FOR WOR
nd I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of
truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not,
neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you,
and shall be
in
you John 14:16, 17 .
Christ, the Great Teacher, had an infinite variety of subjects
from which to choose, but the one upon which He dwelt most
largely was the endowment of the Holy Spirit. What great things
He predicted for the church because of this endowment. Selected
Messages book 1 p. 156.
Although the Holy Spirit is a mystery to human understand
ing, there is
no
doubt that His work is a reality. Through the Holy
Spirit we can rightly understand the Word of God, and be led to
discern and confess our sins.
is also through Him that we are
born again and can overcome sin. He maintains our spiritual life,
and gives us power for the carrying through and accomplishment
of the gospel work. Indeed, He is the best gift that the Saviour
has promised to all of His followers.
Since this subject
is
of such great importance, we should
in-
tensively engage ourselves in deep consideration and careful in-
vestigation of it various aspects. Thus the Sabbath school lessons
are not to be superficially skimmed through at the last minute
in order to merely grasp at quick answers to the questions.
Rather, they should be diligently and prayerfully studied each
day. This way, the instruction will not remain a dead theory, but
instead will live and bring forth fruitfulness in our Christian ex
perience. The Spirit of Prophecy recommends:
Let
the Sabbath-school lesson be learned, not by a hasty
glance
at
the lesson scripture on Sabbath morning, but by careful
study for the next week on Sabbath afternoon, with daily review
or illustration during the week. Thus the lesson will become fixed
in the memory, a treasure never to be wholly lost. -Education pp.

Schools

In the final work of reformation education-especially education for the work of
the
Lord is
one of the greatest needs. Regrettably not as much has been done in this
line as s required. Plans have existed but the ability to carry out those plans has not
always been within immediate reach.
Some time ago the General Conference committee decided that the establishment
of a missionary school in Europe should be our first priority in the field of education
but only n 1989-1990 was it possible to make a start. From mid-November 1989
through mid-June 1990 a seminar was held n Graz Austria as an experimental step
towards the realization of this decision. Invitations were sent out n due time to our
unions and fields in Europe and nine students from different European countries
were enrolled.
It had been the plan of the school board to use English as the medium of educa
tion but right from the beginning it became evident that that idea was not prac
ticable because only a few of the students knew enough English to dispense with
translation. So they used German which was understood by the majority of the
students.
The
seminar in Graz brought to our attention a fact that was not clearly
understood
before the
language barrier n Europe.
s
very difficult or practically
impossible to use one common language as a medium of education and the use of
translation makes the work more difficult.
Now that countries which were under restrictions are opening their doors and
granting religious liberty the brethren
n
these countries are asking the General on-
ference Council to assist them in starting their own schools. This means that by the
help of God more than one school will possibly have to be established n Europe in
the near future.
Many brethren will be delighted to hear that didactic materials for missionary
schools are presently being prepared by the General Conference committee and will
be supplied to our unions and fields before long. And wherever and whenever possi
ble personal assistance will also be rendered n the establishment of such schools.
When the seminar was held n Graz financial aid as well as other forms of help
came from the General Conference from the church in different countries and also
from individual members. In fact even the erection of the building
at
Graz had been
made possible through the generosity of contributors to the Thirteenth Sabbath offer
ing during the third quarter of 1988. We take this opportunity to thank all those who
extended a helping hand both toward the construction of the mission house and n
behalf of the seminar.
For the project now n
view to
establish more than one school in
urope
we
need the help of all brethren and friends around the world. Therefore we appeal to
people everywhere: Please think about this project and make preparations through
out the entire quarter to bring a generous gift for the Special Project Offering at the
end of the quarter. God will certainly bless the donors and their gifts

1. What
does
the
True
Witness say concerning the spiritual condition
of
the
last
church? Revelation
3:14 15.
Why
are
they in
this
condition? Revela-
tion 3:17.
The Laodicean message applies to the people of God who profess to believe
present truth.
The
greater part are lukewarm professors, having a name but no
zeal.
They profess to love the truth, yet are deficient in Christian fervor and devo
tion. They dare not give up wholly and run the risk of the unbeliever, yet they are un
willing to die to self and follow out closely the principles of their faith. - estimonies

2. What
will

who

What advice does the faithful

Revelation
3:18.
Again and again has the voice from heaven addressed you. Will you obey this
voice? Will you heed the counsel of the TrueWitness to seek the gold tried in the fire,
the white raiment, and the eyesalve? The gold is faith and love, the white raiment is
the righteousness of Christ, the eyesalve is that spiritual discernment which will
enable you to see the wiles of Satan and shun them, to detect sin and abhor it, to see
truth and obey it. - estimonies vol.

