RABBI’S NOTESby Rabbi Michael Mishkin

The Secret to a Meaningful and Transformative High Holidays

Shalom Friends,I hope everyone had a good and relaxing summer. One

of my favorite movies is City Slickers. The movie, which was released in 1991, is about three friends who take an annual vacation away from their wives. The friends, one of whom is played by Billy Crystal, decide to take an out of the box trip, in order to rediscover themselves. That trip is a supervised cattle drive across the Southwest. Under the supervision of a gruff cowboy named Curly,

the men set out on a journey that turns unexpectedly dangerous. The three men bond along the way, and in the end, conquer their fear of aging.

There is a scene in the movie, in which Billy Crystal is having a serious conversation with Curly. Over the course of his time on the cattle drive, Billy Crystal has come to see Curly as a guru, filled with great wisdom. At one point in the conversation, Curly asks Billy Crystal, “Do you know what the secret to life is? It’s just one thing.” Billy Crystal then asks, “What is it – what is the one thing?” And

Curly answers, “That’s what you’ve got to figure out.”Well, I have good news for you. (I’m not going to tell you the one thing that

explains all of life. I’ll save that for one of my High Holidays sermons.) But I will tell you that there are three things we need to do, and three things we need to think about, in order to make our High Holiday experiences meaningful and transforma-tive. And you don’t need me to tell you what these three actions and three themes are—because they are inscribed in the Mahzor (the High Holiday Prayer Book).

In the crescendo of the prayer—The Unetaneh Tokef—is says: “U-t’shuvah u-t’fillah u-tzedakah ma’avirin et ro-a ha-g’zerah,” which means, “But repentance, prayer, and tze-dakah have the power to transform the harshness of our destiny.” So those are the three actions, which we should be engaging in: repentance, deep introspection, acknowledg-ing what we’ve done wrong and why, and working to overcome our shortcomings; prayer—being honest with ourselves about who we are and trying to articulate the deepest feelings of our souls to ourselves and to God; and tzedakah—financially assist-ing people in need, and donating to worthwhile institutions that enrich the world.

And what about the three themes? Those can be found in the Rosh Hashanah Musaf Amidah. Each of these three themes has its own section in the Rosh Hashanah Amidah, and the two days of Rosh Hashanah are the only times they are recited during the year. The themes are: Malchuyot (God’s Kingship), Zichronot (Remembrances), and Shofarot (The Shofar). What do these three themes mean and why are they so important?

Malchuyot (God’s Sovereignty) reminds us that God created the world. Even if you don’t believe that, or are unsure about it, this concept challenges us to think about what it would mean for us—in each of our lives—if we believed that a loving and moral God created the world. First, we should feel an enormous sense of gratitude for all that is good, beautiful, and uplifting in the world. Second, we should recognize that a world created by God with intention, means that all of creation and every individual was cre-ated with intention. Thus, there is a deep meaning and purpose to our lives.

Zichronot (Remembrances) can be understood on two levels. The traditional un-derstanding is that the remembrances are God’s, and God remembers everything that we did in the past year. God also remembers all of the good that our ancestors have done, and the merit of those actions serve as a virtue for us. If we want to think about remembrances on a human level, we can say, we should remember our actions this past year—especially the good actions and the hurtful actions. The High Holidays provide us with the gift to deeply reflect on our lives in order that we may become better people and achieve more of our potential. We can also think about the merito-rious acts of our ancestors and use those memories to inspire us to try and follow in their footsteps.

Shofarot (The Shofar) has many meanings. First, the sound of the shofar is sup-posed to serve as a spiritual alarm clock—Rosh Hashanah is here, it’s time to reflect and repent. Don’t miss this opportunity! The sound of the shofar also points to deep feelings we have that are inexpressible. We have feelings of great joy, love, gratitude, as well as feelings of pain, bitterness, and disappointment. We should try to acknowl-edge our deep feelings and think about ways we can channel them to help us make changes in our lives for the better.

