The Sea Fisheries Statistics for 1974 largely fo llow the layout of the 1973 publication. The tables refer, as far as possible, to the United Kingdom w ith separate figures for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Additional statistics relating to Scotland are published annually in the Scottish Sea Fisheries Statistical Tables.

In some cases figures for the various parts of the United Kingdom are not strictly comparable and differences are explained in the headings and footnotes of the tables. More general definitions are given in the Explanatory Notes on Page 1.

These tables are intended to provide a broad picture of the United Kingdom fishing industry and its operations. Requests for more detailed information should be addressed to :

The Secretary,Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, (Fishery Statistics Section),Great Westminster Flo use,Horseferry Road,London SW1 P 2AE.

E X P L A N A T O R Y N O T E S1. The various species of fish are divided into three main groups : demersal, pelagic and shellfish. The names of the kinds of fish included in each group, are show in table 2.2. The term "demersal" fish covers species living on or near the sea bed ; "pelagic" fish are species found mainly in coastal waters in shoals near the surface of the sea.3. Quantities of headless or filleted-at-sea fish landed by British and foreign fishing vessels are shown in terms of equivalent landed weight (i.e. head on, gutted) except in the trade tables (17 et seq) where actual product weights are shown.4. The figures of "fish livers" are expressed as the raw equivalent of any liver oils landed.5. The average values of fish quoted in table 11 are those realised at first-hand sales and apply to allfish sold regardless of whether it was sold for human consumption or for other uses (e.g. fish meal, animal feeding stuffs).6. The term "British landings" relates to the landings of British registered fishing vessels.7. The sign . . , indicates a quantity of less than 500 cwts or a value less than £500 according to thetable.
