Peers, friendsSouth’s Tutas, North’s Stengel elite pass-catchers

Jake Stengel rolled upin his black pickup truck, stuck his head out thewindow and hollered loud-ly, “Riiii-iley!”

RileyTutas,standingnearby,laughed.

Stengelgot out ofhis rideand thetwo ex-changedan enthu-siastichand-shake.

These sensational highschool wide receivers gottogether for a photo shootearlier this week, andthough they’re fierce ri-vals on the football field

(and basketball court),they’re anything but ad-versaries off it.

“He’s like a brother tome,” Tutas said of Stengelbefore the latter arrived.

Stengel is SheboyganNorth’s 6-4, 190-poundpass-catching machine.Tutas is SheboyganSouth’s 6-2, 200-pound big-play threat.

What a coincidence thattwo of the best wideouts incity history are playing onopposite ends of town atthis identical point in time.

Given all that’s at stake, one might think there’s awindow for animosity be-tween these dynamic ath-letes. After all, not onlyare they trying to helptheir respective teamsseize a precious playoffspot in a brutal league, they’re also competing for

individual conferencehonors, city braggingrights and maybe evencollege scholarships.

Refreshingly, though, these two young men em-body what a classy rivalryshould be, and they reflectthe type of relationshipssport at its best can nur-ture. They’re fast friends, literally and figuratively. They even went to morethan half-a-dozen collegecamps together this sum-mer.

When someone suggest-ed they go to the same col-lege, they both smiledwide.

Last year, their numberswere similar. Tutas had 24catches for 556 yards andeight touchdowns, averag-ing a jaw-dropping 23.2yards per catch. And Sten-gel had 26 catches for 514

yards and five scores, av-eraging 19.8 yards percatch. The North standoutwas second-team All-FoxRiver Classic Conference. The South standout washonorable mention.

In last year’s North-South game, Tutas hadthree catches for 113yards, including a 90-yardtouchdown down the rightsideline. Stengel had threecatches for 52 yards, butthe Golden Raiders wonthe game.

They’ll meet again onthe final Thursday of theregular season. They’llbattle hard and do every-thing they can to win andterrorize the opposing sec-ondary.

And then, when it’s over,no matter the outcome, they’ll share a hug.

They get it like that.

Newfound confidenceBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

Ed Thompson has seen a lot ofSheboygan North football gamesover the years.

A loyal assistant since 1998,Thompson served under threeGolden Raiders head coaches —Greg Enz, Dean Tutas and SteveBrickson — in 12 seasons.

During that time, Thompson sawit all, from a conference champi-onship (1999) to a winless season(2007) and everything in between.

Now it’s Thompson’s turn to runthe show. He’s the interim headcoach for this season, after whichathletic director Dan Stengel hassaid he will re-open the position. That doesn’t seem to botherThompson, who’s refreshinglyhumble and truly seems to be inthis coaching thing for the kids.

“I never had aspirations of beinga head coach,” he said. “The waythings happened (Steve Bricksonresigned after losing his teachingposition just before summer), weall wanted the least disruptivething. This made sense.”

Thompson said he has tremen-dous confidence in a strong groupof assistant coaches on a staff thatincludes newcomer Wade Rick-meier, who’s running special teamsand the offensive line. Rickmeierwas head coach at Valders for 13years, and guided the Vikings toeight straight playoff appearancesfrom 1999-2006.

The Raiders have eight returningstarters on offense and four on de-fense from last year’s 3-6 team, andThompson sounds optimistic.

“With the work these playershave put in, honestly, and I’m notjust saying this because I’m run-ning things now, I’ve never seen agroup of players work this hard,”Thompson said. “If they can riseup emotionally, if they have thatfire, enthusiasm and emotion ittakes, they will be in every game, and that’s all you can ask.”

One of North’s adopted slogansthis season is, “Champions dosomething extra.”

Another is, “1-and-0,” as in, try togo 1-0 every week rather than fo-cusing on long-term goals like the

playoffs.Thompson said players started

lifting hard around the Christmasbreak and never stopped. They’vedone speed and plyometric work(training for explosive movements)on the track, too.

“The weight-lifting attendancethis summer was the best we’vehad in 15 years,” Thompson said.“One day, we had more than 100kids.”

Leading North’s Wing-T offenseis three-year starting senior quar-terback Derek Van Calligan, afleet-footed, tough kid who in thepast two years has often been onthe run due to inconsistent block-ing in front of him.

Thompson said Van Calligan’spassing has improved dramaticallysince last year, and that’s particu-larly bad news for opponents, giventhat senior receiver Jake Stengelcould be a major-college recruit. At6-4 and 190 pounds, with greathands and good speed, Stengel is anightmare for secondaries.

Reed Konter and Kevan Riverabring experience to the runningback positions, which also includestop prospect Danny Weber, a com-

pact 5-7, 173-pound junior withgreat burst and power. Speedy NajiAllen will serve as a wingback/re-ceiver hybrid, going in motion reg-ularly and creating problems inspace.

Thompson said the offensive lineis improved, with players likeFletcher Bayens (255 pounds) andAndy LeBeau (280) providing sizeand experience.

Tight end Lucas McKnight willbe one of the few players startingboth ways (he’s also an outsidelinebacker) with LeBeau likely theother.

Defensively, the Raiders will shiftto a 3-3-5, or 3-5. Anchoring the lineis senior three-year varsity playerNick Gottowski, a 5-10, 265-pounder who Thompson said is“like a man up there,” and LeBeau, among others.

Linebacker, inside and outside,is a position of strength, with An-thony Caelwaerts and AndrewRoelse among the players on astrong unit that includes promis-ing youngsters like sophomoreAaron Rothwell.