Three things to do, and three things to think about. May we fill all of our days – especially those around the High Holidays – with righteous actions, serious reflec-tion, and self-improvement.

Tamara, Lily, Ben, Nathan, and I wish you and your families, our community, the Jewish people, and all people of good will – a happy, healthy, and sweet New Year.

L’shalom.

Shalom. As we say goodbye to summer and

enter the Days of Awe, we naturally reflect on the year we’ve had as individuals and as a community. My thoughts lately have been about our community – Temple Beth Israel.

Last year I had the opportunity to travel to Eastern Europe. I found it a

difficult trip because I came face-to-face with what happened in the Holocaust. The stories of the places I heard and read about suddenly became very real. No matter how beautiful or how interesting, I couldn’t stop thinking of my fellow Jews who were murdered. One of the cities that was of particular interest to me was Prague, a beautiful and historic city. Our friend Joan Hulkower was born there and was, thank God, lucky enough to escape to America with her mother, father and sister Doris. Her mother’s parents weren’t so lucky. Hitler liked Prague. He made sure none of the synagogues was destroyed because he wanted them to be the museums of the extinct Jews. In Prague he almost got his wish. Most of the beautiful synagogues are museums! They are inscribed with the names of those who perished; and they are filled with silver Yads, Crowns, Torahs and other beautiful symbols too numerous to count. The Jewish Community in Prague has a population of about 2,000. Some say the number is as high as 10,000 but they are unregistered.

The trip to Prague made me realize how important the Jewish community is to our very existence. We at Temple Beth Israel have a beautiful and thriving community. Our membership is growing and consists of families of all ages. We all joined TBI for different reasons: our children went or are going to preschool; our friends are here; our children are going to have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah; we like the Rabbi; we like the Cantor; we are Conservative. No matter why we joined we became part of the larger community.

What do we have to offer? A lot! You just have to take advantage of it! It’s all here for the taking and the giving. You can attend Shabbat Services and join us for Kiddush. We have a Sunday Morning Minyan. Join us for Friday Night live. The High Holidays are almost here and Rabbi Mishkin’s sermons are sure to be quite moving. Come hear our new Cantor, Sharon Grainer, chant traditional and new melodies. Temple Beth Israel is here for your life cycle events: Aufrufs, Weddings, Brit Milah, Baby Namings, Funerals and Yarzheits. We come together as a community to be present for each other.

I would be remiss if I didn’t let you know about our

schools. Our Preschool is thriving with enrollment in the Two’s Class beating our expectations. The Religious School provides the Jewish education and experiences to become a B’nai Mitzvah and more. TBI High is a wonderful experience for our children. Our Youth Group adds a special dimension to our children’s Jewish education.

Tikum Olam is in our DNA at TBI. Here are some of the ways you can become involved and give. Our Social Action Committee is in full swing we can always use more volunteers. Mostly Mitzvahs enters its 18th year! We could always use a few extra drivers. You could deliver a Shabbat meal to one of our congregants who is ill. Of course you can always attend a Shiva Minyan to support a congregant who has lost a loved one. TANS (Tikkun Alliance for the North Shore) provides so much to our LI communities. Please respond to their calls for donations.

Our Scholar-in-Residence program is a wonderful opportunity for learning. Sisterhood has presented amazing programs. Our Library Committee is very active and features famous Jewish authors throughout the year.

Our Board of Trustees is a wonderful group of people who have stepped up to serve our community. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for volunteering.

TBI is a wonderful community. We are all very fortunate to be a part of it.

L’Shanah Tova to you and to your families.Remember–Be Enriched, Be Inspired, Belong

Remembering a Powerful TBI Voice Who Stepped Up and Always Made a DifferenceBy Mark A. Schneider, TBI Tablet Editor-at-Large

We will never forget her…When we joined Temple Beth Israel,

as some of us did around 1978, we no doubt looked forward to all the positive parts of being in a synagogue family. Meeting and making what would become lifetime friends, attending religious services, participating in social and other synagogue events and programs, seeing children through nursery, Hebrew school, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, maybe even wedding celebrations, they’re just some examples. Positive experiences no doubt, but in life, as we know, we can face loss as well. Loss of grandparents, parents, other family members… and friends. Facing and dealing with loss are probably not reasons why one joins a synagogue like Temple Beth Israel but when faced with a loss, one can sincerely appreciate what it means to have TBI in your family.

