These lessons are intended to direct our minds to the instructions Godhas given us regarding the health work so that we may hear the Spirit ofGod speaking to US as He calls us to a higher standard and spiritualitythat we may be able to receive the rewards of the overcomer. Thehealth message must go hand in hand with the gospel.

"When properly conducted, the health work is an entering wedge, making a way for other truths to reach the heart. When the third angel'smessage is received in its fulness, health reform will be given its placein the councils of the Conference, in the work of the church, in thehome, at the table, and in all the household arrangements. Then theright arm will serve and protect the body.

"But while the health work has its place in the promulgation of thethird angel's message, its advocates must not in any way strive to makeit take the place of the message. . . ." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 327.

This is even more important as the time draws near for the messageto swell into the loud cry, and the final preparation is being made toreceive the latter rain.THE GENERAL CONFERENCE COMMITTEE

Theortj and Practice InseparableAll who study the word are represented as eating the word, feeding

on Christ.... Even as the bodily necessities must be supplied daily, 80the word of God must be daily studied-eaten, and digested, and practiced. This sustains the nourishment, to keep the soul in health. The neglect ofthe word meqns starvation to the soul. The word describes the blessedman as one meditating day and night upon the truths of God's word. Weall are to feast upon the word of God. The relation of the word to thebeliever is a vital matter. Appropriating the word to our spiritual necessitiesis the eating of the leaves of the tree of life that are for the healing ofthe nations. Study the word, and practice the word, for it is your life.-Ellen G. White Letter 4, 1902.Sabbath School Lesson Quarterly, "Our Health Message," for October to December, 1958,is published by the Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement General Conference andprinted by the Reformation Herald Publishing Association (a corporation of the SeventhDay Adventist Reform Movement) at Sacramento, California, United States of America.Mailing Address: P. Lesson No. 1 - Sabbath, October 4, 1958.HEALTH REFORM TO BE A SPIRITUAL BLESSING

Key text; "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not liveby bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouthof God." Matthew 4: 4.

    4. What was expected of the people in ancient times, and how doesthis apply to those who live in the antitypical day of atonement?Leviticus 23: 28,29; Isaiah 58: 38.NOTE: " . . . I t is not the wicked world, but those whom the Lorddesignates as 'My people: that are reproved for their transgressions. He declares further, 'Yet they seek Me daily, and delight to know Myways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinancesof their God.' Here is brought to view a class who think themselvesrighteous, and appear to manifest great interest in the service of God:but the stern and solemn rebuke of the Searcher of hearts proves themto be trampling upon the divine Precepts." -Great Controversy, p.: 452.B. God's Plan.5. According to Peter, what is Christ to His followers? I Peter 2: 21-23.NOTE: "His first test was on the same point where Adam failed. Itwas through temptations addressed to the appetite that Satan hadovercome a large portion of the human race, and his success had madehim feel that the control of this fallen planet was in his hands. But inChrist he found one who was able to resist him, and he left the fieldof battle a conquered foe." -Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene,p. 16.6. NOTE: "Many who profess godliness do not inquire into the ' reasonof Christ's long period of fasting and suffering in the wilderness. Hisanguish was not so much from the pangs of hunger as from His senseof the fearful' result of ,the indulgence of appetite and passion uponthe race. He knew that appetite would be man's idol and would leadhim to forget God, and would stand directly in the way of his salvation."-Redemption; or the Temptation of Christ, p. 50.7. What great truth did Christ teach concerning the relation betweenour temporal and physical needs? Luke 4: 4.NOTE: ". . . And our only hope of regaining Eden is through firm selfcontrol. I f the power of indulged appetite was so strong upon the race, that, in order to break ,its hold, the divine Son of God, in man's behalf, had to endure a fast of nearly six weeks, what a work is hefore theChristian! Yet, however great the struggle, he may overcome. By thehelp of that divine power which withstood the fiercest temptations thatSatan could invent, he, too, may be entirely successful in his warfarewith evil, and at last may wear the victor's crown in the kingdom ofGod." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 167.8. And, onthe other hand, those who have been reached by the presentation ofScripture truth, are in a position where the conscience may be arousedupon the subject of health. . . . " -Counsels on Health, p. 22.9. What is needed in the lives of those who would become thesons and daughters of God? John 1: 12.

