way powerhouse Stomp, Keith Middleton has

been pounding the stage in the show where

performers turn everyday objects such as

matchboxes, brooms, and garbage cans into

the fundamental building blocks of a dance,

music and theatrical performance. Joining him

MEHREEN MURTAZA メヘリーン・ムルターザ (SAUDI ARABIA)Mehreen Murtaza is a

Pakistani female artist from Saudi Arabia who

is new-generation Sci-fi enthusiast. Mehreen

finally unveils her large art project, which she

has been working on, in collaboration with the

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum at FT5, as well as

a performance piece and a selection of digital

prints that relate to futurism. She describes

these as portrait photos about the future of

AGI CHEN チェン・イージエ (TAIWAN)Agi Chen lives and works

in Taipei, Taiwan where she

works in digital graphics,

paintings and animation. In the mixed-media

project “United Islands” Agi transforms famous

cartoon characters into concentric circles or

“color wheels”, based on participant request.

She describes this as creating “a database of

collective memory by color”. Throughout the

course of FT5 she hopes to encourage view-

ers to participate in her art, and relate to each

other through colors.

PRILLA TANIA プリラ・タニア (INDONESIA)Prilla Tania lives and

works in her hometown

of Bandung, Indonesia.

She works across a range of mediums, of-

ten utilising everyday objects to make a

statement about global environmental is-

sues. For FT5, Prilla is working with recy-

cled Duplex - a packaging box from which

she maps the cycle of energy production,

consumption and disposal.

First held in 1999, this year marks the

fifth iteration of the Fukuoka Asian

Art Triennale (FT5 for short). The

international exhibition is held un-

der a different theme every three years to

showcase the most promising artists from

across Asia. Highly acclaimed both in Japan

and around the world for its focus on con-

temporary Asian art, the Fukuoka Asian Art

Museum aims to create a space of art ex-

change between Fukuoka and Asia through

the event. This year’s Fukuoka Triennale also

commemorates the 15th anniversary of the

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. The exhibitions

feature paintings, sculptures, installations,

films and other artworks from around Asia,

and some artists visit Fukuoka to create joint

works, hold workshops, and give lectures. This

year, over 40 artists from 21 countries and re-

gions are scheduled to participate in the tri-

ennale, including several first-time Japanese

artists; the exhibition will feature many new

works in the fields of video, photography, de-

sign, and media art.

Along with the exhibition, the Fukuoka Triennale also runs a special “Artist in Residence” program and various

art exchange events with the local people. This year, around 20 FT5 artists and groups from Asia are invited to

participate in the program.

We sat down with three of the artists (and also this month’s cover models!) currently in Fukuoka on the FT5

Artist-in-Residence program. All three artists are participating in the 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale from 9/6

Darrell Smith is Fukuoka’s Piano Man, regularly finding

his audience “in the mood for a melody”. Born in Japan

to American missionary parents, he spent one year in

California for every four years in Fukuoka and Japan. Music

was always a huge part of life - first being exposed to gospel music in

church, his interest expanded through childhood (when he spent his

monthly allowance on records by UK artists such as U2 and The Cure).

Playing saxophone and piano in school, Darrell was 20 when landed

his first professional gig in Fukuoka. But it was an eleven-year stint at

the Fukuoka Grand Hyatt that’s to thank for his nickname “Pianoman”

- a nod to Billy Joel, whose hit song was requested perhaps a few too

many times. Nowadays Darrell’s busy schedule includes playing at

weddings, voice-over and narration jobs, songwriting for commercials,

radio presenting, and preparing for the release of his third solo album

“Oceanside”. Being Darrell’s first time to release a full-length collection

of all-original material, the album has been a personal journey six

years in the making. Each Monday, Darrell hosts TENJIN UNITED on

LOVE FM 76.1 - a show for which he personally selects all the music.

Besides performing on stage, it’s his next favorite thing. His new CD

“Oceanside” will be launched with a live show on Sep. 13 (Sat.) 18:30~

at Resola NTT Yume-Tenjin Hall.

발병하는 등 결핵은 현대인의 병이라고 해도 이상할 것이 없습니다. 조기에 발견했을

경우에는 평소와 같이 생활하면서 통원 치료만 해도 괜찮지만 조치를 취하지 않았을

때에는 주위 사람들에게 병을 옮길 수도 있고 심할 경우 사망에 이르기도 합니다.

결핵의 주된 증상은, 기침, 가래, 발열, 권태감 등으로 일반적인 감기 증상과

비슷합니다. 기침 등이 오래가거나 할 경우(2주 이상)에는 병원을 찾아 진찰을 받는

것이 좋습니다.

Focus on Asia International Film Festival Fukuoka 2014A flashy red-carpet opening

ceremony kicks off the 24th

edition of this yearly film

festival in which 39 films from

18 Asian countries and regions

are screened over ten days. This

year’s festival shines a spotlight

on Taiwanese films, and includes

7 films about ukiyoe artists.

HojoyaThis 1,000 year-old festival is one

of the “big three” in Hakata and

a great way to welcome Autumn.

The 1km approach to Hakozaki

Shrine is lined with around 500

busy stalls. Locals purchase

fresh ginger and Hojoya hajiki

a ceramic made by Hakata Doll

artisans.

九州最大の秋祭りにして博多の三大祭りの一つでもあるその歴史は古く、万物の生命を慈しみ、殺生を戒めると同時に実りの秋を迎え海の幸、山の幸に感謝する神事だ。全国でも筥崎宮の放生会の規模は群を抜いており、参道には約500軒の露店や見世物小屋が立ち並び、連日夜遅くまで賑わう。名物の葉付き新生姜や博多人形と同じ工程で作られる放生会おはじき目当ての常連客も多い。

第12回久留米焼きとり日本一フェスタ

◊ Central Park and Fukuoka Castle Ruins Master PlansFukuoka City is deliberating a Central

Park Plan that would connect Ohori and

Maizuru parks and provide citizens with

recreational areas as well as spaces to

experience the city's history and culture.

The plan calls for the installation of paths

that would enable better access between

the parks, the establishment of various

walking courses and a new event space

with castle vistas. Meanwhile, the Fukuo-

ka Castle Ruins Master Plan aims to make

Maizuru Park a centerpiece of the city by

restoring the stone walls and buildings of

the Fukuoka Castle complex.