Some people step up in various ways. Some of us through the years take a more active role in the synagogue and accept the challenges that go along with being highly involved in maintaining and building a strong religious institution. In the forty-plus years of being actively involved in our synagogue, Beverly Hazelkorn was one of the major voices we heard and positively responded to.

On this particular hot, mid-summer July day, no one in the synagogue wanted to be there in the sanctuary. Certainly no one who knew Beverly wanted to be sitting in the sanctuary surrounded by a crowd that was comparable to the first day of Rosh Hashanah. But for one of the rare times when our shul brought people together for a synagogue funeral, one realized just how warmly inclusive our remarkable TBI family is at a time of need.

The uncountable times that Beverly spoke to us from the bimah as synagogue President and as Education

Vice President, her powerful voice spoke words that made an impact. And on a day when we sadly gathered to remember and reflect on her life, it was left to her family—her children Todd and Alyse, her husband Steve, her sisters Arlene and Carol, and to Rabbis Mishkin and Paltiel to beautifully speak the words that sadly and emotionally touched us.

No doubt, everyone who has been touched by Beverly during her lifetime has a fond memory, or two, or three…On a personal note, Beverly and I spent countless hours working on numerous synagogue projects together. During her Presidential years, I served as her Vice President of Fund Raising and appreciated her support of various projects I undertook, including journals, galas, comedy programs, as well as ongoing support of our TBI RePort monthly bulletin. For years, Beverly, along with Steve continued advertising their respective businesses in the bulletin. When I asked her for accounting services for my advertising agency and beauty salon businesses, I

knew I could count on her professional expertise… even when she jokingly and repeatedly asked, “so who are all the Associates at Schneider & Associates?” Her wonderful family was always warm, friendly and inclusive.

Beverly Hazelkorn’s work in education has not only made a difference at TBI but at a number of other synagogues that called on her expertise. She also helped TBI’s Hazak group, including writing a wonderful bulletin article a few years ago following a group trip to the off-Broadway production “Bad Jews.”

For decades, we looked forward to concluding synagogue services on Yom Kippur with a break fast drink of Hazelkorn family-sponsored Orange Juice. Drinking in that cup of OJ this year will be especially difficult…but enjoying that first sip will be a tasteful memory of Beverly’s inspiring voice and of the wonderful years she gave all of us.

How Do I Transfer Stock to TBI?Whether it is membership, a capital campaign pledge or a donation, the Main Office is often asked how do I make a stock transfer to TBI.

1. Please email the main office with the name of the stock and the number of shares. We ask that because our brokerage house Schwab will lump together stock transfer and they are not able to identify whom they are from. Just the stock and number of shares.

2. We will either call you or email you the DCC clearing number and the Schwab account number.

3. You will then contact your broker and initiate a transfer to the TBI account.

4. Please save all documentation for tax purposes.

Religious School ReflectionsBy Rachel Barnehama, Director of Education & Engagement

Hinei ma tov u’ma na’im shevet achim gam yachad How good and how pleasing it is when brothers dwell together!

