Every Christmas looks like the department stores moved their inventory into our living room! However, those who give and receive all the Christmas stuff are no closer to each other than they are without all the things of Christmas. In fact, the material part of Christmas, the gifts that exchange hands, often piles up higher barriers between people. The old saying still holds true - You can’t but love. So how can we reintroduce the spiritual into a season that has sold out to materialism? How can we bring community into a time of year that has become lost to commodity?

Before going any further, I offer this important disclaimer. My name is not Ebenezer Scrooge and I am not trying to kill the spirit of Christmas. That said, I add that what is good for the economy is not necessarily good for Christianity. Economic self-interest and the gospel of Jesus Christ often are in direct conflict; that is, when we are able to hear the gospel above the shopping mall music and credit card charge-ups. While Santa Claus may be the savior of the economy, Jesus Christ is the savior of the creation. What is good for the economy is not always good for the creation - especially when the economy calls for excessive consumption and the creation groans for conservative stewardship.

No, I’m not calling for a boycott of Christmas or suggesting we put up detour signs for Santa. However, what would Christmas look like if instead of concentrating on possessions we focused on people? Instead of giving things, we gave ourselves? Instead of greater consumption, we promoted greater community? Instead of following Santa, we dared to follow Jesus?

Let me offer a few glimpse at Christmases future if such a radical strategy were followed. Scene #1: A couple gives their elderly mother a gift certificate for a catered dinner for her and three bridge playing friends. The giving couple prepares and serves the meal themselves. While Santa does his thing solo, Jesus does his things with others, eating and celebrating with friends. People over possessions and giving ourselves over giving things define this gift. Scene #2: A grandfather, unable to be with his grandchildren over the holidays, records himself reading the story of Jesus’ birth in Luke’s Gospel and “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and sends the recording to his grandchildren. Although absent in body he is able to be present in spirit and voice. That grandpa’s voice will live on in his grandchildren’s Christmas Eve memoires. Jesus is not physically with us this Christmas but his voice still speaks Community over consumption defines this gift. Scene #3: Teenage brothers and sisters rack their brains over what to get their mom and dad who have just about everything. There are always the old standbys - perfume and a tie. But the fragrance does not last and the tie will eventually end up in a rummage sale somewhere. What about an alternative gift? A donation to a charity in their parents’ name! The fragrance of charity will long outlive the fragrance of Chanel. Scene #4: Grown siblings wonder what to get their eldest brother who is known as a practical joker. Through elaborate planning and frequent phone calls, the siblings devise the ultimate practical joke on this one who has a passion for humor. The memory of their gift brings laughter to his soul throughout the year.

What would Christmas look like if we truly believed that “the greatest of these is love” and instead of focusing on consumption we focused on community? It is easier to give things than to give ourselves. Giving ourselves requires work. But the personal gifts are the lasting ones. The first Christmas was all about God giving himself to us. In the Spirit of Christ should we not give ourselves to each other as we celebrate his birth? Think about it as we joyfully prepare for Christ’s birth. Blessings, Dan

HOPE CENTER 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS DINNER Second Church will once again participating in the 12 Days of Christmas celebration at the Hope Center by sponsoring a meal on Monday, December 30. If you would like to help prepare the meal for the evening, we will be having a prep crew at 2:30 who will work until 5:00 p.m. Dinner is served promptly at 5 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m.---this is a great activity for families with children! If you have questions, would like to help prepare the meal or serve, please contact Trey Kramer ([email protected]). Donations of two liter drinks are also needed for the meal; a table will be marked in the church dining room beginning 12/2, where you can leave the two liter bottles. (The men prefer caffeine drinks.) We interested in having music for the men during their dinner that evening; if you are a part of a small instrumental group and may be interested in volunteering your services for this time, please contact Trey! Thank you for your assistance.

BLANKETS OF HOPE As the temperatures turn colder, many of us will take the warmth of our homes for granted. The streets of Lexington are filled with those who don’t have that luxury…those who can’t get to a shelter or who won’t go to a shelter for one reason or another. With your assistance,

Blankets of Hope can give hope and warmth to those who need it. Blankets, new and old, (but clean) are desperately needed! If you have extra blankets, coats, gloves or hats, please consider donating them to Blankets of Hope. If you would like to donate money in honor/memory of a loved one or friend for Christmas, small blankets are $6 and large are $10 (we can supply you with Hope Center cards to send to those that you are honoring). If you’d like to help, please email Kirsten Kramer Carey ([email protected]) for information regarding donations . . . any help is greatly appreciated!

