Shout Out from CTEC Gina Bader, School Counselor

On June 1st, six CTEC students presented their final Project Lead the Way (PLTW) engineering project to their teachers, family, and friends. These dedicated students are the first class to complete all four honors levels of PLTW which includes Intro to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, and Engineering Design & Development (EDD)! The premise of EDD is for students to identify and select a problem to work on for the entire semester. Once selected, they research it with patent searches and what is available on the market today. Students then conduct a survey to identify that their problem is a problem for others. Once approved by the instructor, students begin with brainstorming, decision matrix, sketching and prototyping of their ideas to attempt to fix the identified problem. Students work in teams to complete the design process of fixing their problem. ABSS gave the team a budget to spend on materials needed to complete the project. Students do lots of testing and more prototypes with Inventor (a CAD program) and the 3D printer (MakerBot) to see their idea come to life. All information is entered into a Innovational Portal for electronic storage.

Team Ice Scraper consisted of Nick Kuczkowski (Southern Alamance), Samantha Luu (Western Alamance), and Matt Wells (Western Alamance). They redesigned the ice scraper to cover more surface and be more functional. Team Toaster was Garner Fleming (Eastern Alamance), Austin Hurdle (Western Alamance), and Nathan Langley (Western Alamance). They worked to improve the mechanics of a toaster so the toast would pop up higher and not get stuck in the toaster. Both teams did an excellent job. Deryl Smith, their PLTW for three of the four courses, was able to present them with their PLTW stoles to recognize their commitment to this program. We are very proud of this group of students!

Elon Elementary's Second Grade invited the State Employee Credit Union Fat Cat to teach us on how to save money, understanding supply and demand, bartering, checking and interest. Shout Out from Woodlawn Middle Crystal Taylor, School Counselor

We celebrated our 8th grade student awards on Tuesday, June 7th. We had a total of almost 200 students that participated this year. Our students received several academic acknowledgements, in Science, Math, Social Studies, Language Arts and their elective classes.

One big recognition was a total of 60 students during their three year career academically made the A/B honor roll each year and three students made all A's honor roll in Middle School . This was not a easy quest to accomplish with several of them participating in 2 or more sports, as well as, the musicals and band productions at school and other extracurricular activities outside of school. Several students received honors and superlative recognition for their participation

in Drama, Chorus, and band during their middle School years. Woodlawn Middle school is the only middle school that puts on an annual full scale musical production.

All teachers spoke highly of this particular group of students’ academic gifts and talents were stellar. Many bragged about seeing future leaders that will be instrumental and productive adults one day!

Shout Out from Williams High Dee Sizemore, Math Department

Shout out to Patti Askew who is retiring from Williams HS this month after teaching for 36 years, 35 of them at Williams HS and 30 of those in the same classroom, Room 204! Over those years, Patti has taught Algebra I, Algebra 1A, Algebra 1B, Geometry, Math II, Algebra 2, Advanced Functions and Modeling, and Pre-Calculus. She has had many duties, advised clubs, been department chair, and served under 10 different principals at Williams HS! Patti attended Sellars-Gunn as a 9th grader, graduated from Williams in 1976, and then from UNC Chapel Hill in 1981. She taught in Georgia for her first year out of college and started teaching at Williams in 1981. So altogether, she has spent 38 years at this school! As far as we can tell, no other teacher in the history of Williams has taught that many years here. Dave Grant suggests we put up a statue of Patti in the foyer! It will be hard without her, but her advice to those she is leaving behind is, "You are NOT indispensable. The world will continue and students will still learn even after teachers and administrators move on." Thanks, Patti, for all you have done and what you have meant to the Williams HS family of student, parents, and faculty over the years! Best of luck in the next chapter of your life!

Shout Out from Andrews Elementary Kathie Townson & Eboni Jones On May 31, 2016 the parents and students from Mrs. Donna Surrette’s class at Andrews Elementary School celebrated her retirement. It was a real party! They had food, music, cake, and gifts. Each child provided Mrs. Surrette with a gift as a token of love and thanks for all of her hard work. The students also worked on a craft project which involved all of their handprints. Parents celebrated Mrs. Surrette and offered words of thanks and encouragement as she journeys off into retirement. Mrs. Surrette was very happy and expressed gratitude for being able to work with wonderful students.
