For almost 40 years Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts have been thrilling discerning guests with their luxury properties and personalised service.

The largest deluxe-hotel group in Asia Pacific, the success

of the brand has generated expansion throughout the

Middle East and Australia, with forays

into the Seychelles, Austria, France, UK, Turkey and Russia

all currently under way.

The name Shangri-La is inspired by a fictional paradise

in James Hilton’s 1933 novel, Lost Horizon. When you book

with Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts,

your dream holiday – one that you previously thought could

only exist in your imagination – will become an idyllic reality.

Whether you’re looking to be cast away to a secluded

island with sugar-white sands and lucid seas, or if

you prefer the pulsating pace of a city offering endless

sightseeing and shopping opportunities, they have it

covered. Then again, you may just be after unadulterated

pampering in one of their award-winning CHI Spas.

No matter where your sense of curiosity takes you,

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts will tailor-make a foolproof

journey for you and your loved ones.

You’ll notice that two of their properties which debuted

last year have already made it onto the Conde Naste 2010

Hot list. The sporty Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa in

the Maldives is perfect for couples with a zest for life, while

the Shangri-La Boracay Resort and Spa in the Philippines

is for those lusting after a destination off the beaten track.

Both will take your breath away. Island retreats are expected

to have one dazzling beach, but the Boracay Resort has two.

Then again, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts have never

done anything in half measures.

Most of their hotels offer an Horizon Club, so get with the

programme. Seasoned travellers who aspire to even higher

levels of service and special privileges, will benefit from

Club floor check-in and outs, a deluxe room with thoughtful

extras such as personalised voicemail, complimentary

broadband internet, suit pressing, shoe shining, beverages

on the house, and club lounge access with fortifying

breakfasts, books and board games.

Stay at Shangri-La by booking with Kanoo Travel, you will

not be disappointed.

Welcome to the world of Shangri-La

Why should I stay here?

City slickers who enjoy being in the thick of things will

love this gleaming hotel, which is within easy reach of

the airport.

Which room should I book?

The Presidential Suite has a spectacular spiral

staircase to sweep you up to the master bedroom. Less

lavish but equally attractive, the beds in the Horizon

Premier rooms are situated in a curved alcove against

a cream leather partition.

What can I do while staying here?

In a city where shopping is virtually a competitive

sport, you’re well placed to visit designer label havens

The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. Tie in a trip

to the former with a journey to the top of Burj Khalifa

(courtesy of a supersonic elevator). It’s the world’s

tallest building, towering almost a kilometre above

the Arabian desert. Get back down to earth by visiting

the souks in Bur Dubai and hone your haggling skills

to bag Arabic souvenirs or some glittering gold items.

Eating out is also a national pastime. The Shangri-la’s

Amwaj is an award-winning seafood restaurant while

its Moroccan outlet, Marrakech, offers a fine example

of true Arabian hospitality.

Why should I stay here?

With the Maldives long earmarked as the world’s most

desirable honeymoon destination, this ocean retreat

offers ample stretches of empty beach on which to

soak up the sun.

Which room should I book?

Being an all-villa resort, your choice depends on

whether you’re trying to channel your inner Tarzan

and Jane – in which case, opt for a tropical tree house

gazing at the sea over a tamed jungle – or, if you fancy

yourself as Daryl Hannah’s plucky character in the

film Splash and need easy (and regular) access to

the ocean, a villa hovering right over the water will

be ideal. For a particularly private honeymoon, look

no further than Villa Laalu. With cascading water

features, a huge pool, timber-decked verandas and

in-villa dining available 24/7, you’ll never want, or

need, to leave.

What can I do while staying here?

CHI, The Spa is an entire village offering hours of ‘me

time’. Happy couples will have trouble fitting in all the

available activities, which include surfing, scuba diving,

kayaking, sailing and deep-sea fishing. You could even

wake up one morning and pop a question of an entirely

different nature: ‘Fancy lunch on the equator today,

darling?’ A luxury yacht can make this happen.

Why should I stay here?

Sun worshippers can cram in a little culture at this

stunning seafront abode.

Which room should I book?

The speciality suites with cooling marble and mosaic

bathrooms and separate walk-in monsoon showers

are the prefect antidote to a long sticky day spent on

the beach.

What can I do while staying here?