This work bears thesignature of heaven, and will open doors for the entrance of other.precious truths. There is room for all to labor who will take hold ofthis work intelligently." -Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 112, 113.

    12. Why did the Testimonies refer to health reform as the right armand not the left? Why is "the wedge" a suitable symbol for thiswork?ANSWER: ". . . The right arm of the body of truth is to Le constantlyactive, constantly at work, and God will strengthen it. But it is notto be made the body. At the same time the body is not to say to thearm, 'I have no need of thee." The body has need of the arm in orderto do active work. Both have their appointed work, and each willsuffer great loss if worked independently of the other." -TestimollitJs,vol. 6, p. 288.

"I am intensely interested in the education of medical students asmissionaries. This is the very means of introducing the troth whereotherwise it would not find an entrance."I can see in the Lord's providence that the medical missionary workis to be a great entering wedge, whereby the diseased soul may bereached." -Counsels on Health, p. 535.

Y., Dec. 25, 1865,I was shown that our Sabbath-keeping people have been negligent inacting up0n' the light which God has given in regard to the healthreform; that there is yet a great Iwork before us; and that, as a people,we have been too backward to follow in God's opening providence, ashe has chosen to lead us." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 483.7. But they are determined to obtainrelief at once, and take powerful drugs, prescribed by physicians. . . ."Drugs never cure disease. They only change the form and location.

What fearful warning was given against disobedience? Deuteronomy28: 21,22.NOTE: "They are withholding, and robbing God, for they are fearfulthey shall come to want. They dare not trust God. but the entire being is under the superVlSlon of God. 'Ye are God'shusbandry; ye are God's building: In God we live, and move, and haveour being. to conform to this world? Amos 3: 3.NOTE: ". . . The heavenly principles that distinguish those who areone with Christ from those who are one with the world have becomeindistinguishable. The professed followers of Christ are no longer aseparate and peculiar people. The line of demarcation is indistinct. The people are subordinating themselves to the world, to its practices, its customs, its selfishness. The church has gone over to the world intransgression of the law when the world should have come to the churchin obedience to the law. Daily the church is being converted to theworld:' -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 315, 316.2. Why did the Lord call His people out of Egypt? Psalm 105: 4345;Acts 7: 7.

NOTE: "Many who profess to believe the Testimonies live in neglectof the light given. The dress reform is treated by some with greatindifference, and by others with contempt, because there is a crossattached to it. For this cross 1 thank God. It is just what we need todistinguish and separate God's commandment-keeping people from theworld. The dress reform answers to us as did the ribbon of blue toancient Israel. The proud, and those who have no love for sacred truth, which will separate them from the world, will show it by their works. . . ."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 171.6. from the vital organs, should be especially guarded from cold by abundantclothing. I t is impossible to have health when the extremities are habit-ually cold; for i f there is too little blood in them there will be too muchin other portions of the body. Perfect heal th requires a perfect circulation;but this cannot be had, while three or four times as much clothing isworn upon the body, where the vital organs are situated, as upon thefeet and limbs." -Counsels on Health, pp. 92, 93.C. today and those of the days before the flood? Matthew 24: 3739.NOTE: H. . God did not con'demn the antediluvians for eating and drink-ing; . . .

HA similar condition of things exists now. That which is lawful initself is carried to excess. Appetite is indulged without restraint. Professedfollowers of Christ are today eating and drinking with the drunken, whiletheir names stand honored in church records. Intemperance benumbs themoral and spiritual powers, and prepares the way for indulgence ofthe lower passions. , . ." -:-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 101.12. What does the.' Lord "see among His people that is particularlydispleasing to Him?ANSWER: H. . . Jesus answeredthem, 'Because of your unbelief! . . .' Their unbelief, that shut themout from deeper sympathy with Christ, and the carelessness with whichthey regarded the sacred work committed to them, had caused theirfailure in the conflict with the powers of darkness.

"In order to succeed in such a conflict they must come to the workin a different spirit. Their faith must be strengthened by fervent prayerand fasting, and humiliation of heart . They must be emptied of self, andbe filled with the Spirit and power of God. Earnest, persevering supplication to God in faith-faith that leads to entire dependence upon God,and unreserved consecration to His work-can alone avail to bring menthe Holy Spirit's aid in the battle against principalities and powers, the rulers of the darkness of this world, and wicked spirits in high places."-Desire of Ages, pp. 429-431.5.