Among the backs is Deon Mad-den, a senior who helped North’s1,600 relay get to State last spring.

Recipe for excitementBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

For the second time in eightyears, there will be no junior var-sity football team at SheboyganSouth, a Division 1 school withnearly 1,400 students.

Certainly, this is not an ideal sce-nario for sixth-year head coachChris Hein, but given the numbershe’s working with, he felt it wasthe only decision.

“We didn’t have a choice,” hesaid. “We didn’t think it was fairto the kids (to try to field a teamwith minimal sophomore num-bers).”

The good news is, South willhave a freshman team, and the 36players from that class are themost in a few years.

“We’ll continue to work with theyouth program and try to get bet-ter (at drawing players into theprogram), and get kids excitedabout playing football,” said Hein.“Football is such a great sport. Itbuilds so much character. We’vegot to get more kids involved, andwe’ll keep plugging away. I’ll letother people decide if (the lownumbers) reflects poorly upon ourprogram.”

Back in 2003, a similar numberscrunch led to the suspension ofthe JV team. The next year, Southwent 11-1 and stormed through theold Fox River Valley Conference,so not having a JV team in a givenyear is not necessarily devastat-ing. Yet Hein realizes his programis at a crossroads, especially giventhe brutality of the Fox River Clas-sic Conference Sheboygan’s twopublic schools now play in.

“When you look at the last threeyears, we’re obviously not headingin the right direction when youlook at our record,” said Hein, whose Redwings are 9-18 overalland 7-16 in FRCC play in thatstretch. “But we have to put it inperspective. We’re 8-7 against ourold conference teams and 1-11against the new conference teams. Our city is struggling to rise up tothe level of those teams. We’ve gotto pick it up a notch from wherewe were in the old FRVC.”

Recent struggles aside, Hein’svoice reflects genuine excitementabout this year’s team, which fea-tures tremendous experience andsome elite-level skill positionstandouts. Nine players who start-ed on defense and five who startedon offense return.

“I’m extremely confident that if westay healthy, we will be a very com-petitive team, and a team fans aregoing to like to watch,” Hein said.

Quarterback Ethan Berlin andreceiver Riley Tutas are the epito-me of athleticism. Berlin, quick-footed and accurate, is a true dualthreat, a running back with anarm and the perfect triggermanfor Hein’s spread “Wildcat” look.Berlin, who started four gameslast season, will execute every-thing from rollouts to read/mid-line options. He’ll operate primari-ly out of the shotgun. In Tutas,Berlin has a true gamebreaker athis disposal, an all-conferenceplayer who averaged a stunning23.2 yards per catch last season.

“We don’t have the personnel toline up and mash people, so we’lldo what suits us best,” Hein said ofhis offense. “Why try to win a fist-fight when you should be trying towin a track meet?”

Other promising athletes in-

clude baseball star JoshGruenke, a first-year footballplayer who has looked good at tail-back; receiver Thomas Murrayand tight end Brady Callahan. The offensive line is fairly sea-soned, with returnees Eric Mor-gan and James Lanser leadingthe way.

Defensively, Hein has returnedto the 4-3 look South embraced be-fore experimenting with 3-4 and 4-5 tweaks the last couple of years. All three starting linebackers re-turn, including three-year startingweakside ’backer Lanser and NickHartmann. Ashton Hoffmannand Abe Yang are among the keyreturnees up front, and Tutas is asafety. Borrowing a tradition fromNebraska, Hein is giving practice“blackshirts” to the top defensiveplayers.

“I think our mood is great rightnow,” he said. “We’ve talked a lotmore about the principles we be-lieve in and our goals than we everhave. The last two years haven’tbeen good. We’re all aware of that, but in the end, it doesn’t matter. This isn’t last year’s team, it’s thisyear’s team. I think we have agroup of kids who are confidentand really, really competitive, andthat’s very exciting to me.”

Reloading for a repeatBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

Replacing graduated standoutsfrom the previous year is a partof life for every high school foot-ball coach.

But at Plymouth, the void leftby the departure of multi-yearstarters Jon Criter, Ian Murrayand Ryan Schmitz is particularlytough to fill.

“Those three guys were reallythe foundation of our programthe last couple of years,” saidDan Knaus, who’s entering hisfourth season as head coach.“It’s like I’ve told some people, ifwe’re running a business, we’velost our CEOs. We still have a lotof blue-collar workers, but we’velost the management of the com-pany. We’ve got some key piecesback, but we’ve lost a big part ofour upper tier.”

In quarterback Criter, line-backer/fullback Murray andlineman Schmitz, the Pantherslost the Eastern Wisconsin Con-ference offensive MVP, its defen-sive MVP and its first-team all-league center, respectively. Mur-ray and Schmitz played in theWisconsin Football Coaches As-sociation All-Star Game.

Talk about your triple crown ofgraduation hits.

But while Knaus doesn’t sugar-coat the loss of those great play-ers and tremendous team lead-ers, he also pushes his programforward, determined not to let itbackslide after last season’s un-defeated run through the EWCand 9-2 season.

“As a head coach, my goal isthat we’re playing at the levelwhere we are competing for aconference title every year,”Knaus said. “That means wehave targets on our backs, butHomestead and Arrowhead havetargets, too. If you get kids outlike we have, when you have theluxury of having good competi-tion at all positions and greatpractices, you never want to sell

yourselves short.”Indeed, there are 101 players in

Plymouth’s healthy program. One of those is tailback HaydenPotts, a three-year starter who’sbig enough (190 pounds), fastenough and tough enough tohave a truly memorable season.