The Lord is more willing to give the Holy Spirit to us than parents are to give

the Spirit of God takes possession of the heart it transforms the life. Sin
ful thoughts are put away evil deeds are renounced; love humility and peace take
the place of anger envy and strife. Joy takes the place of sadness and the counte
nance reflects the light of heaven. No one sees the hand that lifts the burden or be

Angels attend Joseph and Mary as they journey from their home
in
Nazareth to
the city of David.
The
decree of imperial Rome for the enrollment of the peoples of her
vast dominion has extended to the dwellers among the hills of Galilee. As
in
old time
Cyrus was called to the throne of the world s empire that he might set free the captives
of the Lord, so Caesar Augustus
is
made the agent for the fulfillment of God s purpose
in
bringing the mother of Jesus to Bethlehem. She
is
of the lineage of David, and the
Son of David must be born
in
David s city. TheDesireof ges p 44.
2.
What did John the
Baptist announce about
the
work of
Jesus?
Matthew
3: 11.
In
the time
of
John the Baptist, Christ was about to appear as the revealer of the
character of God. His very presence would make manifest to men their sin. Only as they
were willing to be purged from sin could they enter into fellowship with Him. Only the
pure
in
heart could abide
in
His presence. Thus the Baptist declared God s message to
Israel. -

The
Messiah was to be hid

God, and God was to be revealed in the character
of His Son. -Ibid. p 693.
4. At which opportunity did
Jesus
indicate
the fulfillment of these prophecies?
Luke 4:16-21.
Jesus stood before the people as a living expositor of the prophecies concerning
Himself. Explaining the words He had read, He spoke of the Messiah as a reliever of
the oppressed, a liberator of captives, a healer of the afflicted, restoring sight to the
blind, and revealing to the world the light of truth. His impressive manner and the
wonderful import of His words thrilled the hearers with a power they had never felt be-
fore. The tide of divine influence broke every barrier down. - The

6. What
occurred at the
beginning of His Messiahship, and for what purpose?
Mark 1:12,
13.
When
Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted, He was led by the Spirit
of God. He did not invite temptation. He went to the wilderness to be alone, to con
template His mission and work. By fasting and prayer He was to brace Himself for
the bloodstained path He was to
travel. -Selected

The
prince of this world cometh, said Jesus, and hath nothing in Me (John
14:30).
There was
in
Him nothing that responded to Satan s sophistry. He did not
consent to sin. Not even by a thought did He yield to temptation. So it may be with us.
Christ s humanity was united with divinity; He was fitted for the conflict by the
in-
dwelling of the Holy Spirit. And He came to make us partakers of the divine nature.
So
long as we are united to Him by faith, sin has no more dominion over us. God
reaches for the hand of faith in us to direct it to lay fast hold upon the divinity of
Christ, that we may attain to perfection of character. - The

With
what were the words of Chris t permeated? John 6:63.
The life of Christ that gives life to the world is in His word. was by His word
that Jesus healed disease and cast out demons; by His word He stilled the sea and
raised the dead; and the people bore witness that His word was with power. He spoke
the word of God as He had spoken through all the prophets and teachers of the Old
Testament. The whole Bible is a manifestation
of
Christ and the Saviour desired to
fix the faith of His followers on the word. When His visible presence should be
withdrawn the word must be their source of power. -

9. What essential truth did Jesus teach Nicodemus?
John 3 :5 .
Thursday
July
Jesus laid bare the foundation principles of truth. He said to Nicodemus It is
not theoretical knowledge you need so much as spiritual regeneration. You need not
to have your curiosity satisfied but to have a new heart. You must receive a new life
from above before you can appreciate heavenly things. Until this change takes place
making all things new it will result

necessary
in order for
a
pe rson to become
a

Ezekiel 36:26

Man
needs a power outside of and beyond himself to restore him to the
likeness of God and enable him to do the work of God; but this does not make the
human agency unessential. Humanity lays hold upon divine power Christ dwells
in
the heart by faith; and through cooperation with the divine the power of man be
comes efficient for
good. The sir of

