How the story continued…How the story continued…• In May 2005, visited CALIS Center and gave
presentations at PKU and TsingHua Univ., through HKCAN recommendation
• Received New Direction/Librarian III Award at CUL • Invited to join an informal seminar with several serials
catalogers and managers of university libraries in Beijing
• After this seminar, was recruited as member of CALIS Expert Committee; in charge of serials cataloging for western languages and giving training sessions for CALIS members
• Per CUL UL invitation, I gave a presentation on this training at the Staff Forum and some slides as follows

Target audienceTarget audience
• Catalogers/managers of CALIS member libraries
• CALIS (China Academic Library & Information System)– like RLIN/OCLC in China– hosted in Peking University Library– 500 member libraries; more than 96%--
university libraries
55
Target audienceTarget audience
• CALIS Union Catalog– Database was established in 1997– Officially started in 2000– 1st union catalog to support record uploading– More than 1,600,000 bibliographic records
and 6,300,000 holdings records created
• 163 catalogers/TS managers were trained in this training
66
Training ManualTraining Manual
• More than 450 powerpoint slides were created and used/translated + exercises/answers of 12 sessions
• Bilingual manual: Chinese/English• Translation team:
– CUL: Charlene + three CU graduate students from mainland China
– CALIS + PKU library: three librarians/managers
77
ChallengesChallenges• Language/culture barriers
– Need accurate translation of library jargon used in China
– Simplified scripts of Chinese– Cultural/political subtlety, e.g. National library– Hard to translate certain new terms, e.g.
aggregator neutral record
• Diverse needs of trainees– Unwilling to have needs survey beforehand– Some very experienced but some not
88
ChallengesChallenges• Big group: hard to have any group
discussion or discussion in depth; trainer still asked questions and made training more interactive
• I was the only trainer for almost four days, and had no training partner or assistant
• Most trainees preferred to ask individual questions during breaks, so some questions were repeated and the trainer hardly had any break…
99
What’s unforgettable…What’s unforgettable…
• Certain trainees’ hunger for learning
• Good questions
• CALIS union catalog team: expertise and efficiency
• Hospitality…yummy meals
• Friendship

PCCPCC
• PCC Strategic Directions for 2006–2010: three out of five statements related to globalization or training– Be a forward thinking, influential leader in the
global metadata community– Pursue globalization – Lead in the education and training of
catalogers

AnecdotesAnecdotes• Can I have your autograph?• You are like sunshine because you’re from
US???• Asked personal questions: your answers are like
movie stars’ answers…• Diversity of questions:
– What is AACR2? What is CONSER?
– Does CUL use SFX and link resolver?
– Can you give a brief introduction to CUL? Can you share CUL online documentation and SCARM?

ReflectionReflection
• More cataloging/metadata standards get international, so more training and exchange are needed in Asia now
• Focus on the needs of participants, e.g. more Chinese examples are helpful
• Sensitive to political issues but focus on the objective goals
• Lifetime lessons:– Empathic intelligence: to put myself in their shoes – Teaching is the best way of learning
