Notes from the National Office -2013 Annual Membership Meeting will be held in Shelbyville, KY on October 5, 2013. Please let us know if you will be attending so that we can make correct meal and tour arrangements.DNA Testing with Early Pedigree Registration went into effect on July 1 for a one year trial. Several members have already registered calves younger than 5 months of age and have submitted hair samples for DNA testing. DNA results will be printed on registration certificates once the program is fully implemented. This could be an industry leader in the making.2013 – 2014 Herdbook will not be published this year due to a complete lack of membership interest in advertising. AMGA will be publishing a Membership Directory instead at no cost to members. We hope to have it ready in time for the Annual Membership Meeting.2015 Calendar is being planned. Details will be announced soon. 2013 Calendar was a great success for the Association and there were some incredibly beautiful pictures in the calendar. Make you plans to get a month of 2015 for YOUR herd.Igenity is offering a $5 discount on all DNA testing submitted through AMGA. Watch for details!

For the first time in many years, the Annual Membership Meeting of the American Murray Grey Association will not be held at the same time as the National Show. In an effort to save travel expenses, the Directors decided to hold the meeting in Shelbyville, KY, near the Association’s office. Office Manager Gennie Gerow has put together some pre-meeting activities for AMGA members attending the meeting. Friday morning, October 4, Gennie has arranged for a tour of one of Kentucky’s premier Saddlebred horse farms, Undulata Farms. Hobby Bennett, owner of Undulata is a world renowned breeder and promoter of Saddlebred horses. Following the tour of Undulata, Gennie is planning a picnic lunch and a tour of Mulberry Orchards. Mulberry Orchard is a multiple enterprise farming operation producing fruit, field crops and tobacco. This will be a great opportunity to get a feel for the breadth of Kentucky agriculture. For members not attending the Board of Directors meeting Friday afternoon, there are several neat things to do and see in Shelbyville. Talon Winery has wine tastings in the evenings. Main Street Shelbyville has a multitude of quaint shops; not to mention dozens of architectural styles in the houses along Main Street and the Historic District. Louisville is not far from Shelbyville and offers many unique attractions for Murray Grey folks Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. The Louisville Slugger factory tours are a lot of fun. A tour of Churchill Downs is almost a must, and a cruise on the Belle of Louisville is a great way to spend a morning or an afternoon. We are still planning events for Saturday morning before the Annual Membership Meeting.

AMGA Annual Meeting Plans

In a quiet corner of the Northeast is little bit of land that it almost seems that Time has overlooked. East of the Hudson River, about equidistant from both Boston and New York City, about an hour out of Albany, the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains retain much of the rural charm and beauty of a bygone era. Gently rolling hills support strong stands of mixed hardwoods, corn, soybeans, alfalfa and native grasses. Tucked away in this quiet hill country, Fox Hill Farm is home to some good Murray Grey cattle that are making a name for themselves on the dinner tables in that country. After a varied work and educational career, Larry Lampman returned to the farm that his family has lived on since 1882. Following the sale of the traditional dairy herd, Larry began raising beef cattle in the mid 1990s. He started with a group of cross bred cattle, developed a herd of good British White cows and discovered Murray Greys about the turn of the century. The Fox Hill Farm Murray Grey herd is built on two cow families; the Francenes and the Cocoas. Francene is still active in the herd at 14 years of age. She has a daughter and granddaughter working in the herd. Both progeny have the same muscling, correctness and apparent feed efficiency as Francene. There are 5 Cocoa’s in the herd

as well. Both Cocoa and Francene are granddaughters of the Spectrum Kenton bull. Larry has done some line breeding to Kenton and the results are impressive. Over the years, Larry has kept a close eye on structural correctness, extremely good feet and legs, feed efficiency and, most importantly, carcass

quality. The resulting cattle, regardless of the breed, are sound, heavily muscled cattle that grow well and carry a lot of condition on Lampman’s all grass program. It was already over 90 degrees when I arrived at Fox Hill Farm in July. The cows were in the barnyard, waiting on the AI technician. I stood in the pasture and watched the herd, as Larry turned them out after the AI tech left. Although it was mid-day and a whole lot hotter than it needed to be, the cows walked into the grass, dropped their muzzles and began grazing. After 2 weeks of uncommonly hot weather, the cows were all in good condition, calves growing well and ready to harvest 2 year old’s carrying an incredible amount of finish. Larry generally breeds the British Parks and Murray Greys AI to purebred bulls. He has used some of his Murray Grey bulls as clean up and there were several excellent yearling and 2 year old cross breds ready to harvest. The cross breds are colorful cattle, being white with dark red or black splotches covering most of their hides. Even though Fox Hill Farm is in a very rural area, the location allows Larry to access a very upscale market for his grass finished beef. The Lampman’s