Last year, Potts rushed for1,202 yards and 13 touchdowns, and Knaus said he’s bigger andstronger than he was as a junior.

“He will definitely be our cen-terpiece athlete, but all greatplayers are surrounded by quali-ty teammates who help makethem great players,” Knaus said.“We’re only as good as the weak-est man on the ship. (Potts) hasthe ability and work ethic to be aspecial player, but we don’t wantto be one-dimensional.”

Replacing Criter at quarter-back is stocky and tough MitchUnger, who at 6-0 and 190pounds loves to run through con-tact. When Plymouth operatesout of its shotgun, which it willabout 40 percent of the time,Unger will do much more run-ning than Criter (who was an ex-

cellent passer) did. Think Flori-da and Tim Tebow.

“Unger is going to play a bigrole,” Knaus said of last year’sall-conference receiver. “I seehim as an 800-800 guy, with 800passing yards and 800 on theground.”

For Potts and Unger to runwild, the blocking will have to besolid. Fullbacks Brock Re-ichardt and Geno Kiela willstep in for Murray and returningstarting linemen Austin Meyerand Brad Hanson and tight endAlex Grahn lead the way upfront. Ricardo Lee steps in atcenter for Schmitz, and his job isimportant because he not onlyhas to long snap cleanly, he hasto lead the run game through themiddle.

In all, Plymouth returns fiveplayers with starting experienceon offense and four on defense. All three down linemen and allthree inside linebackers in Ply-mouth’s 3-5 must be replaced.Sawyer Bruggink, thestrongest player on the team, will play a key role at linebacker.

Plymouth will look to win back-to-back Eastern Wisconsin Conference titles forthe first time since 2003-04. Photo by Bruce Halmo/The Sheboygan Press

Looking to ‘flex’ muscleBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

Michael Nikson enters his fourthseason as Sheboygan Falls’ headfootball coach with a 13-14 overallrecord and no playoff appearances.

At many communities, a footballprogram that hovers around .500each year and plays hard wouldn’tbe cause for hand-wringing. But atFalls, where the Falcons never hada losing season in 26 years underDan Juedes and made annual treksto the postseason, some fans arerestless. Tradition can be a double-edged sword, after all.

To his credit, Nikson soldiers onin upbeat fashion, working to helphis players succeed — on and offthe field. Yes, he wants to win. Buthe says that’s not his primary rea-son for coaching. And the positivetone of his voice indicates an un-shakable optimism.

“You have to focus on the impor-tant things,” said Nikson, who isone of the nice guys in the coach-ing fraternity. “If you’re doing ath-letics just for winning, you’re miss-ing the big picture. We’re trying toget kids to participate, to becomegreat citizens, great human beingsand contribute to something biggerthan themselves. The kids in thisprogram are getting it. The kidsmake it worth it. If I was coachingfor adults, I wouldn’t be there. Tosee the kids develop is great. And ofcourse, we’re still trying our best tobe competitive on the field.”

This year, the Falcons are goingto a new offense, scrapping theshotgun spread and zone blockingthat just didn’t click consistentlyover the past few years.

Falls will now run out of the dou-ble-wing “flexbone,” which collegefootball fans will recognize ifthey’ve watched Air Force play onTV. Sheboygan North rode thescheme to a conference title in 1999under former coach Greg Enz. It’san option-based attack featuring afullback and two wingbacks.

“We’re going to try to use ourathleticism to the best of our abili-ty,” said Nikson, who has not beenblessed with overall size on the line

since he took over at Falls. “We’resmall, but we have a bunch of trackkids. We’re going to try to get themrunning downhill.”

Four starters return on offense, including linemen TrevorBerceau and Sean Mueller. Re-turning wingbacks/running backsNick Roelse and Andy Ansaybring great athleticism to that posi-tion. Alex Grabowski, a trackstandout in the spring, is anotherathletic option on offense.

Quarterback Jason Fenner isanother athletic piece of whatNikson hopes will be a quick-strikeoffense.

“I think our backfield should bereally good,” he said. “All track ath-letes. Nick Roelse second-team all-conference on both sides of theball. Ansay is a great sprinter, andGrabowski is great in the 400.(Wingback) Matt Hasler is a three-sport athlete. These guys could allbe difference-makers. If we can getthem a seam, it should be fun towatch.”

Defensively, Falls will play a 3-4and will send linebackers from var-ious angles to try to be disruptive.

“Oh, gosh yeah, we’re looking tobring pressure every play,” Niksonsaid.

Roelse and Cole Heili return atlinebacker and Hasler, Ansay, Fen-ner and Grabowski patrol the sec-ondary. Berceau and Mueller leadthe way up front.

Due to unusually small juniorand sophomore classes, Niksonsaid the Falcons’ JV team will playon Monday nights so that thoseyoungsters who play on Fridayswill get more of a break.

“The good thing is we’ve got 35 or36 freshmen, a real nice class com-ing up,” Nikson said.

Back to the present, the Falconswill hope to parlay their athleti-cism into that elusive playoffberth.

“That’s a goal we always have,”Nikson said of the postseason.“But we just have to play withinourselves and take it week byweek. We will do the best we canfor the kids we have and do ourbest to put them in a winning situa-tion. My focus is on giving thesekids the best experience they canhave playing high school football.”

One more win. That’s all the Kiel football

team was looking for last year. One more win meant the Raiderswould have made the WIAA Divi-sion 4 playoffs.

A rough three-game slide inthe middle of the season left Kielplaying from behind in the latterpart of the season, and despitewinning three of its last four,Kiel sat at home when the play-offs started.

