PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEThis past summer has been incredibly productive.

We laid a strong foundation in many areas upon which we will continue to build throughout the year. Our Academic Council expanded and strengthened our already strong curriculum by adding new computer science and theology courses. A new program, “Freshman Academy,” was created to help provide our freshman students with a better way to transition into high school, to understand and to become a part of our school culture. As a part of this exciting program, we identified ten teachers to facilitate a teacher/student mentoring program, weekly meetings to facilitate student transitioning into high school, and monthly programs to instill school pride. As determined by our Middle States Accreditation team, excellence in

internal and external school communications is one of our goals. Beginning with this publication, we will be sending out a monthly newsletter to keep you updated and informed about why our mission and vision make us a successful institution.

As I open each week’s calendar and see how much fills each square, I am continually reminded of the many academic, athletic, extracurricular, and service activities that occur here each day. It is a great blessing in my life to be part of such a vibrant, caring school community.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEOur students returned this

month to a different place than they left in the spring. Our library has gone through a complete transformation into a state-of-the-art multimedia center. The morning news is now broadcast from a studio rebuilt with new lighting, green screens and wireless microphones. Our campus is now home to an Innovation Lab, mini-Mac

Lab, Coding Lab, and refurbished life science labs (Chemistry, Biology and Physics.)

We can now develop the Brothers’ House into a STREAM Center, offering classes with a STEM-based curriculum, in addition to arts and religion. This major innovation will require a large investment. If you are giving, thank you. Your gift has been well used. If you have not given back, please consider making Seton LaSalle one of your giving priorities. With existing and NEW support, we can have this school prepared and equipped for an exciting future. Please feel free to visit your campus for a personal tour.

Summer Facility UpgradesWe completed a

number of renovations and upgrades this summer while the students were out of school. From security upgrades to fresh paint and even major renovations, our facilities are in better shape than ever before.

SECURITYWe installed

security cameras surrounding the perimeter of the building, and fixed access pads to all entryways into the building, in addition to some select locations inside the school. These access pads allow students, faculty and staff to enter the building by simply tapping their ID badge to the access pad. All visitors will scan their drivers’ license or state-issued ID, which will provide our Security Officer Joe with a nearly instant background check before visitors enter the building.

NEW LOOKOur boys’ and girls’

locker rooms both received a face lift over the summer. The flooring in each locker room was painted gray and then topped with green, gold and white paint chips to brighten up the space and keep it consistent with SLS colors.

Several classrooms, particularly our freshman homerooms, were repainted and rearranged to allow for a more convenient space for our teachers, and a livelier learning environment for our students.

All but one of our science labs has been upgraded with fresh paint and new flooring, in addition to newer lab furniture.

NEW FURNISHINGIn remembrance of his

passing, generous donors were able to provide enough money to renovate Mr. Kramer’s former classroom. The room is now fitted with new desks and chairs.

Several of our first-floor classrooms got new chairs and desks, some of which were donated from St. Mary of the Mount due to their school closing.

TECHNOLOGYAll classrooms were

fitted with new SHARP Aquos Boards, which replaced outdated SmartBoards. The Aquos boards have more interactive c a p a b i l i t i e s for teachers to integrate new technology into

their curriculum. Our former library, under

construction to become the Kay Murdy Media Center, will feature a new, state-of-the-art Google JAMboard, allowing students to engage in collaborative learning.

The production studio in the Innovation Lab received all new equipment this summer, including a new camera and green screen, along with wireless microphones students can clip to their clothes. This means students can now watch a live-stream of morning announcements on the Aquos board in their homerooms. The production studio also received six new Mac computers to assist in production needs.

SLS colors pop on the boys’ locker room floor after it was painted this summer.

Studio-grade equipment completed our student production studio.

Chuck Meyers, ‘61 and wife Georgia celebrated 50 years together on May 7, 2017. Mass and reception were held at their parish church, St. Columbkille in Imperial, Pa. A trip to San Diego followed!

1970sPaul Steigerwald, ‘72, worked

alongside Bob Errey as television announcer of Pittsburgh Penguins games. After the Penguins’ 2016-17 Stanley Cup victory, Steigerwald stepped aside from his role, but will continue to work with the Penguins organization, assisting with Pens TV and radio.

Tony Ferrieri, ‘74 will be designing the scenery for a new play, “Feeding the Dragon” by Sharon Washington at Hartford Stage in January 2018. The play will then move to Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City in March 2018.

David Morehouse, ‘78, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Congratulations on two back-to-back Stanley Cup Championship titles! The Penguins will raise their second Stanley Cup Champions banner at their first home game of the regular season on October 4.

2000sRalph Gigliotti, ‘03 recently

completed his PhD in Communication at Rutgers University. His dissertation is entitled, “The Social Construction of Crisis in Higher Education: Implications for Crisis Leadership Theory and Practice.”

2010sDave O’Brien, ‘11 is becoming a

recognized name in the Pittsburgh art scene. Over the summer, O’Brien live-painted an Andy Warhol portrait on a car in Market Square, Downtown as part of Pittsburgh’s Vintage Grand Prix. O’Brien also created a flugtag for Red Bull’s Flugtag event at this year’s Three Rivers Regatta.

