Second Sunday of Advent ~ December 10, 2017
Help religious communities. Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests need your help. Through prayer, love, and sacrifice, they established Catholic schools, hospitals, and more. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left a shortage in retirement funding. “Your generous contribution helps us to care for our retired sisters and enables our younger sisters to continue in active ministry,” writes a religious sister. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and more for thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. It also helps ensure younger members can continue the good works of their elders! Please give to the Retirement Fund for Religious collection at Mass this weekend. Envelopes are available in the pews.

Fr. Gerard’s Corner It may be difficult to fully appreciate the extent of the suffering that the Jewish people underwent during the years of their exile in Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar’s army had defeated Judah, the temple was destroyed, and the people were deported from the Promised Land. It would have been easy to lose hope, not knowing how long they would be without a home. The author of this section of Isaiah wrote during this bleak time. It would have been natural to write a diatribe or a lament. But he wrote a message of hope, a book of consolation as it is often called. One can hope that it consoled the faithful, giving them a vision of redemption. Such a vision can sustain us as we suffer trials in our own time.
The author of Second Peter wrote during an interesting era. A hundred years or so after the Resurrection, Christians still anticipated that Jesus would return in glory any day. We still believe this, but we are not surprised when another year, or indeed our entire lifetime goes by without it happening. But at this time, in the second century, Christians were just gradually coming to accept the reality that the parousia, the Second Coming, was not right around the corner. This may have led to consternation among the faithful and derision from nonbelievers. Second Peter makes the observation that God’s perspective of time is nothing like ours, so “one day” could be “a thousand years” (2
Peter 3:8). He then attributes this delay as a sign of God’s patience, giving time for all to repent and become holy.
In order to prepare people for the coming of Jesus, John the Baptist invited them to repent and be forgiven. The water of the Jordan River symbolized the cleansing of sin that baptism brought to the believer. It also symbolized the renewal of life after being parched in the desert, as John was, as Isaiah was, as the people in exile were, as we still can be today. Fr. Gerard

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Our readings from Holy Scripture on this Second Sunday of Advent remind us of what we are supposed to be doing during Advent, in fact throughout our lives. The reading from Isaiah anticipates the coming of Christ and John the Baptist as it proclaims “… prepare the way of the Lord.” This is a time of preparation for us.
That message is repeated in our Gospel from St. Mark. Today’s Gospel is the absolute beginning of Mark’s Gospel and it immediately gives us that same signal by declaring, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” Of course, we all realize that the path to the Lord may not always be straight for us, but now is a time to correct that.
God is waiting for us. St. Peter in his Second Letter, from which our Second Reading is drawn, indicates that God, however, “is patient with you.” You might say on this Second Sunday of Advent that the Lord is giving us a second chance to respond to His call. One of the basics of St. John the Baptist’s messages was that we need to get ourselves right with the Lord, perhaps turn our lives in a different direction. We can change; now is the time to do that.
Pope St. John XXIII once stated during a homily in Ad-vent, “We are all part of an immense family. This is proven by what is in our hearts during Advent and Christmas.” Now is the time to put love in our hearts and to truly prepare the way of the Lord.

RCIA Sponsors Needed! We have several men and women seeking baptism in our RCIA program in need of someone to walk beside them in their journey to the sacraments at Easter Vigil. No special knowledge or expertise is needed; we provide all catechesis. You would be their friend on the journey, and stand up with them at several rites prior to Easter (usually at 9am Mass--the first one is December 10th). Easter Vigil is March 31st. Please consider becoming a sponsor; we are missionary disciples when we help others know Christ. Contact Pamela Smith at [email protected].

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the
training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