This year, the Kiel players aredetermined to be the firstRaiders team since 2006 to stillbe playing in late October.

Second-year coach Chris Ben-nin said what will tip the scalesin favor of the Raiders will bethe team’s overall health.

“That’s the most importantthing for us, especially on the of-fensive line,” said Bennin.“We’re trying to stress that rightnow, staying healthy in ourcamps and throughout the sea-son.”

The injury bug bit the Raidershard last season — on the lineand at quarterback. Those in-juries left Kiel scrambling mid-way through the season to getthe pieces back in place to makea playoff push.

After missing the playoffs, however, the Kiel coaching staffhas placed a greater emphasis onthe weight room with the Raiderplayers as a means of avoidingthose injuries.

“We stayed in the weight roommore this offseason, not so muchfor the strength but for the dura-bility,” Bennin said. “A lot of ourkey guys, especially on the line, went down last year. Our quar-terback went down last year, andthat set us back tremendously.

“It is our goal to have thesekids play all season long. That’swhen we can really reap the ben-efits of what we’ve done in theoffseason.”

If the offensive line can stayhealthy, Bennin feels that unit

can be the strong point for theRaiders this season. Kiel is rely-ing on three possible all-confer-ence candidates in senior centerNate Sell, senior tackle KylePreissner and junior tackleDustin Salm that Bennin isbuilding around.

“We have high expectations inour O-line,” Bennin said. “One ofour top goals is to solidify thatline. We need a couple kids tostep up on the line. That will de-termine how well we will do thisseason.”

Sell agrees.“We have a pretty good offen-

sive line put together,” Sell said.“We have a lot of depth. We’rehitting pretty good. We’ll be apretty aggressive offensive linethis year.”

That offensive line will be try-ing to protect junior quarterbackGeddy Nordby and open holes

for senior fullback DerekFritsch.

Defensively, Bennin has spenttime with the team this offsea-son working on making theRaiders a faster unit after seeingthe team struggle to get to theball at times last season.

That added agility has made theRaiders a faster team. Add that tobetter health along the line and ahunger from missing the playoffslast year, and Kiel looks to be adangerous team in the EasternWisconsin Conference.

“We were hoping to make theplayoffs last year,” senior widereceiver Isaiah Herzog said.“By just missing it by one game, maybe there will be that push towant to get there this year. It’skind of a little bit of a chip onour shoulder.”

Time to be greatBY MICHAEL ROGERSGannett Wisconsin Media

The 2009 season was anothergood one for the New HolsteinHigh School football team. Notgreat, certainly not bad, butgood.

It’s become almost customaryfor the Huskies to challenge forthat top spot in the Eastern Wis-consin Conference, only to fallshort.

New Holstein went 6-3 duringthe regular season and poundedMayville 40-0 in the first round ofthe playoffs — clinching a thirdstraight seven-win season — be-fore bowing out to eventual statechampion Big Foot 21-7 in thesecond round.

So close to upsetting the bestteam in the state, but again, justanother good performance.

“We still lost,” senior Jake En-tringer said.

“I went down to Madison towatch them play and they killedKewaunee. It’s frustrating be-cause we know as well as any-body we could have been there. Itwas a momentum booster (com-ing into this season) becausethey were state champs, but wehave to bring that every week.”

What could make the differ-ence this time around? Well, theHuskies have something great.

The Huskies’ backfield con-tains two three-year starters whoare considered among the best inthe state at their position by wis-sports.net.

Cody Thede (6-1, 235), a well-built, bruising fullback, ran for687 yards, and Entringer (5-10,200) earned first-team all-confer-ence honors for a second consec-utive season by running for 776yards.

Both ran for 10 touchdownsand both are back to make thingsdifficult for opposing defensivecoordinators.

“They’re both big and strong,”New Holstein’s co-coach GregFictum said. “They’re very ac-tive in the weight room, andtheir strength is their strength.

Thede’s got some good explosion.Jake runs the (heck) out of theball. He probably won’t be a sur-prise to anybody.”

The lone skill position thatcould present a problem is atquarterback. Chris Lefeberstarted as a junior and senior be-fore graduating and leaving theposition to senior Cade Lefeberand junior Sam Cash.

They’re lucky enough to havereliable targets in tight endBrett Boettcher (6-6, 200),whose 345 yards were the fourth-most in the league last season, and wide receiver Tyler Zipper-er, who Fictum says has greathands.

But how good the skill positionplayers are will come down, asusual, to the offensive line. Lastseason, New Holstein replacedall five starters, and the replace-ments did a credible job. Thisseason, the Huskies will havethree new starters.

Travis Steffen (5-10, 250) start-ed most of his junior season andwill be a captain. Junior ChrisGreuel (6-0, 190) and seniorAaron Sherry (6-2, 270) both

started parts of last season andare expected to start this season.

“There’s a lot of high expecta-tions,” Thede said. “We’re goingto run hard and hit our holes, but we’ll go as far as the linetakes us.”

It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that the line is the biggest un-known on defense.

Steffen will anchor that group, while defensive coach ChuckLefeber said Greg Parker (6-1,275) would likely play a big part, but he still needed two otherplayers.

There is experience in the line-backing corps, the strength ofthe team, led by Thede.

“Thede’s going to be leadingthe pack,” Entringer said. “Heshould have a breakout season. He’s got a nose for the ball.”

After being second-team all-conference last season, Zippererleads the secondary, which coach-es and players expect to be solid.

“We have all the talent in theworld,” Thede said. “We justhave to put it together.”

Statistically speaking, HowardsGrove had an impressive 2009 sea-son, with a 1,000-yard feature back(Collin Horness), a 1,000-yard pass-er (Eric Dickmyer) and a receiverwith 50 catches and more than 800yards (Mike Verfuerth).

