School has started so that means Fall is just around the bend. Not that Fall means a lot in south Florida - it's still hot and the leaves stay on the trees! So school starting is the only way we know that Fall has arrived! But at least know that cooler weather is on the way and we are now halfway through the heat.

So that means we need to start thinking about those auction quilts. I haven't figured out what I'm going to do just yet, but I know I better at least start thinking about it! We don't want to disappoint Alice now, do we?? You know she will get on your case so better get busy!! And of course, we need more comfy quilts. I know, I sound like a broken record but we are a nonprofit organization and we need to support our chosen charitable organizations - The Children's Advocacy Center and Bosom Buddies. The 2016 Raffle Quilt is coming along and will be a stunner!! Kudos to Susan Phillips for her hard work. And Hilary Bobker is planning the 2017 quilt.

This month I hope we will be able to give out at least 3 of the Quilts of Valor that were made. I have the names of the recipients and will contact them. The quilts are beautiful and I'm sure will be very much appreciated.

Also this month we have our very own Beverly Young who will present a talk on miniature quilts and then give a class on Saturday. Perfect for those auction quilts we need to make!

We have two national teachers for October and November and then it will be time for the Holiday Party - is it just me or did this year go by way too fast? I guess it's true that the older you get, the faster time seems to go. Maybe that's why I can't seem to get done all that I want to do!

I'm hoping that someone out there has decided to step up and take over the planning for National Quilt Day for 2016. If you're stuck for ideas, just ask around or better yet, ask Judy - she's always got something up her sleeve!! But she's done more than her share of those events. August 20, 2015

The meeting was called to order by President Marlene Meloney at 7:00 p.m. There were 61 members and 1 guest for a total of 62 present.

Marlene invited the members with birthdays in the month of August to come up and pick a Fat Quarter to celebrate.

Marlene asked for the approval of the July Minutes that were printed in the last newsletter. Georgi Sears made a motion to approve the minutes and Pat Walrath seconded the motion and all were in favor.

Marlene asked if anyone with an embroidery machine could make the labels for the Quilts of Valor. Davie Harrington volunteered to do the labels.

Alice Gaertner reminded everyone of the need for comfy quilts and small quilts for the auction.

Karen Harris let us know that ConnKerr Cancer has a new name: Ryan’s Case for Smiles. September 17th has been designated as the 1 Millionth Pillowcase Celebration. There is more information on their website (http://caseforsmiles.org/) There will be two local pillowcase-making days: September 19th at Viking located in JoAnn’s (JoAnn’s is not involved) from 11 am to 2 pm and October 3rd at Flash Sew & Quilt.

Judy Bauckham announced that the upcoming programs will be posted in the newsletter to give our snowbird members an equal opportunity to sign up for classes. Gathering Stitches will be on August 29th at Flash Sew & Quilt.

Lynn Eccleston showed us the block of the month for September - a variation on the Split 9-Patch with a solid bright center. Directions will be in the newsletter.

Next was Show & Tell with Comfy Quilts (7 total) and personal quilts, followed by “Flaunting Your Bias,” a program by Judy Bauckham and Linda Biondino about working with bias cut fabric.

PROGRAM NEWS

DearMembers of the Guild,Our September program will be presented by our own Bev Young.  She will give a lecture and wonderful trunk show on Small Quilts.  She knows that you are planning your small quilt for the quilt show auction and she hopes that she will provide you with inspiration to make some exquisite creations.  She will continue the fun with a Small Quilt Workshop on Saturday, September 19 at Flash Sew and Quilt.  There are just a few slots left in this workshop.  If you want to take part, reserve your spot by sending a check payable to NQG for $25 to Judy Bauckham; 7668 Sussex Ct.; Naples, FL 34113.  You can email me for a supply list. I hope that you have been daring when out there flaunting your bias.  I learned a lot and remembered a lot while preparing for this lecture.  I thought that I would share some of my notes and some of the links to help you remember all of the information. Straight Grain (Warp) is parallel with the selvedge of the fabric.  Threads on the SG are woven the tightest and so this grain has the least stretch.  Border strips should always be cut on the SG to help avoid wavy quilt edges. Cross Grain (Weft) is perpendicular to the SG.  It generally has some stretch since the threads are woven a bit looser than those on the SG.  Most garments are cut on the SG with the CG parallel with the floor when the wearer is standing.  This allows more stretch through the width of the garment, such as in a pant leg, which needs more circumferential than vertical stretch. Bias – The true bias grain is at a 45 degree angle to the warp and weft threads.  Every piece of woven fabric has two true biases, perpendicular to each other.  All other angled cuts are also on a bias, just not a true bias.