Shangri-La Qaryat al Beri overlooks the spectacular

Sheikh Zayed Mosque – the third largest in the world. It

is also home to the world’s biggest hand-woven carpet,

made out of a whopping 35 tonnes of wool and cotton.

The mosque holds public tours at 10am from Sundays

to Thursdays. There’s a sophisticated and, more

importantly, air-conditioned souk right next door to the

hotel and no less than five swimming pools flanking

the health club, yoga room and Arabian-inspired CHI

spa. Guests can also partake in traditional abra rides

on the meandering 700-metre-long waterway. For

a further taste of local flavour, indulge in the Arabic

buffet at Sofra Bid. Alternatively, at the Vietnamese

outlet, Hoi An, supersized prawns are flown in from the

Mekong river direct to the dinner table.

Why should I stay here?

The quintessential weekend break, a mere 48 hours in

this secluded sanctuary will instil you with a new zest

for life.

Which room should I book?

There are three distinct hotels in one here. Al Waha

is the family-friendly zone, complete with a winding

waterway and inflatables; Al Bandar, home to

late-night lounges, is for couples or groups wishing

to make the most of the sultry evenings; while the

six-starred Al Husn, up on the hill, suits those after

something a little more private and dramatic.

What can I do while staying here?

The spectacle of an adult female turtle hoisting itself

from the ocean to lay eggs on the golden sands – as

this prehistoric species has done for millennia – is an

awe-inspiring one. If you’re staying at the Shangri-la’s

Barr al Jissah resort, all you have to do is leave your

room number with the concierge and the resort’s

designated Turtle Ranger will then alert you to any

turtle action taking place on the beach. Oman’s several

varieties, including the green turtle, loggerhead,

hawksbill and olive ridley, all return annually to fill

sandy nests with hundreds of eggs.

Why should I stay here?

Shopaholics who want to save their energy for sifting

through designer labels will love the location of this

hotel near to Tokyo’s most famous shopping district.

Which room should I book?

The Horizon Deluxe Bay View rooms not only have

vistas to die for, there’s a perfectly placed chaise

lounge just under the window for hours of viewing

pleasure.

What can I do while staying here?

The Ginza doesn’t only have enough designer stores

to give your credit card a cramp; it is also Tokyo’s

definitive entertainment district with a hotchpotch

of boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, theatres,

nightclubs and cafes. One of the most expensive

pieces of real estate in Japan, one square metre here

is worth over ten million yen (more than 100,000 US

dollars). The site of a silver coin mint from 1612 – 1800,

it evolved as an upmarket shopping district following

1923’s Great Kanto Earthquake. Points of interest

include Ginza Wako with its clock tower still in tact,

the Sony building, a shrine to technology, and three

huge department stores all starting with the letter ‘M’:

Mitsukoshi, Matsuya and Matsuzakaya.

Why should I stay here?

For those who prefer their cities clean and green as

opposed to smoky and congested, sparkling Singapore

should be your first port of call.

Which room should I book?

In the Valley Wing deluxe room you can enjoy a cool

drink while you watch the crimson sun slinking down

and Singapore’s stunning skyline firing up.

What can I do while staying here?

Given the hotel’s location on the celebrated Orchard

Road, you’ll want to start off here, perusing its mixture

of high-end designer shops and hip boutiques like

Wisma Atria and Paragon. Then hit China Town for

seaweed, souvenirs and slippers, followed by Haji Lane

for Indie items. To get back to nature, at Underwater

World, one of the city’s most visited attractions, you

can actually join the tiger sharks and stingrays in the

aquarium by diving down to join them (while waving

at the other tourists snapping away at you). For

something a little more sedate, a stroll through the

flourishing Botanical Gardens is a very civilised way

to while away an afternoon. Don’t forget to sample the

renowned Singaporean chilli crab – you’ll fall hook,

line and sinker for this sweet meat.

Why should I stay here?

It’s unsurprising this devastatingly beautiful tropical

resort features on Conde Nast’s 2010 Hot List.

Cerulean seas seduce divers while its hilly landscape

is ideal for hiking enthusiasts. Alternatively, you can

just use the gorgeous location to get high on love.

Which room should I book?

Sprinkled across thickly forested hills, the palm

fringed pool villas, complete with raised wooden

tanning decks, a plunge pool and private butler

service, are the stuff that dreams are made of.

What can I do while staying here?

A diver’s nirvana, Boracay Island presents some of

the most exciting underwater opportunities in the

world. Better still, diving is available all year round.