Unfortunately for the Tigers, those big-time individual numbersdidn’t quite translate into the kindof team success head coach DaveSchmid was hoping for. Yes, therewere flashes of greatness, but theend result was a 4-6 final record —the Tigers’ first losing season sinceSchmid’s first year (2002).

Those three talented playersgraduated, and Schmid said the2010 edition of the Tigers is lackingthat kind of overall star power. He’shoping this team can overcomethat, band together and reach alevel of overall chemistry lastyear’s talented team just didn’tquite find.

“I think we’re going to have apretty unified team this year,” saidSchmid, now in his ninth year atHowards. “I don’t know that I haveany superstars, but when you havesuperstars, it tends to divide a teama little bit. We have a lot of goodkids, average kids who are hardworkers and on the same page, andthey treat each other that way. There’s a closeness.”

Howards, which returns fiveplayers with starting experience, has just eight seniors on the rosterand only about four of them willplay regularly. That means lots ofpromising young players battledfor spots during camp. Three soph-omores will play a lot, and the jun-ior class is strong.

Schmid said Howards’ teamspeed will be above average, andsenior receiver/defensive end MattWleklinski could be the fastestplayer in the area. He’ll be an en-ticing target for new starting quar-terback Noah Steines (who led theJV team last year).

Another intriguing athlete in thePro-I offense is junior AshtonHolzman, a former lineman whohas been moved to tight end. At 6-5,

230 pounds, Holzman has a collegetight end body and good enoughhands from playing first base in thesummer that he could be a majorweapon in the pass game.

One luxury Schmid has enjoyedthe past several years has beenworkhorse feature backs, from El-liot Thieleke to Horness. The coachis still sorting out the candidates atrunning back. Max Cohen will geta long look and another candidateis fulltime soccer player DustonRabe, a good athlete who offered toexpand his role beyond kicker. Full-back Brevin Scholten shows goodpotential for a sophomore.

“We’re going to start the seasonreally wanting and trying to runthe ball,” Schmid said. “Leads, toss, like we’ve done, and we’ll probablydo more option than we have thepast couple of years. Dickmyer wasa good athlete; I just don’t think Iworked the option enough last year.Steines is a pretty good athlete, and

when you’re inexperienced on theoffensive line, the option can be agood equalizer.”

There’s some size up front, butdepth is a concern, as eight to 10players will start both ways, andjust 14 players will share a largepercentage of the snaps.

Defensively, Howards will run a5-3. Holzman and Wleklinskishould be tough up front, andSchmid said the defense was aheadof the offense going into tonight’sopener.

Schmid said even given theteam’s inexperience, finishing bet-ter than .500 in conference play andmaking the postseason is a realisticgoal. Considering the youth on thisvarsity roster and additionalstrong sophomores on the JV team,2011 could be special.

But Schmid plans to enjoy thepersonality of this team.

“They work extremely hard,” hesaid. “And they’re very, very self-less.”

Five plays.That’s how many Oostburg

starts a season with in its baseseries, expanding from there butonly after the Flying Dutchmencan run those core full-houseWing-T staples to the satisfactionof fifth-year head coach ScottRing.

“The players laugh at me, be-cause they know exactly whatplays we’re running the first dayof camp,” said Ring, 29, a youngman but an old soul when itcomes to football philosophy.

“If you want to win, you haveto run the ball. Yes, the kids stilllike it when I tweak the forma-tions a little bit, put in a fewextra things. They’re kids. Butwe basically go off a five-play se-ries and branch out from there. Idon’t like to move on to differentthings until we’re doing our few(base) plays perfectly. And like Itell them, we’re never going to beperfect.”

Perfect? No. Efficient? Yes.Successful? Absolutely.

Ring has molded the FlyingDutchmen in his image, and he’sgot the program humming. Oost-burg went 9-2 last season and is16-4 in Central Lakeshore Con-ference play over the past threeyears.

The Dutch lost some greatplayers to graduation last year, including the Menzel brothers(Luke and Jake, who combinedfor more than 2,000 yards rush-ing) and two-way lineman SamVan Tatenhove (who was abeast at 290-plus pounds).

But the Dutch return fivestarters on each side of the ball, and Ring said the offseason workethic and overall attitude of thisyear’s team makes him smile. Hethinks this is his fastest team —especially on defense.

Ring will have seven or eighttwo-way starters. While somecoaches strive to two-platoon as

much as possible, Ring believesin using his best players thewhole game. He proudly calls it“Ironman Football.”

That said, he’s thrilled withthe depth on the line. He’s three-deep at tackle and loved the com-petition during preseason camp.Three solid starters up front re-turn in Brant Wilterdink,Zach Brill and Ray Wittneben.

Given Ring’s run-first ap-proach, great backs are impor-tant, and though it will be diffi-cult to replace Luke Menzel andhis 1,500 yards and 27 touch-downs, Oostburg has a willing, eager and talented candidate insenior Dustin Veldboom.

“He has a lot of ambition, andhe worked his tail off this sum-mer, like a lot of our guys did,”Ring said. “He wants to be thatguy. He wants to carry thatweight on his shoulders.”

The new starting quarterbackis Mike Keller, an athletic 6-4,175-pound senior basketball

standout who’s gained about 20pounds of muscle.

“He has been really impres-sive,” Ring said. “He has workedon his size and speed, and gottena lot faster. He’s a good rolloutpasser and we plan to use himlike a fourth running back.”

Keller and speedy runningback/cornerback Alex Steckerlead a strong secondary, withVeldboom and Sam Schoutenkeying the linebackers. Thosefour players are the fastest onthe team.

