Join friends and members of Second Church on July 8-13, led by Mission Committee chairperson, Ray Davis, as we embark upon our first-annual mission trip excursion to the

Buckhorn Children’s Center in Buckhorn, KY. Founded in 1902 with support of numerous Presbyterian congregations, Buckhorn Children’s Center currently provides residential treatment and special education programs for 28 youth from 12-17 years of age. As many of you are aware, Second church has been a long-time mission partner and financial supporter of the Buckhorn Children’s Center ministry, and in our continued efforts to engage in the “hands-on” work of the Church’s call for service and mission. This year’s Buckhorn Mission Trip experience will be open to any and all who wish to serve. Work projects will be varied and will require the gifts and skills of all ability levels. Should you be interested in learning more about this exciting and life-changing opportunity, please contact Ray Davis (272-1389 or [email protected]) or Barrett Milner (254-7768 or [email protected]) for more details and registration information.

BUILD UPDATE

103 members and guests represented Second Presbyterian Church at BUILD's Nehemiah Action Assembly last month. Approximately 1500 people from 16 other congregations were pleased to hear Mayor Gray commit to attending, along with members of his administration, and at least 25 major local employers the Ex-Offender Employment Workshop July 30th here at our church. For this workshop, BUILD will bring in national experts on successful city hiring policies that have been implemented to reduce employment barriers for people with criminal records. The purpose of this workshop is to dispel stigmas and fears in Lexington about ex-offenders and to encourage employers to rethink hiring practices. 20,000 people in our city have a criminal background. Upon their release, if ex-offenders are denied a job within 90 days of release they are 500 times more likely to re-offend. 40% will be incarcerated again within 3 years. We, the taxpayer, will continue paying over 27 million dollars a year for Fayette Co. residents who are back in jail. After all, Jesus would expect us to be fair and just to those citizens that have 'paid their dues to society'. Work continues on the Affordable Housing Trust Fund and the Payday Lending problem. Discover how you can work towards social justice for all in our city by contacting one of us....Bill and Fredda Moody, Bobbie Brown, Jim Drahovzal, Dick and Faith Shore and Judy Ellis.

JOIN THE SUMMER CHOIR!!

Here is a special opportunity for high school through later decade singers. The Summer Choir will provide anthems for many summ er Sundays and you are invited to join us as we begin on June 3 . We do not have evening rehearsals but we meet to rehearse an anthem each Sunday at 8:00 a.m., before 8:30 worship and at 10:30 prior to 11:00 worship. The anthems are easy to learn! And, we don’t wear robes in the summer. The Summer Choir includes our regular Covenant Choir members but also is created to include new members, and you are welcome to join us occasionally or often.

Please contact me (254-7768) if you have any questions. We would love to have you join us this singing summer.

The advantage of knowledge is this: that that wisdom preserves the life of its possessor. Ecc. 7:12

Here is helpful information from Karina Christopher, a registered dietitian at UK Markey Cancer Center . . . It's the perfect time of year for cookouts and picnics. However, research shows that the meat we grill and how we grill it might increase our risk of cancer. Diets high in red meat or processed meat

can greatly increase your risk of colorectal cancer. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, eating 3.5 ounces of processed meat every day increases colorectal cancer risk by 36%. Not only does your choice of meat matter, the chemicals on the outside of meat during grilling might also increase risk. When we cook meat, poultry, or fish at high temperatures carcinogenic compounds are formed. Also, the smoke that comes up after fat burns gets absorbed by the meat and forms another chemical that can change the cell's DNA and increase risk of cancer.

There are some ways to reduce risk while grilling:

• Add fruits and vegetables to each meal. Grilled veggies pose no threat.

• Cook low and slow. Lower temperatures for a longer time reduce harmful chemical formation.

• Marinate. Using a marinate can decrease the amount of harmful chemicals by 90%!

• Trim the fat. Buying leaner cuts of meat or trimming the fat before you cook the meat will reduce the likelihood of the chemicals developing. Cover your grill with foil and poke holes to keep the fat drippings from landing on burning coals.