Connor Hayes, ‘12, recently completed a one-year post-graduate service commitment with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Portland, Oregon, after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in May 2016. In Portland, Connor lived with seven other JVCs and offered meals and support to HIV-positive men and women who were homeless or living in transitional housing.

Connor will be in Pittsburgh for a year before starting law school at Stanford University for the 2018-19 school year.

Dale Clancy, ‘14 was a 2016-17 Preseason All-Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference (PSAC) Selection for his role on the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Men’s Basketball Team. He is expected to be a co-captain this year. Dale hopes to obtain a job in law enforcement upon graduation.

Levi Masua, ‘14, is expected to be a co-captain for the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Men’s Basketball team this year. He accepted a job with Chrsyler Corporation in Orlando, which he will start when he graduates from college.

Olivia Kisker, ‘14 graduated in three years from the I School at Syracuse University with a B.S. in Information Management and Technology. Olivia was one of just 22 students around the world selected to participate in Carnegie Mellon University’s IT Summer Security intensive at the Heinz College of Information Systems.

Olivia is back at Syracuse for the fall semester with a merit scholarship to earn a Certificate of Advanced Study in Cyber Security.

Several of our students completed their Eagle Scout projects on Seton LaSalle’s campus over the summer.

With the help of his friends, Mark Mitchell, ‘18 was able to transform the downtrodden area behind the former Brothers’ House in 123 man hours. Mitchell and volunteers removed graffiti from windows and landscaped the area, laying mulch, planting new flowers, and outlining flower beds with new bricks. Until this summer, the Brothers’ House held archives for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Within a year, Seton LaSalle hopes to transform the building into the STREAM Center, which will house classrooms and learning areas for STEM-based classes.

Also completing his Eagle Scout project at SLS is Zach Wells, ‘19. He transformed the Rebels Marching Band trailer, which is used to transport students’ instruments and equipment to and from football games and parades. The inside of the trailer was worn, and did not offer great security for student instruments.

Merrick Field also saw an upgrade from an Eagle Scout project. With the help of his father, Mike Allen, ‘18 built a new wooden staircase from the field to the press box, so that our public address announcer and any local media personnel no longer have to climb the hill to get to the press box.

Our sincerest thanks to our Eagle Scouts who are contributing to Seton LaSalle’s tradition of excellence.

National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists

Congratulations to Marcus Huetter, ‘18 and Henry Metzger, ‘18 who have been selected as semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program. All entrants for the scholarship contest are required to take a qualifying test, and semifinalists are chosen from the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents fewer than one percent of the total number of high school seniors in the United States.

Way to go, Marcus and Henry! May your hard work and dedication pay off.

Fall Drama“Arsenic and Old Lace”

November 11 - 7 p.m. • November 12 - 3 p.m.

Join us for this year’s Fall Drama, “Arsenic and Old Lace.” This year’s performance will be directed by Mr. Ed Rosenbusch, ‘11. This year marks Rosenbusch’s second year teaching at Seton LaSalle, after earning his B.A. from Seton Hill University for English Literature and Secondary Education. Ed participated in theater when he was an SLS student, and has appeared as Albert in “Bye, Bye Birdie,” and Reverend Parris in Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible,” among other shows. Ed is excited to be involved with the students’ Fall Drama production.

ABOUT THE SHOWAs drama critic Mortimer Brewster nears his

engagement with his next-door neighbor, Elaine, his world is sent spinning upon the discovery of a corpse in the home of his beloved aunts. Mortimer expereinces more drama than he ever thought possible as he learns of their deadly “hobby.” while dealing with one brother who believes he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and another who is a homicidal maniac. Maybe Mortimer should have a class of wine... or not.

Mike Wagner, ‘97, signs on as Rebels Baseball Head Coach

Seton LaSalle Catholic High School is pleased to announce the appointment of 1997 alumnus Mike Wagner to the role of the school’s Head Baseball Coach.

Wagner was part of a championship team at Seton LaSalle which earned a WPIAL championship, multiple section titles and various other distinctions from 1993-1997. Wagner was recruited by CCAC by then-head coach Kerry Hetrick where he played for a nationally ranked top-10 team. Wagner’s coaching experience includes numerous years coaching AAU youth teams including the TFM Rebels.

“Mike Wagner worked as hard on the field as he has at life,” said Kerry Hetrick who now serves as athletic director of Penn Trafford School District. “He’s an extraordinary motivator and I can’t think of a better example and role model for the players and the student body as a whole.”

Wagner plans to invigorate the baseball program at Seton LaSalle together with long-time coach, friend and mentor Chuck Rutter as assistant coach. At age 77, Rutter will return to coaching baseball at SLS after his retirement from doing so in 2007. Wagner has also appointed Brian Vogel (Seton LaSalle 1995) and Eddie Nassan (West Mifflin 1997 and CCAC teammate) to the coaching team for the upcoming season.