For what
situation
was Jesus preparing His disciples? John 13:33.
[John 13:33 quoted.]
The
disciples could not rejoice when they heard this.
Fear
fell upon them.
They
pressed close about the Saviour. Their Master and Lord, their
beloved Teacher and Friend, He was dearer to them than life.
To
Him they had looked
for help in all their difficulties, for comfort in their sorrows and disappointments. Now
He was to leave them, a lonely, dependent company. Dark were the forebodings that
filled their hearts. The sir of ges

2. What comforting promise
did
Jesus give to His disciples? John 14:16-18;
16:7.
Before offering Himself as the sacrificial victim, Christ sought for the most
essential and complete gift to bestow upon His followers, a gift that would bring
within their reach the boundless resources of grace. [John 14:16-18, margin quoted.]
Before this the Spirit had been
in
the world; from the very beginning of the
work of redemption He had been moving upon men s hearts. But while Christ was on
earth, the disciples had desired no other helper. Not until they were deprived of His
presence would they feel their need of the Spirit, and then He would come. -

4. For what important service was the Holy Spiri t promised to the believers?
John 16:13.
Jesus
saw that [the disciples] did not lay hold of the real meaning of His words.
He compassionately promised that the Holy Spirit should recall these sayings to their
minds. And He had left unsaid many things that could not be comprehended by the
disciples. These also would be opened to them by the Spirit. The Spirit was to quicken
their understanding, that they might have an appreciation of heavenly things. -

THE NECESSARY HELP FOR

5. What enabled the disciples to be living witnesses? Acts 1:8.
Tuesday
July 14
The
Saviour knew that no argument, however logical, would melt hard hearts
or break through the crust of worldliness and selfishness. He knew that His disciples
must receive the heavenly endowment; that the gospel would be effective only as it
was proclaimed by hearts made warm and lips made eloquent by a living knowledge
of Him who is the way, the truth, and the life.
The
work committed to the disciples
would require great efficiency; for the tide of evil ran deep and strong against them. A
vigilant, determined leader was in command of the forces of darkness, and the
fol-
lowers of Christ could battle for the right only through the help that God, by His
Spirit, would give them. - The cts

What
special ability did
the
Lord confer on
the disciples? Acts 2:3 4.
The
Holy Spirit, assuming the form of tongues of fire, rested upon those as
sembled. This was an emblem of the gift then bestowed on the disciples, which enabled
them to speak with fluency languages with which they had heretofore been unacquainted.
The appearance of fire signified the fervent zeal with which the apostles would labor
and the power that would attend their work. - The cts

6. What miracle
showed that
God was
leading
them?
Acts
2:5-12.
Every known tongue was represented by those assembled. This diversity of
languages would have been a great hindrance to the proclamation of the gospel; God
therefore in a miraculous manner supplied the deficiency of the apostles. The Holy
Spirit did for them that which they could not have accomplished for themselves in a
lifetime. They could now proclaim the truths of the gospel abroad, speaking with ac-
curacy the languages of those for whom they were laboring. This miraculous gift was
a strong evidence to the world that their commission bore the signet of
Heaven.

who should succeed them as His ministers, the charge of handing His gospel down

The Saviour s commission to the disciples included all the believers. It includes
all believers in Christ to the end of time. It is a fatal mistake to suppose that the work
of saving souls depends alone on the ordained minister. All to whom the heavenly in-

are ordained to work for the salvation of their fellow men. For this work the church
was established, and all who take upon themselves its sacred vows are thereby pledged

