Welcome to our Fall edition of the SCWW Program Guide. We know it has been a long few months for everyone, and we hope that some of you were able to get out this summer to enjoy a bit of sunshine!

As social distancing restrictions are still in place, most of The Good Companions staff continue to work from home. We are working closely with Ottawa Public Health and the Ontario Ministry of Health to create comprehensive health and safety procedures for when we do re-open the centre. Unfortunately this means that we will need to post-pone our Voice-to-Face party. We will miss seeing everyone, and look forward to a time when we can get together again.

I do want to take this opportunity to thank all of our dedicated volunteers and students that have been invaluable in making sure that we have been able to provide such great programming three times a day over the last six months.

As always, we have a jam-packed program guide for you, with lots of opportunities throughout the week to join. Once you have reviewed the guide, please contact us to register for activities. If we have not heard from you, we will reach out at the end of August and beginning of September to register for the fall term.

A Guiding Light: The Cape North Lighthouse

For hundreds of years, lighthouses have helped to guide mariners safely to

their destinations. With the longest coastline in the world, Canada once had

many light towers marking its shores. I will share some stories from the long

and colourful history of one such marker, the Cape North lighthouse which

now sits far from the sea in the park at the Canada Science and Technology

Museum.

Art Talk with the Ottawa Art Gallery We are thrilled to have the Ottawa Art Gallery returning this fall with three new exhibits.

The Inside of Elephants and All Kings of Things This exhibition celebrates the poignantly playful multimedia practice of Canadian artist Russell Yuristy, focusing mainly on the dynamic period between 1970 and 1990. Throughout this period, Yuristy crafted a whimsical portrait of the natural world, rural culture and his place in both; emerging as one of the most unique Canadian anti-establishment artists. Thursday, September 24 2:45-3:45 PM

Rhythmscape “Rhythmanalysis” is a way of listening to the various layers of “noise” and “silence” of urban spaces. This type of knowledge provides greater understanding of how society functions, and ultimately offers reforms and improvements. This exhibition positions today's contemporary artists as de facto “rhythmanalysts”: agents who understand and react to society's nuances. Thursday, October 22 2:45-3:45 PM

Inaabiwin— “The Art of Seeing” This travelling group exhibition featured works created by contemporary Indigenous artists and was curated by Danielle Printip. In Anishinaabemowin, according to the “Elders of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabegu, the word inaabiwin can be interpretted as “the art of seeing,” reflecting the complexitities of relating to the surrounding world.

Music— Chatting About Music with Brian

Brian McGurrin is a retired librarian and a music enthusiast! Join him as he takes us on a musical journey of songs and fun facts.

Wonderful Woodwinds

The 1986 film, The Mission, tells the story of Spanish efforts to establish a mission in the Paraguayan jungle, and to convert the native Guaraní community to Christianity. The Guaraní were not initially receptive to Christianity, or to outsiders in general: so they fastened one of the missionaries to a wooden cross and sent him to his death over the Iguazu Falls. A Spanish Jesuit, Father Gabriel, then travels to the Falls, climbs to the top, and plays his oboe; and the Guaraní warriors are so captivated by the music that they allow him to live. Message? Music is magical and powerful! Please join with us to listen to some magical and powerful music performed on some of the better known types of wood-winds (no bagpipes, I promise) and hear a bit more about what makes these instruments so wonderful.

You’re a Mean One Mr Grinch

The songs of the Christmas season come in all shapes and sizes. There are Christmas hymns like O Holy Night; songs about snow and ice, like Baby It’s Cold Outside; songs about Santa and his reindeer, like Santa Claus Is Coming to Town; songs about bells like Carol of the Bells; songs about gifts like Santa Baby (just leave a sable under the tree, for me); and even some cartoon characters like Charlie Brown and Linus. My personal favourites would certainly include music about the nativity, like the Pastoral Symphony from Handel's Messiah, and Mahalia Jackson's Sweet Little Jesus Boy, which was always playing on the car radio during our annual Christmas Eve visits to Parliament Hill with our kids to marvel at the Christmas lights and decorations. I hope you can join in to listen to the stories behind the best Christmas music (nothing by the Chipmunks).
