Coach Al Rabe has had a long career in baseball; 31 years as varsity baseball coach (6 years at Castle, 3 years at Boonville, 19 years at Jeffersonville and 3 years at Scottsburg). His teams have won 12 sectionals, 5 regionals, 2 semi-state championships and over 500 games. Mr. Rabe also served as the IHSBCA President in 2009-2010. He is also a 2015 inductee to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Coach Carla Zellers is a 1990 graduate of Scottsburg High School and a 1994 graduate of Ball State University. Majored in Chemistry and is currently a QC Manager with Kremers Urban Pharmaceuticals Inc. She was a full scholarship player for the Women’s Basketball team at Ball State University. Restricted Earnings Coach for the Women’s Basketball team at Rice University in Houston, TX  1990-1992. Currently in her 4th season as SHS Varsity coach, she started coaching youth softball in 2008 and moved to coaching travel softball in 2010 until taking the varsity job at SHS in Spring 2011. Carla resides in Scottsburg with her husband, Scott and 3 children: Lisa (20), Zoe (12) and Wyatt (10).

Coach Leslie Carter is a 1994 graduate of Scottsburg High School and was on the track and basketball team during her attendance. She was a two time state qualifier in track for the 400 Relay and Long Jump. Coach Carter attended Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN on scholarships for track and field. She has coached track and field for ten years and coached the Scottsburg Girls Track Team for five years. She is a Respiratory Therapist at Shneck Medical Center and lives in Underwood with her husband Jason and two children, Ryan and Hannah.

Coach Zach Pedigo received his bachelor’s degree from Franklin College in 2008 and his master’s degree from Indiana University Bloomington in 2012. He is currently working on an Administrative License at Indiana University Southeast. He has coached boys varsity track for two years and for the past four years has been one of the 7th grade Social Studies teachers at Scottsburg Middle School. Coach Pedigo and his wife, Melissa lives in Sellersburg and they are the proud parents of a baby boy, Jackson Arthur Pedigo. !

Coach John Gullion is a graduate from Madison Consolidated High School. He graduated college from East Texas State University. Coach Gullion and his wife were both teachers at SHS. He also held the assistant principal job for 21 years and was principal for 3 years. He has held several coaching positions in basketball and golf. Coach Gullion married his high school sweetheart, Beverly, and they have four children, Christy, Cara, Johnny and Jonathan, all attended SHS.

After winning three state championships in as many years, the Scottsburg High School Academic Team is once again striving for success. The team consists of separate squads for math, science, English, fine arts, social studies, and an interdisciplinary (or overall) category. Each team has its own coach that works with the individual squads as they master the material needed for the year. The topic for this year’s competition is “The Grandeur that was Rome” and team members are provided with an outline of the material to study. After studying the material, the team will compete against other schools from around the state by answering questions to determine which squads have the best knowledge of the topic. The Scottsburg High School Academic Team is a great opportunity for students to show off their knowledge and study skills in their favorite area of study and also provides a deeper background and practice with the material.

The archery club is part of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).  NASP sponsors a State, National, and World Tournament where team as well as individual shooters can win college scholarship money, trophies and prizes.  The archery team also competes in local matches where trophies and other prizes are awarded.  The archery season runs from October through May which gives students the opportunity to join the team for either the State match in the Fall or the National match in the Spring, although most students shoot in both matches.  All equipment is provided and all students are welcome to join archery.

Debra Hendricks has been coaching SHS archery since its inception five years ago.  The archery club is affiliated by the National Archery in the School Program.  The history of the archery program is as follows: We started shooting on the stage in McClain Hall averaging only 9 archers.  The next year, we started practicing in the Lake Iola shelter house, added 2 more coaches, and averaged around 17 archers. For the next couple of years, we practiced in the northwest corner of McClain Hall and started buying more equipment and the club expanded to a 20 student roster.  This year we moved to our new home in the old middle school.  Our new location will allow the program to grow and expand.  We can now shoot 22 archers at a time and we have 18 school bows that students can use.  Come out and be a part of the fastest growing club in Indiana, archery.

Texting  While  Driving  isn’t  just  Distracting  –  It’s  DEADLY

◊ Establish  a  rule  that  the  cell  phone  will  be  “off”  whenever  your  teen  is  behind  the  wheel:

o It is ILLEGAL for a person under 18 to operate a vehicle while using

a cell phone IN ANY WAY, including placing or receiving calls.

o It is illegal for ANYONE to text while driving, punishable by fine up to $500.00.

o Distracted driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving.

o Driving while “inTEXTicated” can be DEADLY not only to your teen, but others on the roadway.

o Causing a fatal traffic accident while texting can be considered

RECKLESS HOMICIDE and is punishable by up to 8 years in prison.

o Model responsible behavior by not using your own phone to text or browse while you are driving. Don’t  call  or  text  your  teen  at  times  you know they are driving.

◊ Establish  that  a  cell  phone  is  a  privilege,  not  a  right,  and  that  a  cell  phone  can  be  taken  away  if  misused.