7. What
was necessary
when the
church became
larger? Acts
6:1,
2.
The
disciples of Jesus had reached a crisis
in
their experience. Under the wise
leadership of the apostles, who labored unitedly
in
the power of the Holy Spirit, the
work committed to the gospel messengers was developing rapidly.
The
church was
continually enlarging, and this growth in membership brought increasingly heavy
burdens upon those in charge.
No
one man, or even one set of men, could continue to
bear these burdens alone, without imperiling the future prosperity of the church.
There was necessity for a further distribution of the responsibilities which had been
borne so faithfully by a few during the earlier days of the church.
The
apostles must
now take an important step in the perfecting of gospel order in the church by laying
upon others some of the burdens thus far borne by themselves.
Summoning a meeting of the believers, the apostles were led by the Holy Spirit
to outline a plan for the better organization of all the working forces of the church.
The
time had come, the apostles stated, when the spiritual leaders having the over
sight of the church should be relieved from the task of distributing to the poor and
from similar burdens, so that they might be free to carry forward the work of
preaching the gospel. - The cts of the postles pp

Who
became a powerful instrument in

part),
8,
10.
Stephen, the foremost of the seven deacons, was a man of deep piety and broad
faith. Though a Jew by birth, he spoke the Greek language and was familiar with the
customs and manners of the Greeks. He therefore found opportunity to preach the
gospel in the synagogues of the Greek Jews. He was very active in the cause of Christ
and boldly proclaimed his faith. Learned rabbis and doctors of the law engaged in
public discussion with him, confidently expecting an easy victory. But they were not
able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. Not only did he speak in
the power of the Holy Spirit, but it was plain that he was a student of the prophecies
and learned in all matters of the law. He ably defended the truths that he advocated
and utterly defeated his opponents. -

10. What
gift
has Christ promised to
His
followers? Acts 2:38,

Why is it not
received today as fully
as
it should
be?
Christ declared that the divine influence of the Spirit was to be with His followers
unto the end. But the promise
is
not appreciated as it should be; and therefore its
ful-
fillment is not seen as it might be. The promise of the Spirit is a matter little thought
of;
and the result is only what might be
expected-spiritual
drought, spiritual
darkness, spiritual declension and death. Minor matters occupy the attention, and the
divine power which
is
necessary for the growth and prosperity
of
the church, and which
would bring all other blessings
in
its train,
is
lacking, though offered
in
its infinite
plenitude. -

What characteristic distinguished
the early

Acts
2:44
45;
4:34-37.
Many of these early believers were immediately cut off from family and friends
by the zealous bigotry of the Jews, and it was necessary to provide them with food
and shelter.
The
record declares, Neither was there any among them that lacked, and it
tells how the need was filled. Those among the believers who had money and posses
sions cheerfully sacrificed them to meet the emergency. Selling their houses or their
lands, they brought the money and laid it
at
the apostles feet, and distribution was
made unto every man according as he had need.
This
liberality on the part of the believers was the result of the outpouring of
the Spirit. The converts to the gospel were of one heart and of one soul. One com
mon interest controlled them-the success of the mission entrusted to them; and
covetousness had no place in their lives. Their love for their brethren and the cause
they had espoused, was greater than their love of money and possessions. Their
works testified that they accounted the souls
of
men of higher value than earthly
wealth. - The Acts 0 the Apostles pp 70 71

1.
What
did Saul
in
his rel igious zeal undertake to do to the Christians?
Acts 9 :1
2;
22:3-5.
[Saul s] activity in causing holy men and women to be dragged before tribunals,
where some were condemned to imprisonment and some even to death, solely be
cause
of
their faith
in
Jesus, brought sadness and gloom to the newly organized church,
and caused many to seek safety
in
flight. - The Acts of the Apostles p 113
2. What happened shortly
before
the
zealous
persecutor arrived
at
Damascus?
Acts
9:3
4.
Christ here identifies Himself with His people. In persecuting the followers
of
Jesus, Saul had struck directly against the Lord of heaven. In falsely accusing and
testifying against them, he had falsely accused and t ~ s t i f i against the Saviour of the
world. The

he react
to
the
voice?
What
answer
did
he receive?
Acts 9:5 6.
No doubt entered the mind of Saul that the One who spoke to him was Jesus of
Nazareth, the long-looked-for Messiah, the Consolation and Redeemer of Israe1.