In Ron Wolfson’s book The Relational Judaism Handbook, he questions the need for the word Gam, meaning also. The sentence could easily have been written ‘Hinei ma tov u’ma na’im shevet achim yachad’ and it would have had the same meaning. So why the word gam? “The Zohar, offers an explanation: What is the meaning of

shevet achim gam yachad? The word gam (in the expression gam yachad, “together”) signifies the inclusion of the Shechi-na (the divine presence) with them (Zohar 3:59b). In other words, when we sit as one, when we are not separated from each other, each in our own atomistic bubble, when we truly come together face-to-face, each of us a tzelem Elohim, a human being fashioned in the image of God, it is in this relationship, in this “between,” where the Shechina—God’s presence—can be found. The word gam, “also,” means that when we are present with each other, God is also present.1” As the Religious School year quickly approaches, I have been thinking a lot about why it is that we invest so much time in being here in this space learning together. I have had many conversations with parents about the benefits of being in Religious School vs home tutoring. Learning to-gether in a classroom community allows us to reflect, to work in chevrutah, and then to share back our thoughts and find-ings with the greater classroom community and beyond. The benefits for our students are tremendous: developing personal values and beliefs, questioning and struggling together, navi-gating conversation and debate, working through questions of identity, culture and our family roots; discovering who they are and where they come from. This is the benefit of the full Religious School experience, and as such reflects the vital need for Jewish education lived in community. I recently returned from a family trip to Alaska. One of my favorite parts of traveling is the chance to speak with locals. I was amazed at how small some of the towns we visited were and how far apart people live from one another (very different from our life on Long Island). Skagway, a small town known for the Klondike Gold Rush, has a year round population of around 400 (on a good year). People live spread out in the valley, miles away from each other. Yet, they get

together regularly on the weekends for fish cookouts and to play music. They were vivacious, optimistic, and most of all a unified community that relied on each other. They find every way possible to come together and work in community to help each other.

With the new year just around the corner, I challenge you to consider how you and your children might cultivate these kinds of relationships – with the text, with their teacher, within their peer group. Can this be done alone? What do we see the future of Jewish education looking like? How will we achieve our goals together? As we enter into the Jewish new year, I invite you all to be partners with me, with the clergy, with each other and most importantly with your children as we embark on a year filled with new learning, reflection and growth on this Jewish journey. I look forward to an incred-ible year of collaboration so that we may be in community together and allow the Shechinah to be in our presence.

New Initiatives at the Religious School

It has been a very busy summer since joining the Temple Beth Israel community as the Director of Education and Engagement in July 2018. I am anxiously awaiting the ar-rival of our students for the first day of Religious School on September 16! CAARI–Canadian American Active Retirees in IsraelAn Alternative and Meaningful Winter in IsraelBy Joan Hulkower

For many years Bernie and I spent our winters with CAARI in Israel. I went back this past winter for the first time alone but never alone. Old friends, new friends and so many new sites to see made the trip as meaningful as ever. It was great to have Sondra Winder join the group and be hosted by her relatives.

If you are tired of the Northeast winter and looking for an alternative to Florida this Israel Experience is your answer. This unique program is designed for the over 50 age group. It offers volunteering, touring of both classic and unusual sites, as well as lectures from outstanding speakers. The group stays in Tel Aviv for a few weeks and this is a big part of the Active element of CAARI. This is when you have the opportunity

to do volunteer work in Israel and Bernie and I always found this time especially rewarding. It’s generally four days a week for four hours each day and the fifth day is spent in JNF forests, pruning trees, painting picnic tables and maintaining the forests. Bernie tutored English and loved coming back to see the students and teachers every year. He always ended up with many love letters. I went back to the Rehab Center where I helped serve breakfast, collate admis-sion packets, and walk with patients who needed the exercise. Others volun-teered at the Botanical Garden.

Touring with the CAARI program on comfortable buses captures the Israeli spirit as you travel from the green hills of the Galilee to the beautiful desert

scenery of the Negev and Arava. Visit Archeological and historical sites, Museums, JNF projects and hike nature preserves.

The program is flexible. I like to avoid as much of the winter as possible and go for the full 6 weeks but there are shorter options of 22, 29 and 34 days. We are fortunate to have two very expe-rienced leaders, Susan Horwitz a 24/7 trip director and Neil Eisenstadt a top guide and co -director of the program. Both have led the program for almost 20 years which will have it’s 36th an-niversary this coming winter.

For more information you can visit www.caarivolunteers.com or call me 516 -883-4654.