Whether you’re more interested in getting up close

and personal with smaller parrot fish and ribbon

eels in the shallower dive spots, or your heart is set

on reef sharks, blue spotted stingrays, sea turtles

and psychedelic coral, the resort’s dive school, which

offers scuba for experienced divers and beginners, will

ensure you’re in for an exhilarating visual treat.

For those who prefer to keep their head above water,

Boracay is set within one of the island’s serene nature

reserves, with hours of exploratory walking at your

disposal.

Why should I stay here?

Manilians are obsessed with shopping. Shopping and

eating, that is. What’s not to like about this wonderfully

chaotic archipelago?

Which room should I book?

The Executive suites have blanket views of the Ayala

Avenue, so you can calmly watch the frenzied world

below in comfort.

What can I do while staying here?

The star attraction at The Marikina City Footwear

Museum is First Lady Imelda Marcos’ extensive shoe

collection – thousands of pairs of size eight and a half

shoes. She may be remembered as a symbol of the

corrupt extravagance of her husband’s political reign,

but a small part of you will be coveting the world’s

biggest set of shoes.

Thankfully, the hotel’s location in Makati, the hip and

happening heart of Manila, is where international

fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Bvlgari rub

shoulders with home grown labels like Bayo and

coveted shoe-designer Rusty Lopez. The interspersion

of cheap and cheerful Shoe Marts ensures you needn’t

buy shoes at the expense of an entire nation. For

wardrobe inspiration, head to Serendra where fashion

mavens can be found performing a balancing act with

their skinny lattes and the latest designer handbags.

Why should I stay here?

Nature-lovers with kids in tow will be enthralled by

the squeaky clean beaches and the nearby Jumalon

Butterfly Sanctuary.

Which room should I book?

All the rooms of this newly renovated resort have

been bestowed with a fresh new complexion, but the

champagne-coloured Ocean Wing Panorama room is

particularly light and bright with sweeping sea views.

What can I do while staying here?

The only danger of bringing your children here is that

they’ll probably refuse to get onto the plane back

home. The Adventure Zone, a multi-level playground

separated into three age levels, offers daily activities,

while the Toddler’s Zone will ensure younger sprogs

are safe and satisfied. Teens, meanwhile, will think

their birthdays have come early with video arcades,

table soccer and pool tables all available in the E-Zone.

Adults can use this opportunity to switch off completely

in the childfree Chi, The Spa, or soak up some rays on

the pristine arced beach. For family fun, there are golf

competitions, fish feeding at the marine sanctuary,

underwater safaris and visits to what is Cebu’s most

popular haunt, the multi-coloured Jumalon Butterfly

sanctuary.

Romantics will be swept away by the hotel’s proximity

to the splendid Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong’s outright

focal point.

Which room should I book?

Insist on a harbour view room. Every evening at 8

o’clock, Hong Kong shows off its brighter side with all

the buildings illuminated in a symphony of lights.

What can I do while staying here?

It’s ‘ship ahoy!’ for swashbuckling seafarers with a trip

on an original wooden Chinese junk boat, complete

with huge red sails billowing in the wind. Aqua Luna

at Tsin Sha Tsui Public Pier 1 offers daily harbour

trips, but if you’re there on the week end you can sail

to Stanley Island 90 minutes away, taking in the linear

skyline as you recline on a sofa bed with a cold beer. At

Stanley market you’ll find nifty coasters with Chairman

Mao prints, while the waterfront stores sell more

upmarket clothes. Sunday lunch at one of the many

wharfside cafes is an institution – as is queuing up at

Gino’s for a sinful gelato.

Why should I stay here?

Those with a sense of adventure and a head for heights

will revel in Hong Kong’s elevated pursuits.

Which room should I book?

Your lofty position in the hills is highlighted even more

dazzlingly in an Horizon Peak View room – so close

to the famed Peak tram that you can almost see the

delighted expressions on the passengers’ faces.

What can I do while staying here?

Tens of millions of people from across the globe have

partaken in the Peak Tram’s virtually vertical joyride

since its first commercial operation took off in 1888.

For a different sort of ride, make your way to Mid-

levels where you’ll discover that the escalator is the

most popular form of transportation in Hong Kong.

Yes, really. The longest outdoor escalator system in the

world – it’s actually 20 escalators and three moving

walkways – is used by thousands of commuters every

day. They also offer plenty of points worth hopping off

at for shopping, eating and general sightseeing.

Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai

Why should I stay here?

High-flyers who demand the best things in life won’t

be happy anywhere other than this shimmering slab

of brilliance slap bang in the centre of where China’s

extraordinary economic story began.

Which room should I book?

Depending on whether you’re after old-school

glamour or lustrous opulence, you can opt for a room

in the River Wing or the Grand Tower, respectively.

With 54 square feet rooms, the Grand Tower boasts

the largest non-suite rooms in Shanghai. You can

also refine your choice according to what type of

view you’d prefer: the bustling Bund, the soothing

Huangpu River, or Pudong’s glittering skyline.

What can I do while staying here?

The iconic Bund, also known as the Zhongshan Dong

Yi Lu, is a pulsating waterfront and an essential part

of Shanghai both strategically and historically.

Originally a stretch used by Europeans, Americans

and the Japanese who constructed their banks,

trading houses, hotels and consulates here, the

conflation of architectural styles, especially the old

colonial-era buildings, is intriguing. Directly opposite

the hotel on the west shore, you’ll spy the Oriental

Pearl TV Tower and the Jin Mao Tower.

Why should I stay here?

History buffs are can retrace the beguiling past of a

city that is progressing at a giddying pace.

Which room should I book?

The Premier rooms are so spacious you don’t need to

fork out for a suite.

What can I do while staying here?

Nothing can prepare you for the awesome scale of the

Forbidden City. Always intended as much more than

a palace, the whole court, from the emperors down,

were caught up in an unremitting litany of ritual and

ceremony. Some of that taste for grandeur is played

out in Tiananmen Square, the world’s largest public

gathering space, which is etched in our memories

as the site of 1989’s pro-democracy demonstrations.

Around this titanic square you’ll locate The Great Hall

of the People, the Mao Mausoleum (his embalmed

body lies in a crystal coffin) and the National Museum

where, in the waxwork gallery, China’s leaders and

dignitaries have been joined by a solitary western star

– David Beckham.

Other must-visits are the Xiushui Silk Market, one

of Beijing’s most popular clothes and accessories

markets, and the atmospheric Panjiayuan antiques

market, where to can pick up an exquisite bargain.

Why should I stay here?

For foodies who crave cuisine from all five of Asia’s

realms and beyond, Shangri-La World Hotel will open

your palette to a world of recherché tastes.

Which room should I book?

When in Beijing, it would appear somewhat churlish

not to check into the Beijing suite. No luxury is

spared in these presidential-level suites with crystal

chandeliers, domes ceilings, around the clock butler

service and marble bathrooms with sunken

whirlpool baths.

What can I do while staying here?

Once you’ve indulged in the ‘food of Aphrodite’

(Tasmanian oysters) at Aria, the city’s finest Japanese

fare at the acclaimed Nadaman, some hearty

Cantonese cuisine at Summer Palace and belt-busting

confectionery at Gourmet Corner, you may want to

leave the hotel to explore. You’ll be familiar with the

‘Bird’s Nest’ from the television – the National Stadium

and stage for 2008’s Olympic Games – but it’s even

more impressive in the flesh. Winding 8,850 kilometres

from the East to West of the country, the Great Wall of

China is possibly the greatest architectural feat ever

achieved by mankind. You’ll need to walk its entire

length to burn off all those calories.

Why should I stay here?

Travellers who get a rush from losing themselves in

the streets and history of unruly cities – safe in the

knowledge that they have hot showers and sumptuous

beds to which to return – will find their nirvana here.

Which room should I book?

To instil yourself with the serene sense that you’re

not actually in a cacophonous city, request a room

overlooking the thickly foliaged garden bordering the

sparkling kidney-shaped pool.

What can I do while staying here?

Historical monuments abound. You can’t miss the 42-

metre high India Gate where a flame is kept burning in

memory of the 70,000 lives that were lost fighting for

the British army during WW1.

Ten minutes away, the foundations for Qutab Minar,

the highest tower in India, were laid way back in

1199 and it still stands strong as an Indo-Islamic

architectural wonder. In the Qutab complex you’ll

find several significant monuments including the Alai

Darwaza, the gateway built in 1310, and one of India’s

oldest existing mosques, Quwwat-ul-Islam.

The markets are fantastic for a sensory taste of New

Delhi, but for premium apparel, the Anokhi group

sell exquisite hand block printed and vegetable dyed

textiles.