THE GIVING TREE

The Giving Tree is located in the Gathering Place and you’re invited to decorate the tree for the residents of Canaan House, the Women's Recovery Center and the Men's Hope Center. ADOPT-A-FAMILY THIS CHRISTMAS The holidays can be a very difficult time for single parents trying to stretch a dollar further than it can possible go or for an individual with no family members. If you are looking for a way to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, participating in the Adopt-A-Family program at Westminster Village might be just what you’re looking for! You are paired with an individual or family, (your choice), that will not be receiving gifts through any other agency and have been screened. You will be given a “wish list” which will include names, ages, sizes, etc., to help you in your shopping. Contact Evelyn Kramer (873-4700 or [email protected]) with questions. To request an adoption, contact Edith Riggs, Community Resource Team (231-0871).

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts

Colossians 3:15 The holidays are often filled with temptations to let healthy habits go. Keeping expectations realistic and following most of your healthy habits will make getting back on track in January easier. Give yourself freedom to enjoy without losing control. The best gift you can give yourself--peace and permission to say No! As obligations and invitations pile up it is OK to turn some down in favor of some quiet time and renewal. Save the Dates

• Wednesday, December 4 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Best Friends Adult Day Center is holding a special Open House for Second Presbyterian Church! Come have a sneak peak at their new facility 5220 Grey Oak Lane (located in Brannon Crossing). • Wednesday, December 11 at 12:00 noon Second Halfers Christmas Lunch. Looking for an interesting and challenging way to provide additional “Second Mile” service to our church family? If so, you may be interested in joining the Sanctuary Audio/Video Team in enhancing our worship service through excellent sound quality and in producing high quality video recordings for home and internet use. Visit us in the back row of the balcony on Sunday morning for a tour and/or contact Ron Brown (859-272-1985) if interested.

ANOTHER “SECOND MILE” OPPORTUNITY

MILITARY CARE PACKAGES Military Missions sends care packages to all of our deployed military all year long. A list of items can be found at www.militarymissions.org. It’s sad to think some of our men and women never receive a care package, until one arrives from Military Missions. A thank you note I received brought tears to my eyes.

Please show your appreciation and thank our men and women for their service. They are in harms way as they defend our freedom. Thank you, Jeanie Lee

SECOND SHARING . . . Small Group, Justice Ministry, Second Movies, Second Halfers Lunch PAGE 5

SECOND MOVIES All are invited to join us the first week of every month for “Second Movies!” Join us Friday, December 6 at 1:00 p.m. in the Youth Room as we plan to watch Lincoln (new one). Popcorn will be provided (or bring your own snacks).

Do you want to explore the idea of “Call”, but don’t have time for one more meeting? Would you like to be part of a multi-generational group discussing “Call” in our lives? As a follow-up to the September Pace-Warren Speaker, Doug Wysockey-Johnson, Colette Crown is starting a new Small Group named “Second Call.” Other than an initial face-to-face meeting, the group will meet via a closed FaceBook group. You will be able to participate at any time that is convenient for you, whether that be 8 AM, 7 PM or 2 AM! We really hope that this will bring together a diverse group of people at different stages of life. Our first meeting will be Sunday, January 12th, 12:15 at The Village Host. It is very important that you be present at the first meeting. Regretfully, you will not be able to participate otherwise. At this meeting we will outline and agree on ground rules for the group interaction and lay the foundation of trust and respect that is vital to a small group. We may possibly reopen the group at a later date.

We will use Doug’s book, Called Together as the starting point for our discussion (cost - $11.00). The book will be ordered after our first meeting. Colette Crown will serve as moderator and will supplement the discussion with materials from other sources. Lakshman has agreed to serve as the administrator of the FaceBook page.

If this intrigues you, we hope to see you on January 12th. If you have any questions before then, call Colette (859-361-1315).

The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. Psalm 33:5

....Now the research process (described in last month's Second Sharing) begins with Second Church hosting BUILD's Research to Action Kickoff December 9. Interested Justice Ministry members from BUILD's 24 interfaith congregations will gather to organize research teams. Thanks again to Linda Alexander for already committing to serving on this year's "new" justice issue, Crime and Drugs, committee. Attendees will also have an opportunity to join the existing Payday Lending committee to work with 60+ diverse KY organizations in developing a strategy for the 2014 legislative session to end this usury. In 2012, more than 5,000 Kentuckians were trapped in 30 or more payday loans. One may also join the untiring Affordable Housing Trust Fund team as they enter the 6th year of advocating for the nearly 28,000 working poor families in Fayette CO waiting for our city council to support an imperative AHTF. Currently, a minimum wage employee needs to work 74 hrs. weekly to afford the average $700 rent for a 2 bedroom apt. ‘Go the Second Mile' in active service with Second’s Justice Ministry Team to DO JUSTICE as we work toward the vision of what God intends our city to be for all His children. Contact Fredda or Bill Moody, Bobbie Brown, Carroll Tarvin, Faith Shore, Jim Drahovzal or Judy Maxson to learn more.