Tips for Sewing Bias Seams·         Pin!  Use good, fine, new pins, and pin each seam carefully, with pins at frequent intervals.

Make sure you don’t stretch the fabric as you pin·         Basting first is a time consuming, but really good way to keep the fabric from stretching.·         Use a brand new, very fine, ‘sharp’ needle.  Use a single hole machine plate to keep the

fabric from being sucked down into the slotted plate used for zig zag sewing.·         If sewing a straight grain piece to a bias piece, put the straight grain piece on top.

This may not be possible if your bias edged piece has points that you must aim for.·         Use spray starch to stabilize the pieces before sewing them together.·         Cut a freezer paper template the finished size of the patch and iron it on.  Sew the

seam just outside of the freezer paper.  The freezer paper will hold the edge nicely while you sew.

·         When making half square triangles, stitch the seam before cutting the triangle rather than after.

·         Use a tear away stabilizer.·         If a piece has already stretched, put a hand orS machine basting stitch in the seam allowance

and draw the piece up to match the required measurement.·         When ironing, never slide the iron around on the fabric.  Never iron in a circular

motion·         Hilary Bobker gave us a great tip from her garment making days.  See this tip below.

SPLIT NINE PATCH BLOCK OF THE MONTH

JUNE AND JULY 2015

This is a fast and simple nine patch block.

Make 3 dark blocks measuring 3 ½ inches and 3 light blocks measuring 3 ½ inches..

Make 3 half square triangles that are light on one side and dark on the other, each measuring 3 ½ inches. There are many ways to make these. My personal favorite method is to make two at a time by cutting two four inch blocks, placing them right sides together, drawing a line through the opposite corners and then sewing ¼ inch from the line. You’ll get two half square triangle which are slightly oversized. Cut them down to 3 ½ inch by using a small acrylic square that has a 45 degree angle through it or with the Tucker Trimmer. A tutorial on making half square triangles can be found at www.connectingthreads.com under the tutorial section.

Not very many of these were received. We don’t know why - it is a fast & simple block to make. This month (September) we are asking for a the same block but with a bright fabric as the center square (see below photo). You can use the same directions as given above.

Gathering Stitches (GS) was held on Saturday, August, 2015 with 16 members in attendance throughout the day, stopping by to work on their projects or to drop things off for others. The rain held off until 330pm just in time before we left.

Projects in various stages were being worked on and quilters helping other quilters. Quilt tops from the “Day Break” session were being worked on, collage, applique, blocks, cutting and cutting and more cutting.

Some highlights of the day: Donna showed her finished quilt top from the Day Break session and also her adorable quilt with appliqued animals. Linda B was putting some finishing touches on her niece’s wall hanging and Baby Bruce was in awe of the colors his grandma (Susan P)was using on her Laura Heine horse collage. Grace was cutting away and Marlene was busy as ever. Georgi made good use of the design board. And Fran, Ferne and Aloyse and Annette were deeply involved in their projects. Gathering Stitches will meet next on Saturday, September 26 , 2015, from 9:30 am to 3:30pm at Flash Sew and Quilt.

As an overall reminder, GS is scheduled for the last Saturday of the month EXCEPT February, March and December.

PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING CALENDAR CHANGE FOR GATHERING STITCHES FOR OCTOBER 2015: WE WILL MEET ON SATURDAY OCTOBER 24TH INSTEAD OF OCTOBER 31

See you next time, [email protected]

ConKerr Cancer is now called Ryan’s Case for Smiles - or Case for Smiles in short. We have the same mission to brighten hospital stays for kids - but have expanded to include kids hospitalized for reasons other than cancer. Our new motto: Helping Kids Feel Better to Heal better. We will further be expanding our efforts to help kids and families who are experiencing PTSD from serious illnesses and prolonged treatment.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and we are continuing our annual Miles of Pillowcase Smiles campaign. 2,112 pillowcases = one mile. Please help by making a pillowcase in September (or early October) to help our campaign. There will be an event at Viking in JoAnn’s September 19th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm where you can come and sew. Flash Sew & Quilt will have an event October 3rd to sew pillowcases at both locations; Naples and their new Ft. Myers store.

Minion Mania! The kids are loving fabric with Minions right now. Keep your eyes peeled for Minion fabric (it may have to be ordered…I know fabric.com has it) and make a cute pillowcase to make a sick child’s day.

Thank you for all you do for the kids!!! Karen Harris 239-249-1561 [email protected]
