What’s It Like: The World Through the Eyes of Someone with Dementia Bonnie Beam-Stratz, Community Outreach Coordinator, Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern WI Chapter Through experiential exercises participants feel what it might be like to have dementia. Reflections from persons with dementia are offered throughout the program. 2. Parkinson Disease: The Basics and Beyond Jeremy Otte, Director of Outreach & Education, Wisconsin Parkinson Association Learn the signs and symptoms of Parkinson disease, how it is diagnosed and the current treatment options. Discuss local programs and resources for people with Parkinson disease. 3. Therapeutic Benefits of Massage Maryann Dolson, Licensed Massage Therapist and Body Worker Learn about the therapeutic benefits of massage for those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. 4. Finding Healing When There is No Cure Kelly Dawson, NP & Darren Beachy, MTS, PACC, Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center Learn what palliative care is and how to improve quality of life through it’s use. 5. Dementia and Driving Steve Pazynski, Medical Review Supervisor, Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles Discuss basic myths about aging, driving and different age related changes. Learn how the DMV makes exceptions and what a family member/general public can do if someone shows signs of unsafe driving. Exercises for Everyone Fred Brown, Exercise and Activity Coordinator, Generation Exercise is crucial for everyone! It increases strength & flexibility, reduces joint pain, and combats fatigue. 1:15 Workshop B (select one from # 7-12) 7. Understanding & Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors Bonnie Beam-Stratz, Community Outreach Coordinator, Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern WI Chapter- Learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. 8. Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and Dementia Jody Krainer, Dementia Diagnostic Clinic Network Manager, WI Alzheimer’s Institute, UW-Madison An overview of diagnosing dementia, and identifying the additional challenges faced by those living with an intellectual developmental disability. Strategies will be suggested to overcome some of the challenges. 9. Compassion Fatigue and Caregiver Burnout Rachel M. Kummer, & John P. Martin, Medical Social Workers, Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Recognize the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and learn about healthy coping strategies to prevent caregiver burnout. 10. Substitute Decision Making Christine Freund, Adult Protective Services Specialist, Sheboygan County Health and Human Services; & Lee Mitchler, Medical Social Worker, Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Gain general information on advanced health care planning and guardianship. Learn the differences and discover which would be appropriate to pursue depending on the situation. 11. Dementia and Driving (repeat) Steve Pazynski, Medical Review Supervisor, Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles Discuss basic myths about aging, driving and different age related changes.