“Things just feel comfortablehere right now,” Ring said of hisprogram. “It feels like everyoneis on the same page, that we’reall following the same gameplan. The kids are further alongas far as what they know thanany other year since I’ve beenhere. I love the chemistry, the ca-maraderie on this team.Whether we win or lose, I just re-ally like this group. I’m excitedto be with them every day. It’s apleasure coaching them.”

Last season, Oostburg went 0-2 against Cedar Grove-Belgium and 9-0 againsteveryone else. Photo by Gary C. Klein/The Sheboygan Press

Reloading challengeBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

If ever there was a year CedarGrove-Belgium’s surging footballprogram might hiccup, sputter orat least skip a tiny beat, this wouldappear to be it.

After all, the Rockets graduatednine starters on each side of theball, including several multi-yearstandouts who brought not only tal-ent, but great leadership to thepractice field every day — not tomention steely intensity every Fri-day night.

But this thriving Rockets pro-gram doesn’t flame out, it refuels,so if you’re looking for a one-yearhiatus from its dominant ways, youmight be disappointed.

“All good things do come to anend, but hopefully not any timesoon for us,” said Cedar Grovehead coach Chris Zablocki, whohas an all-time high of 60 boys inhis program. “These players wantto be just as successful as the previ-ous teams here have been. Theytake a lot of pride in wearing‘Rockets’ on their chest.”

Gone are multi-year starting line-men Wayne Paulus, Aaron Bley,Tyler Weavers and Nate Drewry, not to mention leather-tough line-backer/running back stalwarts NicVrubley and Spencer Jacque, among many others. Athletic two-way senior starter Tyler Garcia (areceiver and defensive back) decid-ed to focus on wrestling this yearand is not playing. Add to that thefact that there have been a coupleof injuries in practice this year, and the deck seems a bit stackedagainst the Rockets.

But while Zablocki acknowledgesthere will be a slew of varsity new-comers on the field tonight againststate power Ripon, he concedesnothing, and praises his young-sters for their work ethic, desireand physical talent. He said theRockets’ JV program won confer-ence last year, and as eighth-graders, they finished second inthe ultra-competitive AmericanYouth Football League (which in-cludes state high school power-

houses like Mequon Homestead).“It’s going to be up to the kids,”

Zablocki said of how good thisteam, which has only six seniors, can be. “The talent is there, that’snot even in question. They haveworked hard in the weight room. The strength, quickness, mobility, all of those things are there. We didlose great leadership, and I won-dered about that, but that questionhas been answered. Players havestepped up and become leadersafter learning from the players ofthe past. It will all come down toworking together as a team.”

No area program has been aspowerful as Cedar Grove over thepast several seasons. Since 2004, theRockets are 35-5 in the CentralLakeshore Conference. The lasttwo seasons, Cedar Grove took it toanother level, going 24-2 overalland 14-0 in CLC play with an ap-pearance at State in 2008 and astate quarterfinal appearance lastfall.

Returning starter Chris Peszko,a 6-0, 223-pound junior, will playboth tight end and defensive end.

Offensive left tackle Andy Van Essreturns as does junior defensiveback Nick Peterson. After that, there are some players who startedsporadically, but most positions fea-tured spirited competition betweenthe newcomers.

Piloting the Rockets’ Pro-I will betwo-year starting JV quarterbackT.J. Obbink. A great run game isalways important to Zablocki, andsome talented prospects such asHunter Buechler and Alex Gileshave shown things in practice.

Cedar Grove’s 4-4 defense hasbeen the cornerstone to its success, and Zablocki likes what he sees inthat unit. Darren Koopman start-ed some last year and will be partof what should be an outstandinglinebacker corps. Junior JakeWeyker has some experience at de-fensive end.

“We had moments in practicewhen we didn’t see (the requiredintensity) and that’s my job to fixthat,” Zablocki said. “But lately, thedefense has been very intense. Allof the players on this team havewaited their turn. They’re hungry.”

Spirited dedicationBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

It’s easy to become jaded bybig-business football, whetherit’s millionaire NFL slacker Al-bert Haynesworth in Washing-ton or USC’s shady behavior onthe college scene.

But there are plenty of placeswhere the game is still playedpurely out of love, places likeElkhart Lake-Glenbeulah.

The Resorters haven’t had anoverall winning record since1998. Year after year, the tiny-school program hangs by athread, seemingly a handful ofinjuries or quitters away fromforfeiture. In 2006, the schoolcould not field a team due to lownumbers.

Once again this season,Elkhart is thread-bare when itcomes to depth. There are 22players in the program, includ-ing four freshmen, eight sopho-mores and just one senior (NickPritzl). There will be no JVgames, though sixth-year headcoach Barry Feldmann is work-ing on arranging some JV-typescrimmages for the youngerplayers to cut their teeth in.

There’s currently a push forhigh school soccer in the com-munity, another potentially diffi-cult development for the footballprogram.

All that said, as usual, Feld-mann loves the collection ofgritty players who are keepinghis program alive.

“The kids who are here are theones who have the passion forthe game, the ones who want toplay,” said Feldmann. “I alreadytold the freshmen that they’llhave to play special teams and ifwe need to, we’ll throw them inthe mix (for regular playingtime). We just have to do it, likewe do every year. We just have tokeep pounding away. Right now, these players have a great men-tal attitude. They’re playinghard, not giving up.”

Feldmann said he expects 11players to start both ways, acommon practice at Elkhart.

One of those two-way startersis talented 5-10, 190-pound juniorquarterback/linebacker KyleRentmeester, who was impres-sive last season and has takenhis game to a higher level.

