NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS FEBRUA RY JANUARY 4 7 , 2015 6 F F rom the Pastor Pastor Last Sunday we watched a video on DSF (Diocesan Services Fund) as it kicked off in the archdiocese last weekend. We saw some of the more than 60 ministries that are being supported by DSF like the home for the aged, hospital and prison chaplaincy, seminarians and deacons’ training and education. This Sunday we will be asked to make our commitment to the DSF. Our parish goal this year is $105,000 up by $6,000 compared to last year. F From the PastorPastor Last Sunday we watched a video on DSF (Diocesan Services Fund) as it kicked off in the archdiocese last weekend.

But with everyone giving their share, I’m sure that we will be able to meet this goal as we did last year. And so even as I thank you, I encourage again everyone to be involved in the program and respond generously.

May our response be a part of the greater response to the even greater invitation of the Lord to each one of us in the readings today– to be his messenger – messenger of his love, compassion, forgiveness, mercy, peace, joy and hope. “Whom shall I send?” asked the Lord and Isaiah responded, “Here I am, send me.” (1st reading)

So it was with Paul in the second reading today. Called to be an apostle through a dramatic conversion, he preached to the Gentiles. And in the gospel, we see Peter responding to Jesus’ invitation to be “fishers of men.” As the gospel concludes, “when they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.”

In these episodes of call and response, we see God who is making the call in his divinity and majesty. “I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne …” Of course we all know about the conversion of Paul – a blinding light and a voice that asked, “Why are you persecuting me?” And Peter saw divine power in the great catch of fish.

But at the same time we see the feeling of unworthiness on the part of the ones being called. “I am a man of unclean lips” (1st reading); “not fit to be called apostle” (2nd reading); “depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man.” (Gospel)But he Lord doesn’t mind. He looks into the heart – its readiness, openness and faith. And he starts from there. As someone said, “God does not call the qualified; he qualifies the called.”

Indeed, we are called to be his messengers, unworthy as we may feel. But even more, as witnesses. And that’s the bigger invitation, the bigger call – the call to holiness which is what Lent is about, which starts this Ash Wednesday, “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”

Your brother and friend, Fr. Roland

A little ticklerA preacher whose sermon had gone done very badly asked a friend afterwards, “How would you have delivered that sermon?”“Under an assumed name,” he replied.

In this first column of the year I wish you all a prosperous and grace-filled New Year. I pray that as the past year is

gone, so may we let go of pains and hurts or whatever negatives that hold us back and move on forward with hope

and resolve.

Last January 1 was the feast of Mary, the Mother of God. The church invites us to entrust ourselves to her who

brought the Savior into the world, the God who became like us so that we can become like him. We pray that through her

intercession and guidance, we too will be able to incarnate the Word in our daily lives.

January 1 is also the World Day of Peace. In his message Pope Francis addressed the scourge of modern slavery and human trafficking. Entitled “No longer slaves but brothers and sisters”, he speaks about the need to acknowledge and respect human dignity, freedom and autonomy for human

development. But tragically, he writes, “the growing scourge of man’s exploitation by man gravely damages the life of

communion and our calling to forge interpersonal relations marked by respect, justice and love.”

Which is precisely what Christmas is about. God became man to reconcile us to God in whose image we were created, but then was disfigured by sin, and with one another from

whom we have been alienated. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” was definitively answered ‘Yes’ by Jesus’ assuming our sins,

a debt which we owed but could not pay.

This is the message of the Epiphany of the Lord which we are celebrating today. Through a star he was manifested to

the magi who were Gentiles (non-Jews, and therefore outside the chosen people who believed that salvations was

exclusively theirs). As the first reading proclaims, “Nations shall walk by your light.” And as St. Paul says in the second reading, “it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and

prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body and copartners in the promise of

Christ Jesus through the gospel.”

May we respond to the call of Pope Francis to ‘globalize fraternity, not slavery or indifference, to recognize in every other person a brother or sister in our human family, and to

acknowledge his or her intrinsic dignity in truth and freedom.’ May the ‘star’ of our conscience and the basic goodness inherent in all of us lead us to the real Star, the

Light that dispels the dark. Then we will truly have a New year.

Your brother and friend,Fr. Roland

A little tickler (New Year prayer)I pray that everyone will gain 50 pounds. I don’t want to lose.

THANK YOU LORD…

Lord, I thank you for this year. I thank you for all the little things you have done for me, for giving me parking places when I needed them and for finding my keys when I misplaced them. I thank you, Lord for my family and the friends you have placed in my life. Help me love them more. Show me how to draw my loved ones who have gone astray back to you.

12/31/2014)
