participated in the

third edition of Skilled Builders Competition on 31 July 2013

opportunities for tradesmen to showcase their skills in higher values.