“He’s the commander of ouroffense and the captain of ourdefense,” said Feldmann. “Helets people know what they needto do, where they need to go.He’s a very good leader. He’s aplayer any coach would love tohave.”

Three starters return for theResorters’ spread offense. In ad-dition to Rentmeester, they arelone offensive line returneeAlex Miller and split end JoshSchneider.

Feldmann said he has been im-pressed with the tenacity of hisoffensive line, a unit he says is“very tough.” He converted acouple of former fullbacks whogrew over the offseason, and theresult has been an athletic groupthat can get off the line quicklyat the snap, pull and move wellin space.

The strength of the Resorters’3-5 defense could be the lineback-

ers, a tough athletic group thatwill be as disruptive as possible.

Football is a numbers game, soto expect these Resorters to wina Central Lakeshore Conferencetitle given the makeup of theirroster and the youth might beasking too much. Feldmann saidhe wants his team to be competi-tive and hopes a middle-of-the-pack finish is in the cards.

“For how young we are, with-out a senior on the offensiveline, we’re learning, taking babysteps,” he said. “I like what I’mseeing.”

As for the future of the pro-gram, Feldmann said he’s therefor the players who love thegame and yearn to play it on Fri-day nights.

“I have the passion,” he said.“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’thave that passion. But is it get-ting harder? Yeah, it is. Ourschool enrollment is goingdown, too. But we do have prom-ising middle school numbersright now, and I’m excited aboutthat.”

Where there’s love, there’s al-ways hope.

A mix of old and newBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

With 12 seniors, Random Lakeis a relatively mature team.

With a freshman and twosophomores starting on the all-important offensive line, Ran-dom Lake is a pretty youngteam, too.

How that experience andyouth blend together will go along way toward determininghow this season turns out forthe Rams.

“It’s a pretty big senior class, but we’ve got a lot of positionsto fill,” said longtime coachChris Bichler. “This year goingin, I was kind of leery of whatwe were going to have, but thekids came out and really showedme something with their workethic and attitude. The seniorshave re-energized me, and I’mexcited.”

Bichler, the Rams’ head coachfrom 1993-1998 and then againfrom 2004 to now, has never hesi-tated to start the best players re-gardless of age during his twosix-year head coaching stints.

“They’ve got to be physicallyready for it, and if we startthem young, we think they are,”Bichler said. “Mentally as well,of course, and I think (the un-derclassmen starting this year)are. I like it too, because you getthem for more than one year, which makes it easier to buildconsistency. But it still comesdown to playing the best play-ers, the ones who are executingthe best. We’re going to startthem.”

Bichler is excited about thepotential of freshman offensivelineman Reed Anklam, a 6-1,250-pounder who brings greatphysicality to the equation, es-pecially given his youth. Sopho-mores Mitch Jentges andWilly Rosso are also slated tostart on the offensive line.

“It still all starts up front,”Bichler said. “We’ve got somepretty good skill players at therunning back spots, but still

have to open holes, block. Theoffensive line is so important, and how quickly ours jells andlearns the scheme will be a bigindicator of how we do. I reallylike that the kids have come towork hard.”

Dual threat quarterbackMason Anklam graduated. Se-nior Max Laumann will starttonight, with sophomore BradySchmidt a possible option forplaying time as the season pro-gresses. With Laumann at quar-terback, it does take him out ofa defensive end spot he wassolid at for two seasons.

Bichler, more than most small-school coaches, believes strong-ly in the two-platoon system. Hegoes into every season hopingfor 22 starters, though he real-izes that’s not realistic mostyears. This season, four or fiveplayers will start both ways, in-cluding running back/line-backer Brett Weiand; Lau-mann at defensive end and tightend when he’s not at quarter-

back; safety/receiver Dan Pohl;two-way lineman Brady Ehlenand Jake Schwan or Ben Bahrat linebacker and fullback.

“I’m not going to change myphilosophy (about two-platoon-ing),” Bichler said. “Players(who two-platoon) get to focuson their one position. I under-stand and respect coaches whobelieve in playing lots of two-way starters, but I’m just notone of them. In practice, I liketo have my No. 1 offense go upagainst my No. 1 defense.”

Bichler’s teams usually have astrong run game. Last year,Weiand and Justin Lunde gotvaluable experience and bothwill get plenty of chances toemerge early as the primaryball-carrier.

Random Lake returns aboutsix players on offense and de-fense with starting experience. There are three starters on theoffensive line, which will helpease the transition for theyoungsters who will join them.

Going old schoolBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

New coach, no quarterback. Those are the two most intrigu-

ing storylines for this year’sOzaukee football team.

First-year head coach JimLippe is coming back to his almamater, and he has put a uniquestamp on the program right awayby employing the old-schoolPrinceton single wing offense.

“Yes, we’re going to play with-out a quarterback,” Lippe saidwith a chuckle. “I hate to use theword ‘gimmicky.’ … we’re justgoing to be a little old-fashionedin our scheming. It can be reallyexciting and tough to defend.”

The offense, run nationwidesix, seven decades ago, does notemploy a quarterback. Instead, three backs line up behind centerand all can receive direct shotgunsnaps. Whoever takes a snap canrun or pass. In addition, there’s awingback in motion who can alsotake a snap and even run tight“Jet” series reverses.

A team in Menominee, Mich.,coached by state legend KenHofer, has dominated with thesingle wing for decades.

“It’s a good offense when youdon’t have the big powerhousetackles and guards,” Lippe said.“My offensive coordinator, RickHughes; he and I will always tryto come up with schemes thatmeet our personnel.”