4. What did Saul realize after
the
light
of heaven
had
disappeared? Acts
9:7,
8.
When the glory was withdrawn, and Saul arose from the ground, he found him
self totally deprived
of
sight. The brightness of Christ s glory had been too intense for
his mortal eyes; and when it was removed, the blackness of
night settled upon his vision.
He believed that this blindness was a punishment from God for his cruel persecution of
the followers of Jesus. In terrible darkness he groped about, and his companions, in
fear and amazement, led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

HUMAN DOUBTS
5. What experience did
the
persecutor undergo in
Damascus? Acts
9:9.
These
days of soul agony were to him as years. Again and again he recalled,
with anguish of spirit, the part he had taken in the martyrdom of Stephen. With hor
ror he thought of his guilt in allowing himself to be controlled by the malice and pre
judice of the priests and rulers, even when the face of Stephen had been lighted up
with the radiance of heaven. In sadness and brokenness oCspirit he recounted the
many times he had closed his eyes and ears against the most striking evidences and
had relentlessly urged on the persecution of the believers in Jesus of Nazareth. -
The
ctsof the postles
p.
118.
Thus
he seemed to be shut away from all human sympathy. His only hope of
help was
in
a merciful God, and to Him he appealed
in
brokenness of heart. . . .
As
Saul yielded himself fully to the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, he saw
the mistakes of his life and recognized the far-reaching claims of the law of God. He
who had been a proud Pharisee, confident that he was justified by his good works, now
bowed before God with the humility and simplicity of a little child, confessing his own
unworthiness and pleading the merits of a crucified and risen
Saviour. -Ibid. p
119
6.
How did
the
Lord
bring th is
humiliated
Pharisee
into contact with His
church? Acts 9:10-12.
The Lord then sent His angel to one of the very men whom Saul had hoped to
take captive and revealed to him
in
vision that he should
go
into the street called
Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold,
he prayeth, and hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his
hand on him, that he might receive his sight.

7. Why
was the disciple
Ananias surprised by
the
Lord s instruct ion? Acts
9:13, 14.
Ananias could scarcely credit the words of the angel; for the reports of Saul s
bitter persecution of the saints
at
Jerusalem had spread far and
wide. -The
cts
of
the
postles p.
121.
8. With what words did
the
Lord
order
him to act? Acts 9 :15, 16.
The command was imperative: Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto Me,
to bear My name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel.

9. How
did
Ananias obey
his
Lord,
and wha t
effect did
this have
on Saul? Acts
9:17-19.
In
this case Ananias represents Christ, and also represents Christ s ministers
upon the earth, who are appointed to act
in
His stead. In Christ s stead Ananias
touches the eyes of Saul, that they may receive sight. In Christ s stead he places his
hands upon him, and, as he prays
in
Christ s name, Saul receives the Holy Ghost. All
is
done
in
the name and by the authority of Christ. Christ is the fountain; the church

10. What was th e purpose of Paul s life from then on? 1 Corinthians 1:17,
18;

(Philippians 1:21). -

It
is the absence of the Spirit that makes the gospel ministry so powerless. Learn
ing, talent, eloquence, every natural or acquired endowment, may be possessed; but,
without the presence of the Spirit of God, no heart will be touched, no sinner won to
Christ. On the other hand, if they are connected with Christ, if the gifts of the Spirit

1. In what way was John th e Bap tis t to perform

Luke

17.
John the Baptist went forth
in
the spirit and power of Elijah to prepare the way

Elijah
demand of
the
apostate
people
of
Israel? 1 Kings 18:21.
What parallel
can
be seen between
the
days of
Elijah
and
our days?
The present age is one of idolatry, as verily as was that in which Elijah lived.
No
outward shrine may be visible; there may be no image for the eye to rest upon; yet
thousands are following after the gods of this world-after riches, fame, pleasure, and
the pleasing fables that permit man to follow the inclinations of the unregenerate
heart. Multitudes have a wrong conception of God and His attributes, and are as truly
serving a false god as were the worshipers of Baal. Many even of those who claim to
be Christians have allied themselves with influences that are unalterably opposed to
God and His truth. Thus they are led to turn away from the divine and to exalt the

people
in the
last

The
time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The obser
vance of the false sabbath will be urged upon us.
The
contest will be between the
commandments of God and the commandments
of
men. Those who have yielded step
by step to worldly demands and conformed to worldly customs will then yield to the
powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatened imprison
ment, and death. At
that time the gold will be separated from the dross. -Prophets and