market at several local Farmer’s Markets, cultural venues in the area and on the Internet. All of Larry’s calves are finished on the farm and marketed from the farm at exceptional premiums. Larry is expanding his Murray Grey horizons by offering semen and embryos for sale. Genex Semen has semen from Fox Hill Francois, a Thumb’s Up son out of Francene, and Larry has flushed his great Francene cow to Mairie

Gambler and is offering the embryos for sale. This is an exciting small herd that has been developed to meet a commercial market need with good structural soundness in the cattle. We look for more good things from Larry Lampman and Fox Hill Farm.

In the last edition of the MURRAY GREY NEWS a new program for early registrations and DNA testing was announced. As an incentive to increase early registration and recording of valuable breeding information a trial program beginning 7-1-2013 and running through 6-31-2014 gives breeders the opportunity to register animals under 150 days of age for $18 for pedigree only information. Under a special program, negotiated with the Igenity division of Neogen, members can submit genetic material and get the DNA profile information report for each animal and the pedigree only registration for a total charge of $30. This compares with the current $30 charge for pedigree registration by itself. Igenity has also offered $5 discount for all their tests submitted through the AMGA office. We have the tail hair collection kits here for your use. The tissue collectors are available directly from Igenity and have a dual function as an ID tag. RFID tags are slightly higher cost.

DNA Testing with Early Pedigree RegistrationThe AMGA profile is a bit abbreviated from the normal complete profile that costs $38 for each animal, but includes information on many of the most valuable traits available. Tenderness, Maternal Calving Ease, % Choice/Marbling, Average Daily Gain, and Stayabilty are all important indicators of profitability for beef producers and this tool will help breeders in selecting animals for their herds and can be a valuable marketing tool for selling breeding stock. The results of the gene information will be added to the registration certificates of participating animals to help in that marketing effort.

So now breeders have several options for pedigree registrations. They can submit them within 150 days for $18, submit them and DNA samples within 150 days for $30, or wait beyond the 150 days up to 400 days for the normal $30, or after that time for $40.

Call or write for your collection kits and get started! It’s easy. Just pull 30 - 40

hairs from a clean tail switch, record the animal on the sheet, attach it to the regular registration application and you will be sent the detailed DNA data for each of your calves as well as your regular registration papers. Members on Breedplan or members wanting the complete profile, aManno tests, parentage or any of the many other tests offered by Igenity can also receive their $5 discount by submitting them to our office.

If you are not familiar with the Igenity profile and the tests available go to www.igenity.com

We already knew that the Murray Grey has fantastic carcass traits. Only about 1 1/2 % of all animals tested score a “10” for tenderness on the various genetic tests with most being Angus or Murray Greys. Now we have another tool that we can use to improve our breed and demonstrate to the rest of the industry that Murray Greys …lead the way!

Cost-EffECtivE DNA-bAsED hEifEr sElECtioN—Now AvAilAblE from igENityselecting the best replacement heifers is critical to profitability and improving your herd’s genetics. breed associations and seedstock producers have long relied on igenity DNA technology to build the best genetics. Commercial cattle producers can now capture that power, prediction, and confidence in cost-effective DNA-based selection tools.

the igenity Profile for replacement heifers is:• Powerful: Insight into genetic potential early in life saves time and money.

• Practical: Information on economically relevant traits, plus the ability to add parentage for enhanced herd management.

• Easy: Important selection and management tools from a single easy-to-collect sample.

• Convenient: Rapid turnaround of results in less than three weeks, with decision-support tools available online and in person.

The 1960’s and 70’s were years of tremendous growth for Murray Greys around the world. As Australia’s premier domestic market carcass breed (grass based or short fed) the breed spread to New Zealand, the US, Canada and the UK. But then…..the “bigger is better” mentality infected the beef industry and we were swept up with the herd!If you’re tired of feeding 1400 lb. + cows, frame score 8 bulls, 100 lb. calves and steers that take forever to finish…. we have what you are looking for!

Using a bank of semen from the great old bulls of that time, we have blended the great MG genetics of the 1970’s with recent Square Meater imports and selected breeding stock using the DNA trait analysis from Igen-ity to develop a New, Old style MG herd!