Hughes, who coached Ozaukeein the early 1990s, has run a ver-sion of the single wing in a localyouth league with great success.Lippe, who played offensiveguard on scholarship at WesternMichigan after graduating fromOzaukee in 1982, served as a de-fensive coordinator in that sameyouth league last fall and enjoyedcoaching. He takes over at Ozau-kee for Lee Baldwin, who went35-47 in nine years.

Lippe will strive to bring amulti-layered approach to the po-sition. He said he plans to be in-volved from the grassroots levelon up, making sure the youth

league’s 5th-graders are connect-ed to the varsity program andthat the entire community ralliesaround Warriors football.

Back to the single wing, theWarriors will use an unbalancedline with a fullback, a halfbackand a blocking back. There is nofeature back per se, because thethree parts are interchangeable, but Lippe loves the big-play po-tential of senior Jason Gen-srick, and has also been im-pressed with Devon Linemeyer, among others.

There are no wide receivers, but the two base tight ends canflank out wide.

“The way we sold this offenseto the kids was, we do spread itout, and really put the pressureon the defense,” Lippe said. “Ifthey take one thing away fromus, we like to think we can hurtthem with something else.”

Center Nick Berlick is a key tothis offense, because he’ll besnapping the ball to differentplaces and will need to knowwhat he’s doing. Lippe is thrilled

with how Berlick has handledthe assignment.

Defensively, Lippe will run afive-man front with two or threelinebackers. He said in a run-firstconference like the CentralLakeshore, he will sell out to stopthe run and make teams try tobeat the Warriors through the air.

There are 47 players in the pro-gram — a solid number. Butmany of the varsity players thisyear are young, and Lippe does-n’t feel he has enough depth yetto go the two-platoon route —something he said he badlywants to do in the future.

Two sophomores will start onvarsity, as will freshman offen-sive guard Cody Stageman, a 5-10, 210-pounder who the formercollege OG Lippe likes a lot.

Lippe expects to get a real ideaof where his team is on Saturday.

“I don’t have a good baselineread right now,” he said. “I haveso many questions. Our teamgoal is to make the playoffs thisyear. I think that’s important toour program.”

Continued improvementBY PETE BARTHSheboygan Press staff

Nobody said building a highschool football program fromscratch was easy.

Oh sure, things looked promis-ing enough back in 2003, whenthe Sheboygan Lutheran varsitysquad went 3-6 in its first year ofexistence, then followed that de-cent debut with a 4-5 second sea-son.

But perhaps the buzz of new-ness wore off, because the Cru-saders went 2-7 in 2005 and then, hampered by lack of participa-tion and depth problems, suf-fered through three straight sea-sons without a CentralLakeshore Conference victory.

Now, though, it seems thatthird-year head coach Matt Zava-da has pulled the Crusaders outof their nosedive and the pro-gram is ascending.

“I’ve been telling our kids, ourgoal this year is to make theplayoffs,” said Zavada. “As acoach, I can now legitimately saythat. The seniors really want it,and we will be upset if we don’tget it. It’s our No. 1 goal. Thatsaid, we will definitely take itone week at a time. But weshould have a winning seasonthis year.”

Things look good on paper forthe Crusaders, who return ninestarters on offense and 10 on de-fense, have enough players tocompletely separate the varsityand JV teams (last year, severalplayers had to double-dip), andhave 70 kids between 5th and 8thgrades in the Sheboygan YouthFootball league.

Now a co-op program, Luther-an/Kohler/Sheboygan Christianfeatures a diverse mix of playersfrom each of the three schools.

In terms of scheme, the Cru-saders run a ground-based I-for-mation attack. Just a few yearsago, the Crusaders weren’t bigenough or physical enough — es-pecially up front — to do that, sothey threw, threw and threw

some more with only sporadicsuccess.

This year’s team will feature athunder-and-lightning runningback duo, with big fullback ZachWebster (240 pounds) serving asthe former and cat-quick AlanRodriguez acting as the latter. They’ll line up in straight “I” ora split-back look. Last season, inthe Crusaders’ win over Stock-bridge, Webster carried 42 timesfor 149 yards and three touch-downs. He’s gained 15 poundssince then. And the speedy Ro-driguez, who Zavada calls thepound-for-pound toughest playeron the team, had 686 yards rush-ing last fall. When Zavada reallywants his offense to get physical,he’ll bring in a second fullback, talented Michael Krueger (210pounds), and run a power-I.

Four starting linemen return, and Zavada likes their size andattitude. Quarterback JacobKanz is a three-year starter.

On defense, Krueger, just a jun-ior, is getting college attention,Zavada said, because he runs a4.8 40. At 210, he’s not big for a

defensive tackle, but he’s so dis-ruptive, the Crusaders like himthere. Connor Duchow is one ofthree team captains and solid atdefensive end and Jon Stinsonis a three-year starter at safety.

“We had our scrimmage lastSaturday, and it’s the best I’veseen our defense play in mythree years here,” Zavada said.“We were flying to the football, making plays.”

Nine players will start bothways, but Zavada said there’senough depth now to rotate subsin.

This was a strong offseason forthe Crusaders, who, Zavada said, had about 90 percent participa-tion in the weight room.

Two years ago, when he tookover as head coach of the Cru-saders, Zavada said he saw some-thing special in a hungry groupof sophomores. Now, he expectsbig things from his 12 seniors.

“We might have somethingspecial going this year,” he said.“I know we’re overlooked. Butwe don’t mind that. We’re rightwhere we want to be.”

Last year, the Crusaders had their best season since 2004. Photo by Gary C.Klein/The Sheboygan Press
