Great and marvelous are thy works, OLord of hosts, almighty One! (B-232)

A great and marvelous work is about tocome forth unto the children of men …

I am convinced that the promise is inprocess, not completed

What makes this work so marvelous?

causing great wonder; extraordinary.• synonyms: amazing, astounding, astonishing,

awesome, breathtaking, sensational, remarkable,spectacular, stupendous, staggering, stunning;phenomenal, prodigious, miraculous,extraordinary, incredible, unbelievable;wondrous

1. It is a work of God• Everything he does is great and marvelous

• Look at nature around us and in us

2. It is beyond our scope ofunderstanding and conception• “What a strange way to save the world.”

3. How he does it.• D&C 1:4: the weak things of the world to be used

to break down the mighty and strong …

• 1 Corinthians 1:26-29: not many wise, not manymighty, but the foolish, the despised, the base, tobring to naught the mighty, that no flesh glory inhis presence

• 1 Nephi 3:226-228: numbers and dominion of thechurch of God were small …

• Part of the reason this is called a strange act

Only three places in scripture I can find• Isaiah 28:21 – Lord purges his people of

wickedness and sets up a righteous standard

• D&C 92:1c – sends his apostles to prune thevineyard for last time and pours out his Spirit onall flesh

• D&C 98:12e – that no one is left with an excuseand the wise and rulers hear and know what theyhad never considered

Isaiah 28 tells the story wellAddressed to Ephraim

• On their head is a crown of pride

• Drunkards

• These people (especially the leaders) wereproud, undisciplined, out of control

Isaiah 28:3 Lord will act to punish theproud drunkards• Take away their crown of pride

• Walk all over the drunks

• Tear away the façade of beauty like a hard freezeon flower petals

Isaiah 28:7-8 They have erred and refuseinstruction• Out of the way and houses are full of vomit/filth

Isaiah 28:5-6 The Lord of hosts becomestheir crown of glory and a diadem ofbeauty

Isaiah 28:16-17 Lay a foundation stone ofZion, a cornerstone to build upon; and setup lines and a plumb line to keep it allstraight and true

Isaiah 28:9-13 They would not hear him• He tried to teach them

• Refused to learn knowledge or doctrine

• Even when he feed them a little at a time

• They were broken on what they refused

Isaiah 28:2 The Lord will use one mightyand strong to undo the rebels
